About Us
Geochemic Ltd was established in September 2015 to offer comprehensive and cost
effective environmental geochemical consulting and laboratory services to the mining
industry.
We deliver this service through highly selective and efficient data collection and through
the utilisation of all existing data gathered by our clients. In this way we ensure that
sampling and analysis costs are kept to an absolute minimum whilst ensuring all
foreseeable risks are analysed and resolved through the generation of comprehensive
conceptual and predictive numerical models.
We have laboratory facilities for undertaking kinetic tests on mining wastes. These tests
include humidity cell tests (ASTM D 5744) which are commonly referred to as the industry
standard for assessment of the weathering of mining waste. By carrying out the kinetic
tests ourselves, we can be confident of the accuracy and precision of the results.
In the modern mining industry it is critical that nothing is left to chance. That is why we pride ourselves on being able to identify potential risks and solutions that others may have missed.
Dr. Andrew Barnes
Eur.Geol, CGeol, Ph.D, MSc
Geochemic Ltd Managing director
Andrew is an environmental geochemist specialising in
mining waste characterisation and prediction of acid mine
drainage. He has seven years of post doctoral experience in
mining consultancy, is chartered with the Geological Society
of London and is a registered European Geologist. His areas
of expertise include:
Design of mine waste characterisation programs
Field and laboratory based leaching tests
Thermodynamic equilibrium modelling using the USGS software PHREEQC
Large scale conceptual modelling
Geoscientific data integration and analysis
Andrew has a PhD in mine water hydrogeochemistry which he attained from Cardiff
University, School of Engineering in the UK; an MSc in Environmental Geology and an
undergraduate degree in Geology.

Our Laboratory Services
At Geochemic we have a well equipped laboratory facility designed specifically for
geochemical testing of mining waste materials. We can accommodate many types of
kinetic column leaching, oxygen consumption and attenuation tests including standard
ASTM D 5744 humidity cell tests. Our facility includes:
Stable laboratory temperature maintained at 20oC (± 2oC),
Elga-Option R-7 purified water system supplied by a Veolia. This system produces
ASTM Type II+ water (greater than 15 M ohm resistivity) exceeding the quality
requirements of the ASTM D 5744 standard methodology
Laboratory analytical facilities for the immediate analysis of parameters such as
pH, alkalinity and sulfate
On site preservation of samples and analysis externally for major and trace
elements at an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory
We offer testing as both a standalone package or in conjunction with our consulting services.
How to contact us
Geochemic is located at the edge of the historic South Wales coalfield in the town of
Abergavenny, United Kingdom.
Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss our fees, or to obtain a quote for
our consulting and testing services. Andrew can be contacted directly via email
([email protected]) or telephone +44(0)7792 726711. For further information,
