GEO means Earth.

THERMAL means Energy.

Geothermal Energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth.

Page 3: Geo thermal energy 1

Geothermal Powerplants get energy from hot Lava inside the Earth. The

heat is used to boil water and get vapors.

The first geothermal energy plant was invented in 1904 by Prince Piero Ginori Conti of Italy.

The first modern geothermal power plants were also built in Lardello, Italy.

The first geothermal power plants in the U.S. were built in 1962 at The Geysers dry steam

field, in northern California.

Used for bathing in Paleolithic times.

Ancient Romans used it as a central heating system

for bathing and heating homes and floors.

1892: America`s first district heating system was

put into place.

Page 9: Geo thermal energy 1

It is renewable.

It doesn’t cause pollution.

There is no fire hazard.

Power stations does not requier much space.

No fuel is used.

Once the geothermal power station was built the is almost

free.

It may need a little energy to run a pump, but this can be

taken from the energy being generated.

Suitable place is required.

Some times the rocks run out of steam.

Hazardous gases and minerals may come up from

underground, and can be difficult to safely dispose of.

Success Story – Geothermal Power Generation in Kenya.

Page 13: Geo thermal energy 1

The International Geothermal Association (IGA) has reported that 10,715 megawatts(MW) of geothermal power in 24

countries is online, which is expected to generate 67,246 GWh of electricity in 2010. This represents a 20% increase in online

capacity since 2005. IGA projects growth to 18,500 MW by 2015, due to the projects presently under consideration, often in

areas previously assumed to have little exploitable resource.

Overall, geothermal appears to be a sound solution to energy needs.

Geothermal energy has the ability to expand.

Few environmental effects.

Very cost efficient.

Geothermal is RENEWABLE.
