T he Spring Show is now behind us, and the season is really beginning to change. We’ll try again this month to present a program that was posponed back in March. It involves orchids inside enclosures, even though our thoughts may have not-so-subtlety shifted to the greening-up world outside. This is also the month that our club dues are due - please use the form inside the back page of this newsletter, and bring your payment to the May meeting. I f you attended Jim Marlow’s open house in September, you may may remember the exhibition and sale of vivarium items for sale by Eric Warren as SaurianArts. (Wikipedia: “A vivarium is an area, usually enclosed, for keeping and raising animals or plants for observa- tion or research. Often, a portion of the ecosystem for a particular species is simulated on a smaller scale, with controls for environ- mental conditions.”) Located in Rochester, NY, SaurianArts pro- duces beautiful original art in various media ranging from graphite to Prismacolor, ink to charcoal and pastel. The company also designs custom, zoo-quality terraria and vivaria. Eric works with natural mate- rials to create naturalistic habitats and terraria for the plant and herpe- tological hobbies. He has used containers ranging from large size fish tanks to small glass globe terraria. E ric will demonstrate how we can make our own terrariums and vivariums in which we can grow our orchids - and perhaps will have a live animal along for us to enjoy. Eric is on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Saurian- Arts/224704017678106. He will be selling items related to his presentation, so there will be no member sales permitted at this month’s meeting. We will be taking Eric to dinner on the meeting night, 5 p.m., at Aja Noodle, 2602 Elmwood Avenue, (near 12 Corners.) Meeting Minutes for Apr. 7, 2014

Carol Butcher led tonight’s beginners meeting. (There were a lot of new mem-bers that joined at the show, and were first time attenders.) We discussed the Show. Carol answered questions about what judges were looking for, how they scored plants and exhibits, and gave us an insight on how the judging process works. Several members par-ticipated by clerking for the show, and shared info about what they were doing, and how the process worked. Carol then discussed culture for different plants that were available for sale at the show.

Bill Renick opened tonight’s regular meet-ing by talking about the show, as well. This year’s show was a big risk with a change of location! He began by thanking Dave Weiss and Fran Murphy for handling the layout and communication with the vendors. Diane Bernard stepped up, and worked very hard on all the behind the scene details - prompt-ing and reminding and then following through with of lots of details that really needed to be dealt with!

Hopefully you saw Saturday’s article in the D&C with Bill and Stephen Laifer. (Even though the paper altered some comments!)Bill thanked Jackie K.**** for jump starting the media advertising. There were ads on 3 TV stations, on the Michael Warren Thomas radio show, as well as on radio station 101 with Tony. We purchased 6 - 30 second slots which turned into 5 days. of advertising both morning and afternoon.

He thanked Maryann O’Mara for the floor set up. Carol Butcher and Jeanne Kaeding for organizing both the judging, and registra-tion. They used a different system for it, and it seemed to move pretty smoothly, with no complaints.

Sue Hill and Mike DeVito worked hard on coordinating the members sales table, as well as scheduling members to man it. (Saturday afternoon they had blown through the day’s plants, and were well into selling Sunday’s too.) That should give you an idea of how well the vendors did for the weekend.

Bill thanked Yolanda Johnson (MCC’s Event Coordinator) for all her hard work. Saturday’s attendance was 586! (last years was 519 on Sat.) Sunday’s numbers were down, while the sunshine was up! (This year’s show atten-dance was only 3% lower than last years.) Not bad for a new location - which led to Len Bayer’s comments.

Bill thanked Len and Lori Bayer for their hard work with the admissions table. Len then talked about how every year we try to discuss, trouble shoot, and come up with ideas on what we have to do to bring up Sunday’s numbers. He mentioned that signage was the same both days, the location was the same both days etc.

He then thought to call the Seneca Park Zoo, and ask about their attendance numbers for the weekend. The zoo had 183 paid admit-tance on Saturday. (Remember the wind and snowflakes!) Sunday when the sun appeared, the attendance was 2,593! Hmmmm... Sunshine arrived in Rochester!

In the end, so far we are approximately $500.00 off from what we expected. We had 3 fewer vendors this year. We charged the vendors the same this year for linear foot for tables. Carol Butcher mentioned that the judges had good compliments about both the new location, and how the show went. This years vendors all seemed to have a wondefuland successful show.

Bill mentioned that we need someone to step up and volunteer to head the June GROS Picnic. Any takers?

Diane Bernard mentioned that she’s hoping to coordinate a trip up to Claudio’s this sum-mer. If your interested, contact her at:

A member mentioned officer elections for next month. The proposed slate of officers is:

• President: Bill Renick

• Exec. VP : to be determined

• Treasurer: Sue Hill

• Secretary: JoAnn ********

• Program VP: Noel Krzesinski

Member at Large will be presented at next month’s meeting. Elections will be held dur-ing the May meeting.

Besides tonight being Claudio’s birth-day, he presented a wonderful talk/journey on: Brassavola nodosa and it’s Hybrids by Cloud’s Orchids. The raffle table was loaded, and scooped up. The meeting ended.

In Memoriam:Joe Buggie

Joe and Cathy were great friends of ours, never more so than in their orchid grow-ing days. Cathy was the orchid enthusi-ast, with Joe a somewhat reluctant part-ner. Even though he wasn’t the grower, he tackled any orchid problems with great enthusiasm as was his general approach to life. Joe and Cathy were our exhibition part-ners at the annual GROS show for more years than I can count. As we both had small, hobby greenhouses, it took bloom-ers from both our complementary collec-tions to fill one exhibit. On setup day, Joe and I handled the mechanical work of setting up the table and positioning the lights, whilst Lorri and Cathy did the artistic work of positioning the plants and staging the exhibit. Ribbons or not, we always had a fun time. The Buggies were always happy to help us out hosting the admissions and mem-bership tables, and walking the floor. In spite of knowing little about orchid culture, Joe would always wear an “Ask me about Orchids” ribbon. As Cathy grew a lot of Vandas, one day he crossed out “Orchids” and wrote in “Vandas.” If someone dared to ask him about Vanda culture, he would reply that all it took for good blooming was the generous use of “Vanda Dust,” origin unknown. Although age related health issues forced them to shut down their greenhouse sev-eral years ago, their orchid stories kept us all entertained for many years after. We miss you already, Joe.

- Len and Lori Bayer
