IOC Architecture – Engineering Viewpoint

Page 7: GEO Architecture and Data Committee Task AR-07-02 Architecture Implementation Pilot

GEOSS Initial Operating Capability - “IOC”

• IOC established in 2007• 64 Components & 75 Services registered (21 Nov 07)

– Process and components for registration; SIF• User interfaces to services

– GEO Web Portals (3), Community Portals (27) and Application Clients (13)

• Several organizations capable of providing – GEO Web Portal solutions– GEOSS Clearinghouse solutions

Page 8: GEO Architecture and Data Committee Task AR-07-02 Architecture Implementation Pilot

GEO Web Portal - 2007

• Demonstrated that organizations are capable of providing workable GEO Web Portal solutions

– Compusult: http://www.geowebportal.org – ESA-FAO: http://www.geoportal.org– ESRI: http://keel.esri.com/Portal

• Though visibly similar & meeting basic requirements, the three offer different feature sets.

• Outreach and Evaluation process recommended

AI Pilot Development and Milestones - 2007

• Effective development process: – Call for Participation (CFP) April-May 2007– Kickoff workshop at ESA June 2007– Integration and deployment September 2007– Demonstration for Plenary & Summit November 2007

• Participation via distributed international– 105 Organizations responded to CFP

• Now: ~120 organizations registered for communication– IOC established:

• Core Architecture, User Interfaces, Services– Core Architecture Implementation Report November 2007

Page 10: GEO Architecture and Data Committee Task AR-07-02 Architecture Implementation Pilot

AR-07-02 Further Development

• Increase collaboration with GEO Committees

• Increase commitment to Operations and Persistence

• Refine architecture

– Add Sensor Web services and component types

– Refine and enhance Workflow for observation processing and decision support

• Two items added to task

– Persistent Infrastructure for Service Integration

– GEOSS User and Architecture Workshops

Process improvement ideas

Comments on AIP Process Process Improvement

Functionality defined by developers not users

UIC/ADC collaboration, Workshops: Identify operational SBA functionality

AIP Process is closed Development process is iterative; Emphasize anyone can join at anytime

Process focused on demonstrations

Emphasize operational persistence; Deliver to AR-07-01 Operations

Process is structured with milestones and deliverables

Retain structure within a phase; Emphasize iterative & open approach

Hosted by the European Commission

At the Joint Research Centre

February 2008

Page 17: GEO Architecture and Data Committee Task AR-07-02 Architecture Implementation Pilot

GEO Architecture Workshop

• February 4&5, 2008

– Co-located at JRC Ispra with ADC-6

• Purpose: Consensus building in support of CFP

• Topics

– SBA context areas defined with UIC as scenarios

– Begin refinement of the CFP-2007 architecture

– Sustained operations for information components

– Core Architecture Implementation Report topics

• ~50 persons attended; plenary and parallel sessions

Page 18: GEO Architecture and Data Committee Task AR-07-02 Architecture Implementation Pilot

UIC - ADC Coordination• Scenarios for SBA context identified through

UIC/ADC coordination– Thanks to Els LeDrew (and Gary Foley) for supporting

and attending

• UIC Goal – engage users in development and implementation of a

sustained GEOSS that provides information required for societal benefit areas as specified by user groups on national, regional and global scales

• Next meeting of UIC: Toronto, May 6-8, 2008– “Kick the Tires” workshop on Air Quality on May 5
