The eggs hatch into tiny tadpoles, which live in the water.
The female lays up to several thousand eggs, and then the male fertilises them. Some frogs make a foam nest to protect the eggs.
Life cycleFrogs live for between one and 23 years.
When a male frog is ready to breed he calls to attract a female.
The tadpoles grow legs and arms, and their tail shortens and disappears. As they become adults they develop lungs and their gills disappear.
The adult frogs live on land and use their lungs to breathe. Many frogs are ready to breed when they are one to two years old.
