GETTING STARTEDSEAT BELTS

SEAT BELTS :

Occupants safety is of utmostimportance.

Your car is equipped with seat belts, both front and rear as a part ofoccupant restraint system.

Why Seat Belts

Wearing seat belts properly canprotect you from being thrownagainst the inside of the car oragainst other occupants in case ofan accident or sudden braking. Itwill reduce the chances of severeinjury.

How to use seat belts

This car has three point type frontseat belts and lap belts for rear seatout board occupants (LH & RH).Innormal driving, the belt lets youmove freely in your seat. In case ofan accident or sudden braking, inertia reel automatically tightens thebelt to help restrain your body.

The anchor end of the shoulder beltis adjustable to suit the height of thepassenger wearing it. The lap belthas one manually adjusted belt thatfits across the hip bone.

Make sure that your seat is adjustedto a good driving position and theback of the seat is upright.

1. Pull the tongue across your bodyand insert it into the buckle.

2. Check and ensure that the beltis not twisted.

1. Seat Belt 3. Lock Buckle2. Tongue

23

1

WARNINGTwisted seat belts can causeinjury in a collision as the full widthof the belt isn’t available to absorbthe impact. This puts more forceon the bones beneath the belt, which could break them or causeother serious injury. Don’t weartwisted seat belts.

3. Position the lap portion of the beltas low as possible across yourhip bone.

4. Pull up the shoulder part of thebelt to remove the slack. Makesure that the belt goes over yourcollar bones and across chest.

5. To unlatch the belt, press the redbutton on the buckle. Guide thebelt to the pillar as it retracts.

WARNING

Improper positioning of theshoulder portion of the seat beltis dangerous. An improperlypositioned belt will provide littleor no protection in a collision.

Page 64: GenX Nano Owner's Manual

62

SEAT BELTSGETTING STARTED

Always make sure the shoulderportion of the seat belt ispositioned across your shoulderand near your neck, but neverunder your arm. on your neck, oron your upper arm.

6. The belts are meant (intended)for adult occupants only.

7. Each belt should be used by oneoccupant only. The belt must notbe put round a child, seated onpassengers lap.

8. When the belt has been in usein a serious accident or showssigns of severe fraying / damageor of having been cut, replace withan approved belt kit.

9. The belt must not be altered ormodified during use.

WARNING

Using one seat belt for morethan one person at a time isdangerous. A seat belt used Inthis way cannot spread theimpact forces properly and thetwo passengers could becrushed together and seriouslyinjured. Never use one belt formore than one person at a time.

10. The belts if required should bereplaced, by Authorisedpersonnel only.

11. The belt should not bedisassembled. If required, authorised personnel onlyshould carry out disassemblyand assembly.

12. Clean the webbing with a mild soapsolution recommended forupholstery. Bleaching or dyeingthe webbing may weaken it.

Lap belt:

Pull the tongue to the desired length.Insert it into the buckle until you heara click.

Adjust the belt length. To lengthenthe belt, hold the tongue at a rightangle to the webbing and pull. Toshorten, pull the loose end of thewebbing.

To unfasten, depress the button inthe buckle.

WARNINGPositioning the lap portion of theSeat Belt too high can bedangerous as in a collision, thiswould concentrate the impactforce directly on the abdominalarea, causing serious injury.Wear the lap portion of the beltsnugly and as low as possible.

DRIVINGDRIVING SAFETY & FUEL ECONOMY

DRIVING SAFETY

Seat Belt

Seat-belts are life saving equipment, use of seat-belt reduces the chanceof injury and severity of injury in caseof an accident. It is stronglyrecommended that all the caroccupants should always wearseat-belt, while vehicle is in motion.

Influence of Alcohol

Do not drive under the influences ofalcohol or drugs. Alcohol and drugswill severely impair your control ofthe vehicle and increase the risk ofinjury yourself and others.

Mobile phones

Do not use mobile phones whiledriving a vehicle. This could divertyour attention from the road andresult in an accident.

Fatigue 'Rest Revive survive'

Do not attempt driving when you feeltired, sleepy. Long distance driving cantire you very much and fatigue can dullyour reflexes and judgment. Take a restand get refreshed at intervals.

FRIENDLY TIPS TO IMPROVE FUELECONOMY :

Your vehicle's fuel economy is mainlydependent on your style of driving. To operate your vehicle aseconomically as possible, adhereto following driving suggestions.

Avoid Excessive Idling :

Shut Off the engine if you have towait for more than a minute whileyou are in traffic.

Avoid fast starts and unnecessarystops :

Start off slowly from traffic lights orstop signs to prevent increased fuelconsumption and shortening ofengine life. Avoid unnecessarydeceleration (stopping or slowingdown) and then acceleration whichuses more fuel.

Always maintain clean air-filter:

The amount of air supplied willreduce due to clogged air-filter,resulting in loss of power and fueleconomy.

Keep weight to a minimum:

The heavier the load, the more fuelthe vehicle consumes. Take out anyluggage or cargo when it is notnecessary.

Maintain correct tyre pressures:

Under-inflated tyres result inincreased running resistance of thetyres, leading to wastage of fuel.

(Refer tyre maintenance section)

Page 72: GenX Nano Owner's Manual

70

FUEL ECONOMYDRIVING

Proper Driving Practices :

Keep a safe distance from othervehicles to avoid braking suddenly.

NOTE

Do not rest your foot on the clutchpedal. It does not allow fullengine power to be transmittedto the vehicle and reduces clutchlife.

Fuel economy speeds (MT) :

Always adhere to following fueleconomy speeds.

Gear Speed (kmph)

1st 10

2nd 20 - 30

3rd 30 - 50

4th 50 - 70

FUEL CUT-IN / CUT-OFF STRATEGY:

The ECU has been programmed tolimit the speed of the vehicle to 35km/h in 1st gear, 60 km/h in 2nd gear,90 km/h in 3rd gear and 105 km/hin 4th gear. As a good drivingpractice, always shift to a higher gearbefore reaching the speed limitspecified for that gear. In case thegear is not shifted and you continueto drive in the same gear beyond thespecified speed, the ECU willactivate the fuel cut-off strategy andrestrict vehicle speed to thespecified limit. This is to ensureoptimum fuel efficiency andprolonged engine life.

DRIVINGBRAKING,STOPPING & PARKING (MT)

Braking :

The distance required to bring a carto a halt increase with the speed ofthe vehicle. The braking distanceneeded for vehicle at 60 kmph willbe approximately 4 times greaterthan the braking distance neededat 30 kmph. Anticipate your stop, slowdown gradually and applybrake.

If water gets into the brake drums, brake performance may becomepoor and unpredictable. After drivingthrough water or washing theunderside of the vehicle, test thebrake while driving at slow speed tosee if they have maintained therenormal effectiveness. If the brakesare less effective than normal, drythem by repeatedly applying thebrake while driving slowly until thebrakes have regained their normaleffectiveness.

The booster type braking system isprovided in this vehicle. However, theamount of braking effort required bythe driver to activate the brakeswould be lesser in the brake-booster models.

Maintain a speed such that you canstop within illuminated distance ofhead lamps.

Climbing Sharp Gradients onLoose Surfaces :

Start off smoothly in a suitable gear.Accelerate smoothly so that thereis no loss of traction by over-revvingof the engine.

Choose as smooth a slope aspossible and select the appropriategear so that gear changing in themiddle of the climb is not required.

Changing gears in the middle of theclimb can cause loss ofmomentum and engine stalling.Shifting to lower gear has to bedone cautiously to avoid loss oftraction.

Under no conditions should thevehicle be moved diagonally acrossa hill. The danger is in loss oftraction and sideways slippage, possibly resulting in toppling over.If unavoidable, choose as mild anangle as possible and keep thevehicle moving.

If the wheels start to slip within fewfeet of the end of the climb, motion

can be maintained by swinging thesteered wheels left and right, thereby providing increased grip.

If the vehicle stalls or lossesheadway while climbing a steep hill, make a quick shift to reverse andallow the vehicle to move back withthe control of engine compression.

Climbing Sharp Gradients usingAMT :

Apply the parking brake firmly sothat the vehicle does not rollbackwards.

Shift the gearshift lever to the “A”position while depressing thebrake pedal. Make sure that the gearposition indicator in the instrumentcluster displays ‘1st’ gear.

Release the brake pedal anddepress the accelerator pedalgradually, and when the vehiclestarts to move, release the parkingbrake and depress the acceleratorpedal to start off.

On climbing sharp gradients, neverhold the vehicle at a stop using onlythe accelerator pedal or thecreeping function. If you perform thisoperation for a certain period oftime, this can also cause excessivedamage to the clutch.

Descending Sharp Gradients :

Depending on the severity of thegradient, shift into appropriate gear.Use engine braking judiciouslywithout over-revving the engine.

Brake application under suchsituations should be done very

smoothly to avoid loss of control.Select appropriate gear so that gearchanging or clutch disengagementis not involved while descending thegradient.

NOTE

Creeping function will not operatewhen vehicle is in standstil lcondition on inclined surface.

WARNING

Try not to hold the brake pedaldown too long or too often whilegoing down a steep or long hill. This could cause the brakes tooverheat, resulting in reducedbraking efficiency. Failure to takethis precaution could result in lossof vehicle control.

CAUTION

When descending on sharpgradients, NEVER turn the ignitionkey to the ‘OFF’ position.Emission control system damagemay result.

Descending Sharp Gradients usingAMT :

Depress the brake pedal and shiftthe gear shift lever to the ‘A’position. Make sure that the gearposition indicator in the instrumen-tal cluster displays ‘1st’ gear.

Release the brake pedal anddepress the accelerator pedalslowly. Even if the accelerator pedalis not depressed, the clutch will beengaged when the vehicle speedincreases.

ENGINE OIL LEVEL

ENGINE OIL TOP-UP

Remove the oil filler cap and pouroil slowly through the filler hole tobring the oil level to the upper limiton the dipstick. Be careful not tooverfill. Too much oil is almost asbad as too little oil. After refilling, startthe engine and allow it to idle forabout a minute. Stop the engine; letthe oil settle and check oil levelagain.

Engine oil level should be checkedwhen engine is cold. Allow at least30 mins. for engine oil to settle beforechecking oil level.

1. For checking engine oil level, pull out the dipstick from theengine oil case, wipe it clean witha cloth or a paper napkin.

2. Insert it again to its originalposition.

3. Pull out the dipstick again andobserve the oil level on thedipstick.

4. If the oil level is below the midpoint of min. and max. marks, topup using recommended grade ofoil.

NOTE

Oil level should not exceed themax. Mark. Always check the oillevel when the car is on a levelground and the engine in coldcondition.Check the engine oil level if “low oilpressure” warning comes 'ON' whiledriving. Failure to check the oil level

MAINTENANCEENGINE COOLANT LEVEL

The coolant level in the coolant no-loss tank should be between max.& min. marks. This can be viewedthrough a translucent reservoir. Ifless, add coolant up to the max. markand refit the cap properly.

NOTE

Check coolant level in the radiator,by opening the pressure cap(ensure vehicle is in coldcondition). If coolant level is seenbelow filler neck top, then addspecified pre-mixed coolant(60:40).

Check coolant level in ‘No-Loss(Reservoir) tank, if lower than the

ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL MAX leve, then add specificpremixed coolant (60:40) uptorefill level.

NOTE

• Do not use only coolant or plainwater.

• Do not add extra inhibitors oradditives. They may not be com-patible with your cooling sys-tem.

• Do not mix different types ofbase coolants. Doing so mayresult in accelerated seal wearand/or the possibility of severeoverheating and extensiveengine damage.

NOTE

Check radiator fins for dirt/dustaccumulation. Get it cleaned fromnearest TATA MOTORSAuthorised Workshop if required.

NOTEIf ‘No loss’ tank is foundcompletely empty, top up coolantthrough radiator as well asauxilary tank cap.

CAUTION

Never remove the filler cap whenthe engine is hot. Use onlybranded premixed ready to usecoolant. In case of emergencyuse normal water only. When aproper coolant mixture isavailable, the entire systemshould be flushed & filled with thesame at the earliest.

AIR FILTER & SPARK PLUGMAINTENANCE

AIR FILTER :

The air filter element should beperiodically cleaned.

Always use a genuine air filterelement.

The air filter is located on the LH sideof the engine compartment.

a) When a vehicle is driven underdusty conditions, frequentcleaning and replacement of theair-cleaner element isnecessary.

b) Blow air from inside to outsidewhile cleaning the air cleanerelement. Clogged air-cleanerslead to greater intake resistanceand result in increased fuelconsumption. Using lowpressure compressed air, blowoff dust on the air cleanerelement. If the air cleanerelement appears to be choked, replace it with a new one.

SPARK PLUG :Make : Champion RC10YCElectrode Gap : 0.8 to 0.9 mm

0.8-0.9 mm

CAUTION

Tighten the spark plug carefully.Overtightening can damage thethreads in the cylinder head. It canaffect combustion and causedamage to engine and catalyticconverter.

MAINTENANCETYRES

Tyres

Check for inflation and condition ofyour car tyres periodically.

Inflation :

Check the pressure in the tyreswhen they are cold.

You should have your own tyrepressure gauge and use it at alltimes. This makes it easier for youto tell if pressure loss is caused bya tyre problem and not by variationbetween gauges.

Keeping the tyres properly inflatedgives you the best combination ofcomfort, handling, tyre life and betterfuel efficiency.

Over inflation of tyres makes the carride bumpy and harsh. Tyres aremore prone to uneven wear anddamage from road hazards.

Under inflated tyres reduce yourcomfort in car handling and are

1 2 31. Underinflation : Excessive Side

Tread Wear

2. Correct Tyre Pressure :Uniform Tyre Wear

3. Overinflation : ExcessiveCentre Tread Wear

prone to failures due to hightemperature. They also causeuneven wear and more fuelconsumption.

CAUTION

Every time you check inflationpressure, you should alsoexamine tyres for damage, foreignobjects and wear.

Recommended Tyre Pressures

Tyres size :

Front 135/70R12

Rear 155/65R12

Spare 135/70R12

Tyre pressure :

Front 26 - 28 psi (1.7-1.9 bar)

Rear 28 - 30 psi (1.9-2.1 bar)

Spare 28 - 30 psi (1.9-2.1 bar)

CAUTIONReplace the tyre if you find eitherof these conditions.• Bumps or bulges in the tread

or the side of the tyre.• Cuts, splits or cracks in the

side of the tyre. Replace the tyreif you notice this on the fabricor cord.

• Excessive tread wear or nonuniform tyre wear.

• The wear indicators appearbetween the tread grooveswhen tread depth is 1.6mm orless.

• Always dispose of worn tiresaccording to local environmentregulation.

REPAIRING TYRESMAINTENANCE

Repairing a Tyre :

Mark the tyre position (if originalcolour dot mark is not visible) withrespect to valve stem hole to ensurethat the tyre is refitted in the originallocation on the wheel rim.

Ensure that balancing weights arenot disturbed during removal of tyres.

Check the balance weight prior to theremoval of the tyre. If found loose, mark its location on the rim & refitproperly.

Balance the wheel after everydismantling and assembly of tyre onthe wheel rim if required.

While fitting wheels on the vehicleensure that wheel pins are free fromdust, scratches, dirt, dents, etc.

NOTE

Do not apply any oil on the wheelpins. Wipe off the oil if present.

Special care for tubeless tyres

1. While removing tyre from wheelrim and mounting it back onwheel rim, take precautions notto damage tyre bead. Use tyreremoval and assemblymachines. Damage or cut on tyrebead may cause gradual loss ofair and deflation of tyre.

2. Do not scratch inside of tubelesstyre with metallic or sharp object.Tubeless tyres are coated withimpermeable layer of rubberfrom inside which holds the air

inside the tyre. Removal of thislayer due to scratching maycause gradual loss of air anddeflation.

3. If wheel rim gets damaged inservice, get the wheel rimrepaired/replaced immediately.Running the vehicle withdamaged rim may causedeflation of tyre and subsequentdislodging of tyre from rim.

4. Maintain recommended inflationpressure. Over-inflation, inparticular, may cause punctureor bursting of tyre.

NOTE

Life and wear pattern of tyresdepends on various parameterslike tyre pressure, wheelalignment, wheel balancing, tyrerotation, etc. It also largelydepends on vehicle speed, loadcarried, usage, driving habits, road conditions, tyre quality, etc.In case fault is suspected to bedue to poor quality of tyres, thesame may be taken up withconcerned tyre manufacturer.
