Van Eyck Jan Van Eyck, pittore fiammingo della prima metà del Quattrocento, viaggiò in Europa per missioni diplomatiche, e mise su casa a Bruges. Caposcuola del Rinascimento fiammingo, segnò il trapasso dal-la visione medioevale dei tardogotici a un moderno naturalismo figurativo. Elaborò una tecnica di pit-tura a olio che dà trasparenza al colore, e un nuovo modo di rendere la tridimensionalità. La sua opera più nota è il grande polittico in venti scomparti L’adorazione dell’agnello mistico conservato in una cappella della chiesa di San Bavone a Gent. Alle figure di Adamo e Eva – i primi nudi monu-mentali nella pittura del nord Europa – il pennello analitico e oggettivo di Van Eyck non ha conferito alcuna venustà. Netto il rifiuto del Bello Ideale. Nell’aggressiva e severa interpretazione di fisicità, sono d’una crudezza visiva e psicologica senza precedenti. È una nuova cultura visiva che ha co-me cardine l’indagine minuziosa della realtà, rap-presentata con estremo naturalismo in ogni detta-glio, senza gerarchie precostituite. Così grande è la fedeltà di Van Eyck ai principi della sua arte, per la quale l’oggettività è un dovere morale, che egli soffoca la tentazione di abbellire o addolcire i tratti per non peccare di insincerità verso se stesso. La registrazione fedele della realtà. I suoi dipinti recano spesso il motto ALS ICH CAN: Come posso.

Gent Gent, 230.000 abitanti, capoluogo della Fiandra orientale, sorge sulle sponde dei fiumi Lys e Schel-da. Città industriale e principale centro culturale fiammingo. La sua fortuna economica si deve alla lavorazione della lana, che diventa industria nel sec.XII. A Gent, come a Bruges e Courtrai, sorsero a quel tempo monasteri di beghine istituiti dal monaco Lamberto di Liegi soprannominato il Balbuziente (Le Bègue). Erano vedove che si dedi-cavano ad opere di carità, vivendo in comune e osservando castità, povertà e obbedienza. Il movi-mento fu combattuto come eretico e scomunicato all’inizio del sec XIV. Gent fu soggetta ai conti di Fiandra, vassalli della corona francese, e nel sec XVI entrò a far parte dei domini asburgici; partecipò alla rivolta dei Paesi Bassi contro Filippo II di Spagna e fu retta da un governo calvinista. Nel 1576 a Gent si stipulò un patto di alleanza fra cattolici e protestanti dei Paesi Bassi, che s’impegnavano ad aiutarsi reciproca-mente per la liberazione del paese dagli spagnoli dopo il sacco di Anversa. Gent entrò a far parte del regno del Belgio nel 1831. La vita politica fu dominata a lungo dal pa-triziato borghese, ma la presenza di un forte prole-tariato industriale fece di Gent la roccaforte del socialismo in Belgio.

6 Stiamo bene o stiamo male? Stiamo bene quando il piccolo mondo attorno a noi ci assomiglia. Quando chi ci ascolta non guarda le mosche e non pensa alla sua prossima battuta. Quando non si fa la gara a chi è più stronzo. Quando ab-biamo bisogno di un bacio e ci viene dato. Nella testa abbiamo tanti uccelletti col becco spalanca-to. E ogni becco pretende il suo vermicello. C’è l’uccelletto della fame e della sete. Quello del for-micolio sessuale. Della conoscenza. Della smania di conquista. Della vanità. Della paura della fine. Ogni uccelletto pretende la sua parte.

7 La realtà. Che altro? Il corpo contiene l’anima, non il contrario. Abbiamo sterminati bisogni. Bisogno di tutto. Di un piatto caldo, di un corpo da abbracciare, di un Dio in cui sperare. Ma la partita si gioca tutta dentro il nostro corpo. Quando hai dolori lancinanti giorno e notte non te ne frega più niente di storia e geografia, e quando hai levato l’ultimo guaìto può anche scomparire il papa insieme col cupolone e teolo-gia bella. Ma fin che c’è vita c’è realtà. Che bello. Strisciare con il verme, saltellare col passero, sonnecchiare al sole col gatto, lambire una pelle di seta, sentire in un attimo tutto il sentire di sempre, l’arte più sublime e la bava catarrosa. Io sono tutti. La mia anima è tutte le anime. Il mio corpo contiene tutti i corpi di tutti i tempi, tutte le agonìe, tutte le felicità.

Scendono, salgono. Studenti dalle invidiabili dentature. Dai tanti capelli. Sul treno Gent-Bruxelles due coppie anziane conversano a bassa voce con una delicatezza mai vista. Un uomo si rivolge all’altro, che lo ascolta con interesse e non lo interrompe. La donna di fronte, tenendo in mano con grazia un panino, dice qualcosa e l’uomo le risponde calmo.

5 Ci pensiamo come persone democratiche civi-lizzate. I rapporti tra noi sono educati, che dia-mine, siamo usciti da un pezzo dalle caverne! Scusa, posso farti una domanda? Certamente. Non ci posso credere! Riconosco di aver sba-gliato, ma dammi un’altra possibilità. Tutto bene? Le moine della nostra modernità rivelano un unico modello al quale conformarsi. Siamo liberi. Ma facciamo tutti le stesse cose. Acqui-stiamo gli stessi balocchi. Diciamo le stesse generiche parole. E siamo davvero tolleranti,

Partire: separare, separarsi.

Partire 1 Questo libro è un omaggio al Caso. Un atto di non volontà. Nel 2006 parto e riparto per Gent, sei volte. La destinazione Gent è frutto del caso. Non ha alcuno scopo, se non l’esplorazione ran-dagia. Il piacere dell’abbandono dei propri sensi a un itinerario gratuito. Doppiamente gratuito. Non esageriamo: a basso costo. È bello spendere poco. La camera digitale scatta senza ritegno centinaia di foto. Gratis. Niente rullini da svilup-pare e stampare. Fotografie casuali, di chi per caso volta pagina e s’immerge in un’altra storia. Ma non è un’altra storia. La vita è una sola. Non c’è un’altra storia né un altro mondo. È tutto qui. Le differenze sono trascurabili. Diventano forti quando la paura e l’odio le rendono forti. Vorrei sotterrare tutte le armi e con loro i capi di qualunque cosa, i malati di potere.

2 Esco di casa con una borsa leggera e vado a pie-

di a Bruxelles. Cioè, raggiungo la stazione e a- spetto l’1. Un quarto d’ora di bus. E mi trovo in coda al ceck-in per il volo Ryanair da Orio a Charleroi. Da lì un bus-navetta mi porta in meno di un’ora a Bruxelles. Tutto qui. Il volo mi costa 36 euro e 48 centesimi, andata e ritorno. Tanti, per un mio coetaneo africano che in Somalia ci campa un mese. Ma qui non basta-no per fare un giretto in macchina da Bergamo a Milano. E non mi sono bastati neanche per spe-dire a Parigi 4 DVD che non pesano più di mezzo chilo: mi costa meno salire sull’aereo e portarli a Parigi, i DVD e i miei 73 chili. Follia? Difficile farsene una ragione. Forse devo smette-re di pensare che tutto dovrebbe essere giusto, buono, umano. È evidente che non è così. I dinosauri non sono scomparsi, hanno fatto il lifting e dominano il mondo. È possibile vivere sorridendo e portare a spasso il cagnolino, come fa il presidente, o potare le rose ascoltando Wa-gner, e insieme mandare tanti giovani a uccidere e morire. Non c’è contraddizione. Il male e il bene si scambiano spesso la maschera, e dentro questo teatro facciamo confusione. Il frastuono del nostro fare quotidiano copre lo scricchiolio di ossa che è il vero tappeto sonoro della nostra storia. Ma non è ancora vietato, anche se disdicevole e di poca resa, voltare le spalle alla logica della sopraffazione e del denaro, e occuparsi d’altro. Nell’intervallo tra il primo vagito e l’ululato del-l’agonia, si distende largo e lungo, a perdita d’oc-chio, un imprevedibile mare di infinite malie.

Partir: séparer, se séparer.

Partir 1 Ce livre est un hommage au Hasard. Un acte de non volonté. En 2006, je pars et je repars pour Gent, six fois. Ma destination, Gent, est le fruit du hasard. Aucun but particulier, si ce n’est l’exploration vagabonde. Le plaisir de l’abandon des sens à un itinéraire gratuit. Doublement gratuit. N’exagérons pas: low cost. C’est bien de ne pas beaucoup dépenser. L’appareil numérique prend sans réserve des centaines de photos. Gratis. Pas de pellicule à développer et à tirer. Des photos occasionnelles, de qui au détour du hasard tourne une page et se plonge dans une autre histoire. Mais ce n’est pas une autre histoire. Il n’y a qu’une seule vie. Il n’y a pas une autre histoire ni un autre monde. Tout est là. Les différences sont négligeables. Elles deviennent fortes quand la peur et la haine les rendent fortes. Je voudrais enterrer toutes les armes et avec elles tous les chefs, les malades de pouvoir.

2 Je sors de chez moi, un sac léger à la main et je vais à pied à Bruxelles. C’est à dire: j’arrive à la gare et j’attends le 1.

Un quart d’heure de bus. Et je me retrouve au fond de la queue du check-in pour le vol Ryanair de Orio à Charleroi. De là une navette me transporte à Bruxelles en moins d’une heure. C’est tout. Le vol me coûte 34 euros 54, allée-retour. Beaucoup, pour un de mes frères d’Afrique qui en vivrait en Somalie pendant un mois. Mais ici, ils ne suffisent même pas pour faire un petit tour de Bergame à Milan en voiture. Et ils ne m’ont pas non plus suffi pour envoyer à Paris 4 DVD qui ne pèsent pas plus d’un demi-kilo: cela me coûte moins cher de monter dans un avion et de les amener à Paris, les DVD et mes 74 kilos. De la folie? Difficile de s’en faire une raison. Je dois peut-être arrêter de penser que tout devrait être juste, bon, humain. Il est évident qu’il n’en est pas ainsi. Les reptiles n’ont pas disparu, il ont fait un lifting et ils dominent le monde. Il est possible de vivre le sourire aux lèvres et de promener son petit chien, comme le fait le président, ou bien de tailler ses rosiers en écoutant du Wagner, et en même temps d’envoyer nombre de jeunes tuer et mourir. Aucune contradiction. Le mal et le bien échangent souvent leur masque, et on a du mal à se retrouver dans cette comédie. Le vacarme de nos actions quotidiennes couvre le craquement d’os qui est le véritable tapis sonore de notre histoire. Mais il n’est pas encore interdit, même si c’est déplacé et peu rentable, de tourner le dos à la logique de la vexation et de l’argent, et de s’occuper d’autre chose. Dans l’intervalle entre le premier vagissement et le hurlement de l’agonie, s’étend, à perte de vue, large et longue, une mer imprévisible de séductions infinies.

3 La vie n’est après tout pas un si grand mal: il suffit de s’écarter et d’attendre qu’elle passe. Ou bien, tant qu’on peut, de s’ouvrir et de se confondre. Entrelacer son regard avec celui des autres, ses pas avec les pas d’autrui, son souffle avec les autres souffles.

L’avion, le train, le bus, réunissent au hasard un ensemble de corps. Mon voyage est parfaitement casuel. Je n’ai aucune raison d’aller à Gent. Je ne connais personne à Gent. L’ensemble provisoire des corps comme des gouttes de pluie qui s’amoncellent sur le rocher. Qui glissent sous l’action du vent. Et qui se rassemblent là où la pente se fait conque paisible. Solitudes balbutiantes dans l’attente d’un sourire.

4 Parcourir le monde les mains dans les poches. Pas de bagages. Seulement ma montre pour ne pas rater le bus, le train, l’avion. Se confondre dans la cohue d’un tram. Le néerlandais est une langue parfaitement incompréhensible. Des brides de conversation inconnues. Les sons des voix, dans leurs modulations infinies. Une main sur l’épaule, un sourire gentil. Ils descendent, ils montent. Des étudiants aux dentures enviables. Aux cheveux épais. Dans le train qui va de Gent à Bruxelles, deux couples âgés causent à voix basse avec une délicatesse jamais vue. Un homme s’adresse à un autre, qui l’écoute avec intérêt et ne l’interrompt pas. La femme en face, tenant avec grâce un sandwich, dit quelque chose et l’homme lui répond calmement.

5 Nous nous voyons comme des personnes démocratiques, civilisées. Nos relations sont polies, que diable, il y a longtemps qu’on est sorti des cavernes! Excuse-moi, je peux te poser une question? Bien sûr. Je n’arrive pas à y croire! Je reconnais que je me suis trompé, mais donne-moi une autre possibilité. Tout va bien? Les simagrées de notre époque moderne révèlent un modèle unique auquel se conformer. Nous sommes libres. Mais nous faisons tous les mêmes choses. Nous achetons les mêmes jouets. Nous prononçons les mêmes paroles vagues. Et nous sommes vraiment tolérants, tant que n’est pas remis en question notre mode de vie, le modèle du troupeau.

Van Eyck Jan Van Eyck, Flemish painter of first half of the way of fourteenth century, travelled in Europe on diplomatic missions and set up home in Bruges. As leader of the Flemish Renaissance School he marked the passage from the medieval vision of the late Gothics to a modern figurative naturalism. He devised an oil painting technique which gave transparency to colours and a new rendering tridimensionality. His most well-known work is the great polyptych in twenty compartments The worship of the mystic lamb kept in the chapel of St Bavone’s church in Gent. Van Eyck’s objective and analytical brushwork has not bestowed any beauty upon the figures of Adam and Eve, the first monumental nudes in the history of Northern European painting. A downright refusal of an Ideal Beauty. In his aggressive and stern interpretation of the physique they have an unprecedented visual and psychological rawness. It represents a new visual culture founded upon the meticulous examination of reality, portrayed with extreme naturalism in every detail without preconstituted hierarchies. So great is Van Eyck’s loyalty to the principles of his art, for which objectivity is a moral duty, that he suffocates the temptation to embellish or soften the features so as not to commit the sin of being insincere with himself. Gent Gent, 230.000 inhabitants, capital of Western Flanders, rises up on the banks of the Lys and Schelda rivers. It’s an industrial city and the heart of Flemish culture. It owes it’s economic prosperity to the wool trade which became an industry in the 12th century. In Gent at that time, as in Bruges and Courtrai, there were Beghard monasteries founded by the monk Lambert of Liege, who was nicknamed the Stutterer (Le Bègue). There were widows who dedicated their lives to charity work, living in communes and taking vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. The movement was condemned as heretic and excommunicated at the start of the 14th century. Gent was ruled by the counts of Flanders, who were was subjects of the French crown and in the 16th century it came under the Hapsburg dominion; it took part in the revolt of the Netherlands against Philip II of Spain and sustained by a Calvinist government. In Gent in 1576 a pact of allegiance between Catholics and Protestants of the Netherlands was signed in which they vowed to help one another to obtain the freedom of the country from the Spanish after the pillage of Antwerp. Gent became part of the kingdom of Belgium in 1831. It’s political life was long dominated by the middle class patriciate but the presence of a strong industrial proletariat made Gent into Belgium’s socialist stronghold.

6 On va bien ou on va mal? On va bien quand le petit monde qui nous entoure nous ressemble. Quand celui qui nous écoute ne regarde pas les mouches et ne pense pas à sa prochaine boutade. Quand on ne joue pas à qui est le plus con. Quand on a besoin d’un baiser et qu’on en reçoit un. Dans notre tête, nous avons beaucoup d’oisillons au bec grand ouvert. Et chaque bec prétend à son vermisseau. Il y a l’oisillon de la faim et de la soif. Celui de la démangeaison sexuelle. De la connaissance. De la soif de conquête. De la vanité. De la peur de la fin. Chaque oisillon prétend à sa part.

Quand on a des douleurs lancinantes jour et nuit, on s’en fout de l’histoire et de la géographie, et quand on a laissé échapper son dernier gémissement, le pape peut bien disparaître avec sa grande coupole et sa belle théologie. Mais tant qu’il y a la vie, il y a la réalité. Quelle merveille! Ramper avec le ver, sautiller avec le moineau, sommeiller au soleil avec le chat, lécher une peau soyeuse, sentir en un seul instant tous les sentiments de toujours, l’art le plus sublime et la bave catarrheuse. Gent Avec ses 230.000 habitants, chef-lieu de la Flandre orientale, Gent se trouve sur les rives des fleuves Lys et Schelda. Une ville industrielle et le principal centre culturel flamand. L’essor de son économie est dû au travail de la laine qui devient industrie au XIIe siècle. Comme à Bruges et à Courtrai, surgirent à cette époque-là des monastères de béguines conçus par le moine Lambert de Liège surnommé le Bègue. Il s’agissait de veuves qui se consacraient aux oeuvres de charité, qui vivaient en communauté et observaient la chasteté, la pauvreté et l’obéissance. Ce mouvement fut combattu comme hérétique et excommunié au début du XIVe siècle. Gent fut assujettie aux comtes de Flandre, vassaux du royaume de France et au XVIe siècle elle fit partie des domaines des Habsbourg; elle participa à la révolte des Pays-Bas contre Philippe II d’Espagne et elle fut gouvernée par un gouvernement calviniste. En1576, fut stipulé un pacte d’alliance entre les catholiques et les protestants des Pays-Bas, qui s’engageaient à s’entraider pour délivrer le pays des espagnols après le sac d’Anvers. Depuis 1831, Gent fait partie du royaume de Belgique. Sa vie politique a été longtemps dominée par le patriciat bourgeois, mais la présence d’un fort prolétariat industriel a fait de Gent la citadelle du socialisme en Belgique.

When everyone’s not having a “who’s the biggest bastard?” competition. When we need a kiss and we get one. Our heads are filled with baby birds with their beaks wide open. Each one is waiting for their worm. There’s the hunger bird and the thirst bird. There’s one for sexual desire, one for knowledge, one for the lust to conquer, one for vanity and one for fear about the end of everything. Every little bird wants its share.

7 Reality. What else? The body contains the soul and not the other way round. We’ve got endless needs. We need everything. A hot meal, someone to embrace and God we can pin our hopes on. But the game is all played out inside our body. When you’re in terrible pain day and night, you couldn’t give a damn about history and geography. When you’ve let out your last cry the pope, St. Peter’s Dome and theology can all just disappear for all you care. But as long as there’s life there’s reality. Great. Slither with the worm, hop with the sparrow, doze with the cat, lap a silky skin, feel for a moment all you’ll ever feel, from the most sublime art to the catarrhal dribble. I am everyone. My soul is all souls. My body contains the bodies of all times, all the agonies, all the happiness.

Students with enviable teeth. With thick hair. On the train from Gent to Brussels, two elderly couples are chatting quietly with such delicacy as I’ve never seen before. A man turns to speak to his companion who listens interestedly without interrupting. The woman opposite who is gracefully holding a sandwich, says something to him and the man answers calmly.

Of course. I don’t believe it! I know I was wrong but give me another chance. Alright? The affected ways of modern times reveal a sole role-model which everyone conforms to. We’re free. Yet we all do the same things. We buy the same toys. We say the same general things and we really are tolerant, that is until someone starts questioning our lifestyle, the gang’s role-model.

1 This book is a tribute to Chance. A purely involuntary decision. In 2006 I left for Gent again and again, six times in all. I chose Gent as my destination completely by chance. I didn’t have any particular aim in mind other than to roam the country and explore. The pleasure of abandoning my senses to a completely free itinerary. Free in two respects. Well, not to exaggerate I should say: low cost. It’s great travelling cheap. You can go wild with a digital camera taking hundreds of photos. All completely free. No films to develop or print. Chance snapshots by someone who happens to turn over the page and immerse themselves in another story. But it’s not another story. We’ve only got one life. There’s no other story or other world. It’s all here. You can forget about the differences. They’re only made strong if fear and hate make them strong. I’d like to bury all weapons along with the leaders of anything whatsoever, sick with their power.

2 I left home with a light bag and went on foot to

Brussels, or rather I got to the station and waited for the N°1. A quarter of an hour bus ride and I’m in the queue at the check-in for the Ryanair flight from Orio to Charleroi. Once there, I got the shuttle which took me to Brussels in less than an hour. That’s all there is to it. The flight cost me 36 euros and 48 cents return. A lot for an African the same age as me, who could live off it for a month in Somalia. Here, though, it’s not enough to go for a drive from Bergamo to Milan. It wasn’t even enough for me to send 4 DVDs to Paris and they didn’t weigh more than half a kilo: it costs me less to get on the plane to Paris and take the DVDs and my 73 kilos there myself. Is it madness? It’s difficult to come to terms with it. Maybe I should stop thinking that everything should be fair, good and human. It’s obvious that’s not how it is. The dinosaurs haven’t disappeared, they’ve had a face-lift done and now they’re ruling the world. It’s possible to smile and take your dog for a walk, like the president does or prune your roses while listening to Wagner and at the same time send many young people off to kill and die. There’s no contradiction. Good and evil often swap masks and it’s easy for us to get confused in this theatre. The din of our daily lives covers up the crunching of bones which is the real soundtrack to our history. Although it’s unseemly and you don’t get much in return, it’s still not prohibited to turn your back on the overpowering logic of money and do something different. In the interval between the first stirrings and the howl of agony, an unpredictable sea of infinite enchantment stretches out far and wide, as far as the eye can see.

Gent Gent, 230.000 inhabitants, capital of Western Flanders, rises up on the banks of the Lys and Schelda rivers. It’s an industrial city and the heart of Flemish culture. It owes it’s economic prosperity to the wool trade which became an industry in the 12th century. In Gent at that time, as in Bruges and Courtrai, there were Beghard monasteries founded by the monk Lambert of Liege, who was nicknamed the Stutterer (Le Bègue). There were widows who dedicated their lives to charity work, living in communes and taking vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. The movement was condemned as heretic and excommunicated at the start of the 14th century. Gent was ruled by the counts of Flanders, who were was subjects of the French crown and in the 16th century it came under the Hapsburg dominion; it took part in the revolt of the Netherlands against Philip II of Spain and sustained by a Calvinist government. In Gent in 1576 a pact of allegiance between Catholics and Protestants of the Netherlands was signed in which they vowed to help one another to obtain the freedom of the country from the Spanish after the pillage of Antwerp. Gent became part of the kingdom of Belgium in 1831. It’s political life was long dominated by the middle class patriciate but the presence of a strong industrial proletariat made Gent into Belgium’s socialist stronghold.

Quand on ne joue pas à qui est le plus con. Quand on a besoin d’un baiser et qu’on en reçoit un. Dans notre tête, nous avons beaucoup d’oisillons au bec grand ouvert. Et chaque bec prétend à son vermisseau. Il y a l’oisillon de la faim et de la soif. Celui de la démangeaison sexuelle. De la connaissance. De la soif de conquête. De la vanité. De la peur de la fin. Chaque oisillon prétend à sa part.

L’avion, le train, le bus, réunissent au hasard un ensemble de corps. Mon voyage est parfaitement casuel. Je n’ai aucune raison d’aller à Gent. Je ne connais personne à Gent. L’ensemble provisoire des corps comme des gouttes de pluie qui s’amoncellent sur le rocher. Qui glissent sous l’action du vent. Et qui se rassemblent là où la pente se fait conque paisible. Solitudes balbutiantes dans l’attente d’un sourire.

4 Parcourir le monde les mains dans les poches. Pas de bagages. Seulement ma montre pour ne pas rater le bus, le train, l’avion. Se confondre dans la cohue d’un tram. Le néerlandais est une langue parfaitement incompréhensible. Des brides de conversation inconnues. Les sons des voix, dans leurs modulations infinies. Une main sur l’épaule, un sourire gentil. Ils descendent, ils montent. Des étudiants aux dentures enviables. Aux cheveux épais. Dans le train qui va de Gent à Bruxelles, deux couples âgés causent à voix basse avec une délicatesse jamais vue. Un homme s’adresse à un autre, qui l’écoute avec intérêt et ne l’interrompt pas. La femme en face, tenant avec grâce un sandwich, dit quelque chose et l’homme lui répond calmement.

5 Nous nous voyons comme des personnes démocratiques, civilisées. Nos relations sont polies, que diable, il y a longtemps qu’on est sorti des cavernes! Excuse-moi, je peux te poser une question? Bien sûr. Je n’arrive pas à y croire! Je reconnais que je me suis trompé, mais donne-moi une autre possibilité. Tout va bien? Les simagrées de notre époque moderne révèlent un modèle unique auquel se conformer. Nous sommes libres. Mais nous faisons tous les mêmes choses. Nous achetons les mêmes jouets. Nous prononçons les mêmes paroles vagues. Et nous sommes vraiment tolérants, tant que n’est pas remis en question notre mode de vie, le modèle du troupeau.

Van Eyck Jan Van Eyck, Flemish painter of first half of the way of fourteenth century, travelled in Europe on diplomatic missions and set up home in Bruges. As leader of the Flemish Renaissance School he marked the passage from the medieval vision of the late Gothics to a modern figurative naturalism. He devised an oil painting technique which gave transparency to colours and a new rendering tridimensionality. His most well-known work is the great polyptych in twenty compartments The worship of the mystic lamb kept in the chapel of St Bavone’s church in Gent. Van Eyck’s objective and analytical brushwork has not bestowed any beauty upon the figures of Adam and Eve, the first monumental nudes in the history of Northern European painting. A downright refusal of an Ideal Beauty. In his aggressive and stern interpretation of the physique they have an unprecedented visual and psychological rawness. It represents a new visual culture founded upon the meticulous examination of reality, portrayed with extreme naturalism in every detail without preconstituted hierarchies. So great is Van Eyck’s loyalty to the principles of his art, for which objectivity is a moral duty, that he suffocates the temptation to embellish or soften the features so as not to commit the sin of being insincere with himself. Un quart d’heure de bus. Et je me retrouve au fond de la queue du check-in pour le vol Ryanair de Orio à Charleroi. De là une navette me transporte à Bruxelles en moins d’une heure. C’est tout. Le vol me coûte 34 euros 54, allée-retour. Beaucoup, pour un de mes frères d’Afrique qui en vivrait en Somalie pendant un mois. Mais ici, ils ne suffisent même pas pour faire un petit tour de Bergame à Milan en voiture. Et ils ne m’ont pas non plus suffi pour envoyer à Paris 4 DVD qui ne pèsent pas plus d’un demi-kilo: cela me coûte moins cher de monter dans un avion et de les amener à Paris, les DVD et mes 74 kilos. De la folie? Difficile de s’en faire une raison. Je dois peut-être arrêter de penser que tout devrait être juste, bon, humain. Il est évident qu’il n’en est pas ainsi. Les reptiles n’ont pas disparu, il ont fait un lifting et ils dominent le monde. Il est possible de vivre le sourire aux lèvres et de promener son petit chien, comme le fait le président, ou bien de tailler ses rosiers en écoutant du Wagner, et en même temps d’envoyer nombre de jeunes tuer et mourir. Aucune contradiction. Le mal et le bien échangent souvent leur masque, et on a du mal à se retrouver dans cette comédie. Le vacarme de nos actions quotidiennes couvre le craquement d’os qui est le véritable tapis sonore de notre histoire. Mais il n’est pas encore interdit, même si c’est déplacé et peu rentable, de tourner le dos à la logique de la vexation et de l’argent, et de s’occuper d’autre chose. Dans l’intervalle entre le premier vagissement et le hurlement de l’agonie, s’étend, à perte de vue, large et longue, une mer imprévisible de séductions infinies.

3 La vie n’est après tout pas un si grand mal: il suffit de s’écarter et d’attendre qu’elle passe. Ou bien, tant qu’on peut, de s’ouvrir et de se confondre. Entrelacer son regard avec celui des autres, ses pas avec les pas d’autrui, son souffle avec les autres souffles.
