WHAT IS GENRE?• Genres are important within music, they help to differentiate between

different styles and sounds. They help audiences to recognise elements within music which they think they may like. Genre also helps music industries organise these elements into categorise so they can then sell the brands to the consumers- keeps the sales soaring- for example certain genres of music go through particularly significant periods of time where they are incredibly popular – crazes.

• Different genres/ new aspects of genre are appearing regularly- this is due to the gradual changes within the needs and gratifications of the audiences.

• Genre can be categorized into very broad or very narrow spectrums. An example of probably the most narrow category would be fiction and non fiction. Within both of those groups of genre you will find a wider more distinct selection of genres that can be seen as very specific. An example within music would be Rock music or R&B.

WHAT IS THE HOUSE GENRE?• Definition: “House is a genre of

electronic dance music and has been the current standard of “club music” since the late eighties…The mood, compared to disco, is typically a bit darker and minimalist as house music uses many other sounds including synths, funk, and soul. It is also the easiest dance music genre to combine with other genres to produce a new sound, like disco house, electro house, and tribal house.”

Origin:• Said to have Originated in Chicago's

Southside in 1977- early 80’s.• Target audience: part targeted at the

gay community- its aim was to unit people from different backgrounds into a community through dance- unify people of all races, backgrounds and sexual orientations.

• Became more popular within the UK through during the late 80’s due to the clubbing scenes within Ibiza and the need from the younger generations dissatisfaction with the current music being produced as it was deems meaningless.
