Surface StainingDiscolouration develops on the outside of the teeth from plaque, tartar, tobacco, drinks, medicines and some mouthwashes. Your dentist or hygienist can remove this and give advice to reduce further build-up.

Internal StainingTeeth are generally quite thick and are made up of two layers; internal yellow dentine and external, whiter, covering enamel. Absorption of various colourants from our foodstuffs like tea, coffee, red wine etc. can make the teeth become yellow. As teeth wear with age the internal discolouration can become more noticeable. Some patients may have discoloured teeth from tetracycline antibiotics given when they were children.

Methods of Tooth WhiteningTray Whitening

A gentle procedure that you can conduct at home following our instructions. We will custom-make your dental tray to accurately fit your teeth and protect your gums and provide

full instructions and the appropriate materials and monitoring sheets.

An improvement of about five shades can usually be expected with this method and we can also supply on-going materials for you to continue periodic treatment as and when you require it .

In Surgery Whitening

Here at Waterside Dental Care, we have been registered for over ten years to provide in-surgery tooth whitening. We use the latest materials including Philips ZoomTM which can whiten your teeth by eight or more shades in just one visit.

We advise and help you maintain the whiteness by providing materials for you to continue to obtain the desired appearance in your own home.

Other Whitening

A single discoloured tooth or a dark root-filled tooth can be whitened by techniques targeting the whitening. However some root filling materials are unsuitable and may need replacing before the treatment can commence.

Whitening toothpastes contain a very small proportion of the active ingredient and are unlikely to effect a colour change but can help maintain the new colour after professional whitening. For a temporary effect whitening pens and strips may be used, although the effect may be disappointing and does not last.

General Notes on Tooth Whitening

• It is impossible to predict the final colour of your teeth after whitening as teeth will absorb the whitening gel to different extents.

• It is advisable to avoid eating and drinking during home treatment and for half an hour afterwards. Avoid smoking, coffee, curry and red wine for 12 hours.

• Occasionally teeth may become sensitive; however this will settle down after the treatment stops. It may last about 24 hours and using toothpastes for sensitive teeth may help.

•With home whitening upper and lower teeth do not need to be done together.

• If teeth are sensitive avoid whitening them on consecutive days, leave time between applications for them to settle before continuing. Relief gel is available in the practice.

•Whitening will not change the colour of any fillings or crowns and these may need to be replaced if they appear more noticeable afterwards.

• If any gel gets onto the surface of the gum you might get a white spot which will disappear in a short time.

• The techniques restore the colour of your teeth; they cannot give you an unnaturally white colour.

•Maintenance will be necessary to prevent further discolouration over time.

• Regular use of whitening toothpastes may help to maintain the new colour.

This enables the prescription of the best legally approved treatment to achieve the desired result for the patient.
