day IS started I feel very wong," he Si&

y father was very devout and I was fcAtLla~ enough to follow some of his wos. I d1dn't know why as a k1d, but h•"t~eemed very happy. He didn't seem tq3lave a care. I did what my father did IUIIt that got me where I am today."

S)uring football season, the learn a~mpantes Quinn to Mass on game day and he takes time out before and a.fter each football game and wrestling rvet for prayer and renectiVe thought.

"It's a very opportune time to get things across to kids," he said, "..,ecially when you win. They're very aU.ntive ~r a win.

"'Some things you say to k1ds now gQIII m one ear and out the other, but Wilen thev're 20 or 30 yean old they qht remember somethmg Coach Qmnn said and it will help them."

:Nick LaPielra, a Section 5 "Testhng ~pion who also has played four • of football under Qumn, said, "He

.,..,.,.,.... a lot about God He says that we oiJijiUld folio..,. Him. He (Quinn) means a lot to us." ~uinn tells seniors like LaPietra, "lf

thlere's one thing you learn, it's that you alii here for the good Lord."

He alc;o teaches his athlett'l\ how to ~ve in day-to-day l1ft>.

"I compare athletiCS to life," he said. "Both have therr ups and do..,.n .

"Nobody feels like losmg, but if you lose you've got to get back up."

Rick Sidor, a Section 5 wrestling champion in 1979 who earned a full scholarship to SyTacuse for football, 'laid, "He was the perfect roach. He'd <{o anythmg m the world for you, and you didn't want to let h1m down

"The b1gge~t thing he Ulught wao; lf-diSCiplme," added Sidor, now an

~lstant coach under Qumn. "I was Lrying to get a biology degree and I'd get done w1th (football) practice at 8 o'dock at n1ght and I'd have all this 1\Qmework to do. If I didn't have the self-dasc1plme to s1t down and do that lt,ork, I'd be fin1shed

"You m1ght curse his name during ~actice, but he's the kind of coach you really appreciate after you get away 6iNn h1gh school.~

It was that way with Qumn's high iPlool football coach, as well

"He was a gentleman who demanded aD awfuJ lot and got what he demanded," Qujnn said of Rodiek. "In !Ugh school you respected him out of fear, but he really wao; a sympathetic man you could lean on. I think ht> did a Jot for my life ~

Rod1ek and football helped keep Quinn m school. ~ I wouldn't have stayed m school

tfthout athletics," he said. "I didn't love iebool, but I loved sports. That'll what 4JI)tivaU!d me to not only linL'!h high tc:hool, but to go on to college and then to get a master's degree ~

Qumn lettered Ill three ~port~ in high "hool (fnotball, bowling and bru.eball), before gomg on to pia) football and wresthng at Cortland State He has &ince earned a masU!r's degree at Brockport StaU!.

"This day and age sporLo; are even mare amportant," he sa1d. "because <there IS not a lot requared of kids. This ....

.one place where demand!\ are made. 4'he American way 1s lu do the least ·=t you can. That ha~ rubbed off on

Don Quinn believes m this coaching philosophy: 'I compare athletics to life. Nobody feels like lostng, but if you lose you've got to get back up.'

the k1ds. They just aren't as dedicated anyTnore. They want something for nothing."

ER, however, is known for having hard-workers and positive resuJts in football and wrestling.

• The 1978 football U!am was top-ranked in the East by the Phrladelphia JourMI.

• Three state wrestling champions -Tim Gay (1970), Rich McPhee ('74) and ,John ZiLo ('78) - have been produced by a school with a current student enrollment of only 381.

• The wrestling U!am is defending champ1cm of Secuon 5 Class C' and the D('mocrat and C'hronrclf' coaches poll. The Bombers have been ranked No. 1 among 82 teams in ection 5 throughout this seac;cm, and they also are ranked fifth in the staU! sports writers poU.

Thcl!\e accomplishments are due, in large part, w Quann.

MHe keep~. us m hnc," said LaPietra. MHe keeps us in shape and makes us work E'Ven harder."

Qumn said, Ml contribuU! to the kids' willin~tne!ls to work above and beyond the call of duty. I'm willing to put my heart and souJ into it. The kids see that and they respond.~

A husband for 27 years and the father of SIX children, Quinn's work day as athletic director and coach averages between 12 and 16 hours. Still, he finds

the time to run two to three miles live t1mes a week, as well as lift weights three times a week ... If you demand something, you've got to set the example,~ he said.

Quinn feels his responsibility to lead by example continues outside of school, as well.

"When you're in the limeJjght you have a certain way you have to Jive," he said. "You owe it to society.

"I won't go into a bar in this community because a lot of people respect me. I don't want to lead them astray."

He feels little pressure standing in the village of East RochesU!r's limelight because his measure of succe<iS is not in victories and defeat..s, but by .. how happy you are."

"I can't say there's a happier man in the world then me," he said. "I've got a wonderful wife (Susan), six wonderful children (Don, 27; Diane, 25; Linda, 24; Tim, 17; Mike, 15, and Patrick, 12), and a very comfortable life

"I enJOY what I'm doing and I enjoy the people I'm around."

He'll remain a coach until "at's no longer fun."

"I feel I'U always have something to offer kids," the long-time member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes added.

"I'd Hke to be remembered, not as a winning coach, but as one who has tried to give his life and little talents to help young people have faith.~
