iQ Collection: a choice of customised interiors

Marking the start of an ongoing programme, the new iQ Collection satisfies customer demand for wider scope in the personalisation of their cars through a choice of two new customised interiors.

A new exterior colour, bronze Mica, is also available. And interior ergonomic and quality enhancements have been made across the iQ model range.

RAV4 2010: a more sophisticated design

Making its European debut at Geneva, the RAV4 2010 features a more sophisticated front design and a more refined interior.

The entire engine line-up now benefits from Toyota Optimal Drive technology, making it one of the cleanest powertrain ranges in the compact SUV segment.

Auris Hybrid Synergy Drive® (HSD)

The Auris Hybrid Synergy Drive® (HSD) makes its world debut at the 2010 Geneva motor show. Its launch marks a major milestone in the planned deployment of the Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain across Toyota’s entire model range by early 2020s.

The Auris 2010 model range has dynamic new styling and improved interior quality, combined with a choice of six Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains or HSD. A unique offer of clean engine technologies at the heart of the C-segment.

FT-86 Concept

Also making its first appearance in Europe is the Toyota FT-86 sports concept, paying homage to the company’s long history of exciting sports cars such as the Celica, MR2 and Supra.

The front engine, rear-wheel drive FT-86 concept features highly aerodynamic styling and an ergonomically ideal, driver-oriented cockpit. The sports concept has been made as compact and lightweight as possible to maximise its performance, agility and driving pleasure.

Commitment to sustainable mobility

With 2.3 million hybrid vehicles already sold worldwide, Toyota has an unassailable lead in the drive towards sustainable mobility.

Three generations of the multiple award-winning Prius have seen significant improvements to Toyota’s full hybrid drivertain, Hybrid Synergy Drive®, which will serve as a core technology applicable to all future models. The system is modular and readily adaptable to use in Plug-in Hybrid vehicles (PHV), Electric vehicles (EV) and Fuel Cell Hybrid vehicles (FCHV).

Launched in 2007 at the heart of the highly competitive European C-segment, the Toyota Auris has built a solid reputation for roominess, comfort, practicality and reliability combined with a secure, economical driving experience.

On sale throughout Europe from early spring, the Auris 2010 will continue to appeal to those who prize the peace of mind offered by these core, family hatchback values. However, the revised model will also attract new customers who appreciate the marked improvements it offers in style and interior quality, its more refined driving experience and its wide choice of clean engine technologies.

With a choice of full hybrid drive, and three petrol and three diesel units offering the performance- and economy-enhancing benefits of Toyota Optimal Drive, the Toyota Auris 2010 engine line-up offers customers the most comprehensive range of powertrains in the C-segment.

The application of Toyota Optimal Drive across the Auris range in 2009 has already effected a significant improvement in the model’s environmental performance, lowering CO2 emissions to segment-best levels. Even before the 2010 introduction of Hybrid Synergy Drive® to the model range, the overall Auris CO2 average has been reduced from 152 g/km in 2007 to 142 g/km in 2009.

Exclusively designed for the European market, the Auris HSD introduces full hybrid technology to a core model at the heart of the Toyota line-up, the first step in the deployment of HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive® technology) across the company’s entire European model range by the early 2020s. Built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, it targets an important shift in customer perceptions of full hybrid technology.

Over and above the benefits of exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions inherent in Hybrid Synergy Drive®, the everyday usability, driving comfort and remarkable quietness of Toyota’s full hybrid powertrain will offer the Auris HSD customer a smooth and sophisticated driving experience entirely unique to the C-segment.As a result of Hybrid Synergy Drive® and Toyota Optimal Drive technology, the Auris will be the first Toyota to comply with Euro 5 emission standards across the entire model range by July 2010. Toyota Optimal Drive has lowered CO2 emissions throughout the Auris 2010 engine range, with significant cost of ownership benefits to fleet customers.

With remarkably low less than 99 g/km CO2 emissions , the Auris HSD plays a significant role in further reducing Toyota’s whole-fleet CO2 average which, having fallen by 16 g/km between 2008 and 2009, already stands at just 130 g/km.

The C-segment remains a core element of the volume market, representing almost 20% of total European new car sales. Toyota plans to sell 101,000 Auris models in 2010 and, in 2011 -the first full year of sales with all engine variants available- 130,000 units.

Design

The Auris 2010 combines dynamic exterior design changes with extensive interior improvements in quality, materials, ergonomics, driving comfort, and visual appeal. The Auris HSD incorporates several unique styling details to improve the car’s aerodynamic performance. The interior incorporates hybrid-specific instruments, switchgear and upholstery.

Exteriordesign:astronger,moreconfidentroadpresenceRedesigned bumpers have increased the front and rear overhangs by 15 mm and 10 mm respectively. As a result the Auris 2010 has increased in overall length by 25 mm to 4245 mm, while the long, 2600 mm wheelbase remains unchanged.

With a new horizontal bar-type grille, more aggressive headlamp clusters, LED daytime running lights and a wider lower bumper air intake, the entire front of the Auris 2010 has been restyled to enhance the car’s stable, ground-hugging stance and create a more youthful image.

The rear design has been strengthened to provide a stronger, more confident road presence. The bumper corners have been extended outwards and create a new ‘catamaran’ bumper profile which accentuates the Auris 2010’s muscular proportions and wide track.

The latest addition to the model line-up, the Auris HSD incorporates several unique exterior design features which both improve the car’s overall aerodynamic efficiency and indicate the presence of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain.

The upper grille opening has been optimised to help the air flow smoothly over the upper half of the body, and the size of the lower grille has been enlarged to reduce airflow resistance as well as improving engine cooling efficiency.

Housing a revised foglamp configuration, the flat, vertical surface of the bumper corner not only reinforces the Auris HSD’s broad stance and driving stability, but also corrects airflow as it passes over the front wheels to minimise wheel arch turbulence.

Allied to a 5 mm lowering of vehicle ride height and a choice of purpose-made, 15” or 17” alloy wheels with integrated, aerodynamic caps and low rolling resistance tyres, a large, roof mounted rear spoiler further improves the Auris HSD’s aerodynamic efficiency.

Acting in combination to smooth and control the flow of air over the car, these HSD-specific design modifications have reduced the Toyota hybrid’s coefficient of drag from Cd 0.290 to 0.283, effecting reductions in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The Auris 2010 is available in a choice of six exterior colours, including a new, hybrid-specific Pearl White finish.

Interior design: improvements in quality, ergonomics and visual appealSoft touch materials now cover the top of the driver’s instrument cluster and the upper glove box, and the seat upholstery has been upgraded across the range. The height of the centre console storage box has been raised by about 50 mm, and it now functions as an armrest. A new, more comfortable steering wheel incorporates redesigned audio and Bluetooth® phone control switches.

The unique, bridged centre console which brings the gear lever, handbrake and instrumentation within the closest possible reach of the driver has a new, bright metallic finish matched by the door handles. The handbrake design has been revised with a new lever release button, a tactile, ergonomic grip and lower seating in the release position.

Control panel colour and finish changes have enhanced switch layout visibility, and the illumination of the Optitron meter dials has been changed to white for improved clarity and visibility.

In conjunction with the introduction of Hybrid Synergy Drive®, the Auris HSD interior features several significant modifications. The driver’s instrument binnacle has been revised, with the tachometer replaced by an Eco Drive Assist Monitor. The centre-dial information panel includes additional, Hybrid Synergy Drive®-specific information such as Energy Flow and Eco Drive Result monitors.

A hybrid blue Smart Start switch has been added to the side of the instrument cluster. The centre console incorporates a Parking Control switch, EV, Eco and Power drive mode switches and a shift-by-wire transmission lever with a high-quality silver paint finish.

Auris HSD instrument and switchgear illumination has been amended to greenish white numbers on a hybrid blue background for the meter panel, audio and heating controls, and the Smart Start, Drive Mode and Parking Control switches.

A choice of hybrid-specific upholstery finishes features a standard specification, blue-flecked seat panel fabric, while high grade models are trimmed in Alcantara® panels with leather surrounds.

The Auris 2010 powertrain line-up features a choice of full hybrid drive, and three petrol and three diesel engines offering the performance- and economy-enhancing benefits of Toyota Optimal Drive. The introduction of a Hybrid Synergy Drive® model makes this is the most comprehensive range of powertrains available in the C-segment, catering for every customer requirement.

As a result of Toyota Optimal Drive technology, the Auris will be the first Toyota to comply with Euro 5 emission standards across the entire European model range by July 2010.

Starting at just 118 g/km, CO2 emissions have been lowered throughout the engine range, offering significant cost of ownership benefits to fleet customers.

The introduction of the Auris HSD will create an important shift in customer perceptions of full hybrid technology. The advantages of exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions are obvious. However, the Auris HSD customer will also experience a smooth and sophisticated driving experience -unique to the C-segment- thanks to the everyday usability, driving comfort and remarkable quietness of Toyota’s multiple award-winning, full hybrid powertrain.

Hybrid Synergy Drive® - Full Hybrid technologyThe new Auris HSD is a full hybrid capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, as well as a combination of both. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive® system delivers the energy-saving benefits of a series hybrid combined with the performance benefits of a parallel hybrid.

Full hybrid technology equips the new Toyota hatchback with impressive, seamless acceleration and remarkably quiet operation, while returning class-leading fuel efficiency and the lowest possible emissions.

The Auris HSD’s latest generation, series/parallel full hybrid system features a 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine, a powerful electric motor, a generator, a high performance battery and a power control unit. A power split device employs a planetary gear set to combine and re-allocate power from the engine, electric motor and generator according to operational requirements.

Key to the successful installation of Hybrid Synergy Drive® within the Auris front-engined platform, the electric motor, generator and power split device are all housed in one transmission casing the size of a conventional gearbox. The full hybrid drive system’s seamless,

electric continuously variable transmission is controlled by shift-by-wire technology, using an electric shift lever system.

System power is provided by a lightweight, highly compact, 4-cylinder, 1798 cc, Atkinson cycle VVT-i petrol engine developing 98 DIN hp at 5200 rpm and 142 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm, and a high performance, permanent magnet, synchronous 60 kW electric motor generating a maximum 207 Nm of torque from 0-13000 rpm.

Powered by the hybrid battery, the electric motor works in tandem with the petrol engine to boost acceleration during normal driving. The electric motor alone powers the driven wheels when the Auris HSD is operating in EV mode.

During deceleration and under braking, the electric motor acts as a high-output generator to effect regenerative braking. Normally wasted as heat, kinetic energy is recovered as electrical energy for storage in the high performance battery.

In combination, the 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor generate a maximum system power output of 136 DIN hp, offering performance to match any conventional 2.0 litre diesel or petrol hatchback. Conversely, the Auris HSD returns low CO2 emissions of less than 99 g/km . In addition, the Auris HSD generates significantly lower NOx emissions than diesel engined cars of comparable performance.

Moreover, when operating in a unique, switchable EV mode, the Auris HSD offers zero CO2 and NOx emissions, driving for up to two kilometres at speeds of up to about 50 km/h, dependant on battery charge and driving conditions.

Unique Auris HSD eco driving experienceThe Auris HSD offers four driving modes, including three on-demand modes, which not only maximise the capabilities of the Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain, but also incorporate comprehensive Eco driving support for those who wish to adopt more environmentally friendly driving techniques.

An EV mode allows for ultra-quiet running on electric motor power alone, resulting in zero fuel consumption and emissions; an ECO mode maximises hybrid system efficiency and fuel economy; and a POWER mode boosts system performance. In addition, an Eco

Drive Monitor helps drivers maximise the fuel efficiency of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® system.

Via the multi-information indicator in the combination meter, drivers may monitor the flow of energy within the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system for each driving mode. This helps them develop relaxed, fuel efficient driving techniques and maximise system efficiency. In addition, a simple yet clear power consumption gauge in the combination meter shows how much power is being used or generated at any given time.

Taking advantage of the inherent operational quietness of Hybrid Synergy Drive®, particular attention has also been paid to Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) reduction measures. This ensures customers enjoy a calm, quiet cabin environment at all vehicle speeds. Road and engine noise have been rigorously suppressed through the comprehensive use of sound-proofing materials. Full thickness glazing and an acoustic windscreen design further reduce wind noise for improved quietness at cruising speeds.

Toyota Optimal Drive applied to all petrol and diesel engines

Designed to optimise the balance of performance and driving enjoyment with fuel economy and low emissions, Toyota Optimal Drive focuses on several key aspects of powertrain development such as environmentally friendly technologies, low friction components, lightweight, compact design and enhanced combustion efficiency.

The application of Toyota Optimal Drive across the Auris range has significantly reduced CO2 emissions. The overall Auris CO2 average has been reduced from 152 g/km in 2007 to 142 g/km in 2009. In 2011, which will be the first full year of Auris range sales, the figure will reduce further to just 125 g/km.

Petrol engines

1.33 litre Dual VVT-i with Stop & Start systemThe 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine generates 73 kW/ 99 DIN hp and maximum torque of 128 Nm at 3800 rpm, while returning an average fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of only 139 g/km.

The unit benefits from numerous Toyota Optimal Drive engine optimisations. A combination of lightweight technology, a resin cylinder head cover and intake manifold, and a remarkably compact design has effected a substantial reduction in engine weight and size. Combustion efficiency has been improved through the use of a high efficiency intake port, a high compression ratio and long reach spark plugs.

Extensive friction reduction measures include enhanced engine block rigidity and bore circularity, an improved valve roller rocker arm design with a new camshaft profile, small, lightweight pistons with a low friction coating, low viscosity oil and a water jacket spacer.

Toyota Optimal Drive’s environmental technologies are represented by the application of a wide ratio 6-speed manual transmission and optional, Stop & Start System technology.

This innovative system automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stopped. The world’s first permanently engaged ring gear mechanism allows for automatic engine restart within half a second when the clutch is lifted, with significant reductions in engine start noise and seat vibration levels.

Thus equipped, the 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i unit’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are lowered still further, to just 5.9 l/100 km and 136 g/km respectively.

1.6 and 1.8 litre Valvematic petrol enginesThe 1.6-litre Valvematic engine develops 132 DIN hp and class-leading maximum torque of 160 Nm at only 4400 rpm. When equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, the unit returns a combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.6 l/100 km and generates CO2 emissions of only 152 g/km. MultiMode transmission further reduces both fuel consumption and emissions, to 6.3 l/100 km and 146 g/km respectively.

The 1.8 litre Valvematic engine develops 147 DIN hp and maximum torque of 180 Nm at 4000 rpm, yet the engine’s combined fuel consumption is only 6.7 l/100 km, and CO2 emissions are 155 g/km.

Through the application of Toyota Optimal Drive, both engines benefit from the same lightweight technology, compact design and combustion efficiency engine optimisations as the 1.33 litre unit.

In addition, friction reduction measures include an improved valve roller rocker arm design with a new camshaft profile, small, lightweight pistons with a low friction coating, enhanced engine block rigidity and bore circularity, and low viscosity oil.

The environmental technologies of Toyota Optimal Drive are represented by the application of wide ratio 6-speed manual transmissions and an optional, MultiMode transmission available with the 1.6 litre unit.

Offering class-leading efficiency, power and torque, Valvematic is a further development of Toyota’s highly successful Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (Dual VVT-i) system.

Adding lift and duration control to the variable inlet valve timing to deliver more power for less fuel consumption with reduced CO2 emissions, Valvematic also reduces friction and pumping losses under light engine loads, further lowering fuel consumption.

Diesel engines

The three diesel engines in the Auris 2010 model range also benefit from the extensive application of Toyota Optimal Drive technologies.

Lightweight technology and a compact design have resulted in a marked reduction in engine weight and size. Numerous combustion efficiency enhancing measures include a lower compression ratio, optimised combustion chamber dimensions, enhanced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler efficiency and stainless steel exhaust manifolds with close-coupled Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF).

The adoption of Piezo injectors is of particular significance. Their high speed reaction time makes multi-phase high speed injection possible. This has the effect of both lowering the rate of combustion expansion and effecting a more thorough burn within the combustion chamber, thus further reducing particulate, NOx and CO2 emissions.

The 2.2 litre engine also benefits from Toyota’s Diesel-Clean Advanced Technology (Toyota D-CAT), which incorporates a Diesel Particulate and NOx Reduction filter (DPNR).

1.4 D-4D 90 diesel engineThe 1.4 litre D-4D engine develops 90 DIN hp and maximum torque of 205 Nm at only 1800 to 2800 rpm, and may be equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for CO2 emissions that are amongst the lowest in the C-segment.

When equipped with the manual transmission and a CCo, the 1.4 D-4D 90 unit returns a combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100 km and generates CO2 emissions of only 124 g/km. Manual versions fitted with a DPF return just 4.5 l/100 km and a remarkable 118 g/km.

This outstanding, 118 g/km CO2 emissions performance has been achieved through combining Toyota Optimal Drive with various measures designed to maximise the aerodynamic and fuel efficiency of the Auris 1.4 D-4D 90, such as lowered suspension and low rolling resistance tyres.

6-speed manual and MultiMode transmissionsEvery engine in the Auris 2010 range is mated to a Toyota Optimal Drive six-speed manual transmission featuring wide-spread ratios designed to optimise fuel consumption and lower CO2.

An optional, MultiMode transmission is available on 1.6 Valvematic petrol and 1.4 D-4D 90 diesel versions. MultiMode is an automated manual transmission with a fully automatic shift mode and no clutch pedal. It offers the driver a choice of two, fully automatic gear change modes or a manual, sequential gear change with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Revised suspension and steering for an improved driving experienceThrough close collaboration between Toyota’s European and Japanese Research and Development teams, the implementation of regional customer feedback and extensive European testing the Auris’ suspension system has been fine-tuned specifically for the customers and roads of the European market. It combines stable high speed driving performance with secure handling and superior ride comfort.

The Auris’ speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) has also been revised and refined to provide better feedback and improved vehicle agility.

In profile, the RAV4 2010 inherits the combination of space-efficient packaging, rising belt-line and distinctive silhouette that has hallmarked successive generations of Toyota’s compact SUV.To the rear, flanked by prominent, high-visibility Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lamp clusters, the side hung back door is deeply indented into the rear bumper, providing a practical, flat and level access step to the interior loadspace. The back door features an integral roof spoiler which houses the high-mounted, LED stop light.

Multidrive S transmissionThe 2.0 litre Valvematic engine can be equipped with the Multidrive S, Toyota’s highly-advanced Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system. Delivering an infinite number of ratios through two cone-shaped pulleys and a high-strength steel belt, Multidrive S offers an incredibly smooth, seamless driving experience.

Because the CVT system maintains the most efficient engine rpm at any given vehicle speed, it combines low cruising-speed noise with high CO2 and fuel efficiency, yet can also maintain the ideal ratio to deliver peak engine power for maximum performance.

A ‘Sport’ button selects a more responsive, power-maximising ratio, delivering a more engaging driving experience. Multidrive S also features a sequential, manual seven-speed mode, with gear selection performed either by the gear shift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.

2.2 litre D-4D 150 diesel engineMated to the six-speed manual transmission, the 2.2 D-4D 150 is available with 2WD or the 4WD Integrated Active Drive System.The 2231cc unit develops 150 DIN hp/110 kW at 3600 rpm and 340 Nm of torque at 2000-2800 rpm. With a maximum speed of 190 km/h, the engine delivers a 2WD 0-100km/h acceleration time of 10.0 seconds, and 10.2 seconds with 4WD.

When mated to the six-speed automatic transmission and 4WD, the 2.2 D-4D 150 unit further benefits from Toyota’s Diesel-Clean Advanced Technology (Toyota D-CAT), which incorporates a Diesel Particulate and NOx Reduction filter (DPNR). Thus equipped, the 2.2 D-4D 150 offers performance of 0-100 km/h in 10.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 185 km/h.

When mated to 4WD, the unit returns class-leading CO2 emissions, for both the manual and the automatic transmission.

Six-speed automatic transmissionThe 2.2 D-4D 150’s six-speed automatic transmission provides a fast, smooth response while maintaining an impressive level of comfort by eliminating harsh shift shocks. A ‘Sport’ mode offers a more aggressive shift pattern using AI-SHIFT Control (Artificial Intelligence Shift Control).

The new transmission also features a newly developed, 6-speed Sports Direct Shift manual override control, with gear selection in M-mode performed either by the gear shift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts. M-mode offers a more sporting driving experience, with a lock-up function used from 2nd to 6th gears for as wide a range of gear ratios as possible.

6-speed Sports Direct Shift also incorporates an automatic, throttle ‘blipping’ function to optimise the speed and smoothness of downchanges. As with the Multidrive S transmission, drivers can also use the paddle shifts to temporarily override the automatic mode.

2.2 litre D-4D 180 diesel engineAlso equipped with Toyota’s D-CAT technology and mated to a six-speed manual transmission with the 4WD Integrated Active Drive System, the powerful 2.2 D-4D 180 unit develops 177 DIN hp/130 kW at 3600 rpm and 400Nm of torque at 2000-2800 rpm. Integrated Active Drive SystemThe RAV4 2010 is available with either 2WD front-wheel drive or Toyota’s advanced 4WD Integrated Active Drive System (IADS). IADS is a sophisticated, high-speed interactive management system which -via sensors located throughout the vehicle- integrates the RAV4’s Active Torque Control 4WD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems to enhance the RAV4’s performance, handling and safety.

The key element of IADS, the Active Torque Control 4WD system continuously monitors and controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in front of the rear differential, optimising traction and vehicle stability under all driving conditions.

Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 55:45, with front-wheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve fuel consumption. The system incorporates a 4WD Lock button, allowing the driver to lock torque distribution in a 55:45 ratio for maximum off-road traction.

IADS coordinates the operation of the Active Torque Control 4WD system with the RAV4’s VSC and EPS to not only control individual wheel speeds (as in a conventional VSC system), but also to adjust torque transfer between the front and rear wheels and add steering torque assistance to help the driver control a skid.

The unveiling of two customised iQ show cars at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show demonstrated that it is possible to combine the environmentally friendly credentials of sub-100 g/km vehicles with tremendous appeal and individuality.

Now in production, and on display for the first time at the 2010 Geneva motor show, the new iQ Collection features a choice of customised interiors, satisfying customer demand for enhanced interior quality and wider scope in the personalisation of their cars.This marks the start of an ongoing iQ Collection programme which will regularly update the model range with customisation offers reflecting the latest trends in style, colour and design.

In addition to the existing silver matt interior, the 2010 iQ Collection offers a choice of Cream or Gold finishes to the centre console, instrument cluster hood, and steering wheel and door panel inserts.

Complementing the new iQ Collection, a new Bronze Mica exterior colour is available, expanding customer choice in interior and exterior harmonisation.

Ergonomic enhancements have been made across the entire iQ model range. A height adjustable driver’s seat is now fitted as standard on iQ2 and iQ3 grades, and a new door handle has been fitted with an improved grip design for easier closing.

FT-86 Concept previews a New Generation of Sports Car

Toyota has a long and successful history of creating exciting, driver-focused sports cars such as the Celica, the MR2, the Supra and the Corolla Levin AE86.

With its reputation for delivering pure excitement and embodying the fundamental joy of driving, the Corolla Levin AE86 is the inspiration behind a new Toyota Sports Concept, the Future Toyota-86 concept.

The Corolla Levin AE86’s front engine, rear-wheel drive powertrain, compact dimensions, light weight, impeccable balance and superior power-to-weight ratio made it the must-have choice for rallying and circuit driving throughout its 1983-1987 production life. Even today, the AE86 is still a popular choice with private rallying teams.

Sharing its predecessor’s front engine, rear-wheel drive credentials, the FT-86 concept previews a new generation of sports car which perfectly recaptures the exciting spirit of the last Corolla Levin AE86.

An Entirely Driver-Oriented Concept

The FT-86 concept is an entirely driver-oriented concept, designed to give form to the intrinsic joy of driving through precise, instantaneous responses to even the smallest throttle or steering input.

A Shape Generated Through the Constraints of Aerodynamics and Function

The classic sports car form of the FT-86 concept has been generated entirely through the constraints of aerodynamics and function, a design concept that Toyota’s European Design Development centre -ED2- has dubbed ‘Functional Beauty’.

With a low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the engineering hard points, the FT-86 concept’s muscular, 4,160 mm bodywork has been made as compact as possible.

The concept features an entirely functional, ergonomically ideal cockpit, with the widespread use of sporting, ultra-lightweight components and finishes designed to further improve the FT-86 concept’s weight distribution and power-to-weight ratio.

Rather than regarding interior design as a stylised addition to the cabin framework, the FT-86 concept features a thin, simple, tight-fitting skin applied to the essential cockpit components, clearly visualised in the treatment of the dashboard and seat upholstery.

Although the reduction of CO2 emissions -identified as a significant cause of global warming- did not become a global issue until the 1990s, Toyota has been researching and developing environmentally-friendly mobility solutions for over 40 years in the quest for the ultimate eco-car.

Hybrid drive is not an alternative to petrol or diesel, but an addition, enhancing the efficiency of existing powertrains. As well as lowering fuel consumption, hybrid vehicles are particularly effective in the reduction of emissions. They produce cleaner emissions than conventional, diesel-powered vehicles and less CO2 and NOx than petrol-powered vehicles.

Named International Engine of the Year in 2004, Green Engine of the Year and Best Fuel Economy Engine of the Year for the fifth consecutive year in 2008, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® represents the ultimate synergy of high technology and environmentally-conscientious forward thinking in powertrain design.

Hybrid Synergy Drive® has been fundamental to the global success of the multiple-award winning Prius. A brilliant work in progress, three generations of the car -1997, 2004 and 2009- have seen significant improvements to successive evolutions of Toyota’s full hybrid drivetrain, with system power increasing by over 30%, yet fuel consumption and CO2 emissions falling by about 25%.

The Prius now returns combined cycle fuel consumption of 3.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of just 89 g - a figure unmatched by any family car.

Plug-in Hybrid technology

In recognition of the importance of energy diversification, Toyota’s Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHV) programme introduces a further development in environmentally-friendly urban mobility.

Despite the environmental merits of electric cars as urban commuters, their further development is currently handicapped by the weight and size of the batteries required to offer a satisfactory range, and the lack of an adequate recharging infrastructure.

Toyota has therefore determined that, in light of current battery development progress, plug-in hybrid drive is the most feasible short- to mid-term technological solution to the electrification of powertrains.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid represents a significant expansion of the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system’s capabilities. It is a full hybrid vehicle in which both the electric motor and petrol engine can drive the wheels. A fully electric, EV mode is employed for shorter journeys, while the hybrid powertrain’s petrol engine awards the Prius Plug-in Hybrid true long range capability.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid marks the introduction of lithium-ion batteries in a Toyota hybrid vehicle for two key reasons: Firstly, having superior volume energy density, they are more compact than their nickel-metal hydride counterparts, offering a significant increase in EV driving range with minimal adverse weight or packaging issues. Secondly, they may be recharged far more quickly than nickel-metal hydride alternatives. The battery pack of a Prius Plug-in Hybrid can be fully recharged in 1.5 hours from a standard, 230V household outlet.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s lithium-ion battery pack has about twice the capacity of the third generation Prius’ battery, giving the vehicle a maximum speed of 100 km/h when driven in EV mode. With battery fully charged, the Toyota PHV’s EV mode range has been increased to approximately 20 km.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid offers a 30% reduction in combined cycle fuel consumption over the Prius -2.6 l/100 km- and generates CO2 emissions of just 59 g/km.

The first 600 Prius Plug-in Hybrids are already participating in worldwide limited lease projects, with some 200 vehicles distributed throughout Europe. Driving use and charging behaviour will be assessed and analysed, and customer feedback addressed, with a view to verifying the new Toyota plug-in hybrid’s overall environmental and technological performance before it goes on sale.

Battery technology

A key element in hybrid technology is its battery; the durability and reliability of nickel-metal hydride perfectly suiting Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive®, and the superior volume energy density of lithium-ion offering improved EV range and high speed recharging for PHVs.

There is no doubt that battery technology has progressed significantly in the ten years since the introduction of Toyota’s full-electric RAV4 EV. Each successive generation of Prius has seen a reduction in battery pack size, weight and cost, yet improved efficiency.

However, challenges still remain. For instance, the cost of lithium-ion batteries needs to be reduced significantly, or a more affordable alternative found.

Fully committed to the most rapid possible advances in battery technology, the company established its own Battery Research Department in June 2008 and has been developing in-house battery technology since the early 1990s.

Toyota’s jointly-funded partnership with Panasonic EV Energy (PEVE) has also been a key element of its success in the advancement of hybrid technology. PEVE’s three production facilities in Japan will be producing 1.1 million battery packs per annum by September 2010.

70% of Europeans currently live in and around cities. And recent Toyota studies in urban commuting patterns in France and the UK reveal that over 80% of car journeys are less than 25 km in length. In France, 55% of journeys are less than 10 km, whilst in the UK that figure rises to approximately 80%.

The demand for short distance commuter vehicles is expected to increase in the coming years and, in this context, the future of electric vehicles in providing short- to mid-term sustainable mobility is assured.

Electricity has high potential as an alternative energy source to oil. It can be supplied easily, and produced from renewable sources such as solar, wind and hydro-electric power.

Toyota has already accumulated an unprecedented depth of knowledge and engineering capability in the field of electric vehicles. Ten years ago, some 1.500 RAV4 EV battery-electric vehicles were either sold or leased over the course of a three year, California-based test programme. Nearly half of these 160 km-driving range, large battery vehicles are still on the road.

However, even with a 160 km range, EVs as a primary mode of transportation do not offer what most customers see as true mobility- and the absence of a comprehensive recharging infrastructure continues to hinder market acceptance of the battery electric concept.

Nonetheless, through further advances in battery technology, and cooperation with governments, related organisations and other companies in charging infrastructure development, Toyota believes these obstacles will be overcome.

To that end, Toyota has continued with the development of short range EVs for commercialisation. At last year’s Tokyo Motorshow, the company unveiled its FT-EVII concept, a small commuter EV with a top-speed of 100 km/h and a driving range of over 90 km. Toyota plans to launch a lithium-ion battery equipped EV in the United States in 2012.

Fuel Cell technology

Fuel cell vehicles have the potential not only to solve environmental and energy problems, but also to change the shape and structure of motor vehicles themselves.

Fuel cell car design is liberated from the constraints imposed on conventional vehicles by the need to mechanically transmit energy from the engine to the wheels, creating unprecedented freedom in designing the structure of the car’s interior.

Producing electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen (stored in the vehicle) and oxygen (from the air), with water vapour the only emission, a fuel cell structure comprises electrodes and polyelectrolyte films sandwiched between separators. When hundreds of cells are stacked together, the result is a fuel cell ‘stack’, known as an FC stack.

A fuel cell can convert as much as 80% of hydrogen’s energy into usable power - about twice the efficiency possible with current generation petrol engines.

Toyota began work on FCHVs in 1992, developing its own hydrogen fuel cells and high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks in house. The company applies its own HSD technology to FCHV development, replacing petrol engines with fuel cells, and petrol fuel compartments with high pressure hydrogen tanks. The Toyota FC stack is a performance leader in fuel cell technology.

The world’s first production fuel cell vehicle, the Toyota FCHV, was commercialised in 2002. Toyota’s latest fuel cell hybrid, the FCHV-adv -featuring a newly designed, high-performance Toyota FC Stack fuel cell and high pressure tanks- received vehicle-type certification from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on June 3rd 2008.

The Toyota FCHV-adv offers a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency and, through the use of Toyota-developed, 70Mpa high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks, has a single-fill-up cruising range of approximately 830 km -more than twice the cruising range of its predecessor. Furthermore, the Toyota FCHV-adv can operate in –30°C, greatly improving its cold weather performance.

Though a fuel cell vehicle emits no CO2 itself, the CO2 emissions resulting from various hydrogen production methods must be considered for an accurate, well-to-wheel appraisal of FCHV energy efficiency and environmental impact.

Moreover, a smooth shift to a hydrogen-based society will be a significant undertaking. Reaching a consensus on from what to make hydrogen, how to deliver it and how to implement a fuelling infrastructure depends on the combined efforts of all sectors of society, including governments.

To that end -and in anticipation of the imminent commercialisation of a number of FCHVs- Toyota, Ford, Daimler, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai/Kia and Renault/Nissan signed a Letter of Understanding in September 2009 calling for oil and energy companies and government organisations to cooperate in the creation of hydrogen infrastructure networks of sufficient density in Europe, Japan, Korea and the United States by 2015.
