GENRE RESEARCH
From this Genre Research we can contemplate which ‘documentary mode’ our
documentary is most likely to be classified as. From such research, 5 modes were
discovered:
• expository
• observational
• interactive/participatory
• reflexive
• performative
From the research, it was
found that expository was
most relevant to our documen-
tary, while the others less so
and so I will only touch on the
other four slightly.
BASIC OUTLINE OF DOCUMENTARY MODES
EXPOSITORYMODE IN MORE DETAIL
This research confirmed that
our documentary would be
mainly classed as expository:
• our audience is invited to share
our anti-anorexic and effects of
new media thoughts.
• rather than a ‘voice of god’
however, text will anchor the
meaning of images. We may
include small amounts of
commentary to anchor the
narrative and structure, however
not 1 voiceover to carry the
whole documentary as
‘expository’ suggests.
• expository documentaries
‘centre on a problem that needs
solving’ which ours aims to do.
• expository documentaries such
‘dramatic techniques’, from our
textual analysis we found these
‘shock’ tactics conventional, and
so something we could take
forward in our documentary.
OBSERVATIONAL MODE
This mode is not
wholly relevant for our
documentary, however
can't be ruled out as of
no use.
• Our documentary, as
observational mode
suggests, will want to
appear observational
(un-edited and real,
raw footage) through
methods of editing and
filming to develop a
sense of realism.
PARTICIPATORY/ INTERACTIVE MODE
This research on participatory mode
has confirmed our documentary cannot
be classed as participatory.
PERFORMATIVE MODE
Similarly to research on
participatory mode, this
research on performative
mode has confirmed our
documentary cannot be
classed as performative as
there are not enough
characteristics of the mode
that match the
characteristics of our
documentary.
