Transcript of Genre 2
Brittany Morgan
I chose to focus on the genre of Indie Rock music. The reason behind this decision is that I listen to this genre more than the other common genres
such as Pop or Heavy Metal. The term indie rock, derived from "independent," describes the small and relatively low-budget labels on
which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved. Indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include indie
pop, jangle pop, C86, and lo-fi, among others.
My chosen genre
Key components 1
Hair: Indie Rock musicians often
don’t have a particular hair cut all of
them go by. The hair cuts they have are
messy and un-styled as if no effort as
been put into them though in some
cases their hair has been styled to look
‘effortless’
Lighting: From looking at photos taken of
some Indie Rock bands the lighting within
them seem to highlight the musicians faces
and also create definition through shadowing
some parts of them. These can be created
through lights being positioned to one side of
the band, be it left or right.

Key Components 3
Posing: The posing in these particular
photos are of them just being
themselves. The audience perceives
these bands as laid back as the pictures
show minimal effort with their posing.
Although these people may have
been directed to look un-posed to
create this certain perception.
Background: Through my research of the
backgrounds of photos presenting Indie Rock
bands, I have found that the background colour
is either quite bland and not vibrant or is a
backdrop of a street. This could represent that
there is no artificial side to them, they create
completely raw music. The bland colours also
could show that the band is the highlight of the
photo not the ‘decoration’.
Key Components 4
For my own music magazine to fit in the style of Indie Rock genre I’m going to have to try and recreate all of the key components. First of all the models I will have to photograph are going to have to have messy hair similar to the
hair styles I’ve found in my research. I will either have to wait for a certain time of the day to get the lighting low enough to create the shadow effect on the face of the person or I will have to create this effect using my own
lighting such as a lamp to the left or right of the model. I will have to instruct the model to look at ease and relax into a natural position or I could take an
action shot of them walking or moving their hair out of the way. The background I would like to use is a brick wall in a street or a set of steps so
that they can sit in different poses. This background will coincide with some of the backgrounds I have researched.
