Palazzo BiancoVia Garibaldi, 11 (B6)This building was constructed between 1530 and 1540 for the Grimaldi family. In 1884 the Duchess of Galliera, Maria Brignole-Sale De Ferrari, donated the residence to the city, together with a significant collection of historic and modern works of art, with the ambition of establishing a public art gallery, which the city was still lacking at the time. In addition to masterpieces by artists such as Caravaggio, Veronese, Rubens, Van Dyck and Murillo, the building is home to a great collection of Genoese paintings from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including canvases by Cambiaso, Strozzi, Piola and Magnasco.

Palazzo RossoVia Garibaldi, 18 (B6)Home of the Brignole Sale family, it dates back to the 17th century. Inside it you can admire frescoes by some of the 16th century’s great Ligurian painters such as Piola, De Ferrari, Carlone and Tavella. In the year 1874 the Duchess of Galliera, Maria Brignole-Sale De Ferrari, donated the property to her city. To this day its luxurious halls exhibit exquisite furnishings and a rich collection of masterpieces by artists such as Dürer, Veronese, Guercino, Grechetto, Strozzi and Van Dyck. The view from the “Mirador” panoramic terrace cannot be missed, as it offers a splendid view over the historic centre and the whole city.

MUSEUMS IN THE CITY CENTRE

MUSEI DI STRADA NUOVA Via Garibaldi, the grandiose “New Street” of 16th-century Genoa, and its elegant historic buildings were declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2006. Today it is also home to a series of art museums. Together, Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi offer visitors an extensive artistic route, where each building retains its own unique character and which has transformed the elegant Via Garibaldi into a real “museum street”.

MIRADOR DI PAlAzzO ROSSOThe terrace of Palazzo Rosso has opened recently and is reached via the elevator. It is located in a strategic position at the very summit of the roof, where it overlooks the historic city centre, the Old Port and the hills beyond, offering visitors a 360° panoramic view of the city. Known as the ‘Mirador’, the terrace was part of the original building and used to be accessible only by internal service stairs.

In addition to pottery and tapestries, the building is also home to the famous Guarnerius violin that belonged to Niccolò Paganini, the “cursed” musician born in Genoa in 1782, as well as to the Penitent Magdalene by Canova (1790).

Palazzo Doria TursiVia Garibaldi, 9 (B6)The construction of this building began in 1565 at the request of Niccolò Grimaldi. It is the most magnificent of Via Garibaldi’s palatial buildings, and the only one with two large gardens. FLEMISHPAINTINGAt the heart of the museum of Palazzo Bianco, visitors start on a journey through four rooms of Flemish painting from the 16th and 17th centuries. Thanks to its precocious trade and economic links with the Flanders, Genoa became one of the first “emporiums” of Flemish art in Italy. From the beginning of the 16th century, there are masterpieces by Hans Memling and Gérard David; from later that century you can see the typical subjects and styles of Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer that greatly influenced Strozzi and other Genoese painters of the time; from the 17th century there are Venus and Mars, a masterpiece by Peter Paul Rubens and Vertumnus and Pomona by Anton Van Dyck.

one of the most intriguing medieval buildings in Europe. It dates back to 1180 and is made up of a double medieval church, an adjoining hospitalis, oratories and a monastic building that has undergone a series of transformations over the years. The Commenda was established as a place to support and assist pilgrims and crusaders as they headed for and returned from the Holy Land. It was known as a gathering point for people from all backgrounds and cultures. In 2009, after years of restoration work, a Museum Theatre was arranged in this fascinating setting, where historic documents are animated and vocalised into tales and spectacles thanks to an innovative multimedia exhibition that doesn’t detract from the beauty and impact of the architecture. The main theme of the exhibition is strictly linked to the concept of inter-culturalism: Nobody should feel like a foreigner in Genoa.

CHRISTOPHER COlUMBUS

AT CASTEllO D’AlBERTIS The castle was conceived as a homage to the navigator, much admired by the Captain. The frescoes depict the caravels leaving from Palos and arriving in San Salvador, the sundial next to a bust of Columbus indicates the time in San Salvador and the reliefs commemorate his caravels. Also on display is a sculpture of Young Columbus, the work of Giulio Monteverde. Each and every detail is a tribute to Columbus by D’Albertis, who even repeated his famous voyage of discovery in 1893 using exact replicas of his nautical instruments while crossing the Atlantic.

THE SAlOTTO TURCO(TuRKISHDRAwING-ROOM)Lavishly furnished by the Captain, the Turkish Drawing-Room (Salotto Turco) reflects the late 19th-century fascination with everything exotic. It is a romantic evocation of a nomadic middle-eastern world that fascinated the West at that time, represented here by objects and furniture originating from China, India, Japan, Turkey and Persia.

EDOARDO CHIOSSONEEdoardo Chiossone (Arenzano 1833 - Tokyo 1898) was a professor of engraving and graduate of the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti of Genoa. He was called to Tokyo by the Japanese Emperor to take charge of the new paper money printing house for the Ministry of Finance. During his 24 year stay in Japan he developed a great interest in all types of figurative art that is reflected in his private collection, which he later donated to the city.

THEKIMONOSince the 16th century, kosode, known today as kimono, have been the standard model of traditional Japanese dress (wafuku). Long, ankle-length garments, kimono has a straight, rectangular cut sleeve-shoulder-line and a flat lapel from the neck down to two thirds of the wearer’s height (eri). Worn by wrapping the two front flaps around the chest, it is secured by a sash, called the obi. Kosode, literally “small sleeve”, is worn by adult and married women, whereas furisode, “swinging sleeves”, is worn by young girls and unmarried women.

MARGHERITADIBRABANTEThe monument to Margherita di Brabante is an intense modern masterpiece by the most original and liberal sculptor of 14th-century Europe, Giovanni Pisano. At the Museo di Sant’Agostino, today we can see the remains of the great monument erected by Margherita’s husband, the emperor Henry VII, for his beloved wife who died in Genoa in 1311 at 36 and was immediately revered as a saint. Little is known of the original aspect of the monument, which was located in the church of San Francesco di Castelletto until it was demolished and the pieces scattered at the beginning of the 19th century, along with the church and convent. The few remaining fragments, however, reveal a new and moving understanding of the sepulchre, in which the queen casts an impassioned and hopeful gaze at the sky, unprecedented in art if not in the stanzas of Dante’s Divine Comedy.

example of a romantic park with an acute scenic impact. A walk through the sinuous paths amid neoclassical, neo-Gothic and rustic architecture, flanked by either exotic plants or laurels and holm-oaks, turns into a three-act story with a prologue and joyful epilogue. Not to be missed are the scenery of lake, with its garden temples and bridges, and the path of

GiardinoBotanicoThe Clelia Durazzo Botanical Gardens were founded in 1794 with clear didactic intentions. The collections of exotic plants extend from the foot of the Villa and offer a significant scientific contribution in the fields of ecology and botany. Museo di Archeologia ligureIn the vast halls of the Villa, the Museum of Ligurian Archaeology offers an in-depth look at Liguria’s most distant past. The ‘journey’ begins with the prehistoric bears that roamed the territory 80,000 years ago and the Palaeolithic burial site discovered in

Atrueprince? The deepest ever excavations at the caves of Arene Candide, at about 7 meters below ground, uncovered the oldest burial remains ever found at the site, dating back about 24,000 years. The remains are those of a young man, about 15 years of age, tall, well-built, who died from a violent injury: a huge wound that destroyed the left half of his jaw and cut into his shoulder. Those who buried him did so on a bed of red ochre, which has saturated the skeleton, and also attempted to reconstruct the face, trying to mask the wound with yellow ochre. The treasures that accompanied him to the grave are also extraordinary: a cap made of shells, bracelets and pendants made of shells and mammoth ivory, a flint blade of exceptional length and, slung over one shoulder, four decorated and perforated elk antler batons. A young prince, therefore, with the regalia of a leader? Certainly not in the way we think of a prince today, but without doubt he was an important individual. Perhaps one of the best hunters in his tribe, killed whilst out hunting.

ARTURO MARTINIThe artist’s work is part of the collection of the Modern Art Gallery and comprises the splendid terracotta sculpture The Convalescent. It is one of the most moving pieces in the museum, made by the sculptor in 1932 when he was inspired by the face of his daughter Maria, which he transfigured and captured in a timeless impression of universal and intense humanity. The same sentiment transpires from the decorative tone of his Nativity scene, in coloured ceramics with a number of defects that evidently appeared whilst in the kiln. The scene was exhibited at the 3rd International Exhibition of Decorative Art in Monza in 1927 and comes from the private collection of architect Mario Labò.
