January, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians:

I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope that the winter break was restful and rejuvenating.

We are beginning a new calendar year, 2016. The New Year is always a time to reflect on accomplishments and set goals for

the year ahead. The staff at General Wolfe encourages and provides opportunities for our students to reflect and set goals on an

on-going basis. We know that reflection and goal setting are key ingredients to success. Students who are actively involved in

their learning reach greater success when they feel they have control over their learning and understand why it is im-

portant. We encourage you to be part of the process as well. You can be involved with your child by asking three simple ques-

tions:

What are you learning? Why are you learning this? How will you know when you have succeeded?

All of our students were involved with the Tell Them From Me Survey. This is a national survey that asks students to share

how they feel about a variety of topics related to school. Students responded to a series of questions regarding the effective use

of classroom time in three subject areas: language arts, mathematics, and science. The students responded to the following

questions:

•Teachers are good at explaining difficult ideas.

•Teachers use our class time to help us learn.

•Class lessons are well organized.

•Teachers help us understand important ideas.

•Important ideas are taught well.

•Responses to students' questions are clear.

We are very proud that 80% of our students feel that their learning time at General Wolfe is Effective which is well above the

National average. Our goal is to have 100% of our students feel that their learning time at General Wolfe is effective; as a staff

we will continue to work on strategies to reach this goal.

Parent council meets once a month and we would encourage you to join us. This month our meeting is on January 13th at 5:30

p.m. We serve a light meal and then conduct our Parent Council meeting. We are also providing parent information sessions.

This month we will be doing a session on Mindfulness. Mindfulness is a practice that helps to reduce stress and anxiety.

Please join us; the session will follow our regular Parent Council Meeting.

Our Parent Council will also be selling tickets for a Fund Raising event at Rumor’s Comedy Club on Feb. 6 th. An order form

for tickets was sent home earlier in the week. If you wish to purchase you can also stop into the school office.

pleng katanungan:

Ano ang iyong natutunan? Bakit mo ito pinagaaralan? Papaano mo malalaman kung tagumpay ka na?

Lahat ng ating estudyante ay kasali sa Tell Them From Me Survey.

at science.

kaming parent information sessions.

May

Green Team News In November 2015, Ms. Leonard and the Green Team registered our garden project with the Roots & Shoots organization started by Dr. Jane Goodall. Roots & Shoots is active in over 130 countries worldwide and prepares youth to design and implement sustainability action projects that will transform their community into a place were people, animals and the environment thrive. Our school’s project was one of 35 proposals received from across Canada, and we have just been informed that our project was selected to receive a grant of $500.00! Selection of Roots & Shoots Grant recipients was made on the basis of the following criteria:

Demonstrated alignment with the goals and values of Roots & Shoots Canada, including:

Youth-led; will build confidence in youth that their voice is valued

Considers the interconnectedness of people, animals and the environment and how the project will benefit all three

Hands-on action and meaningful learning that will help us grow a generation of Janes

Honours Indigenous ways of knowing

Demographic diversity

Regional diversity

Reach

Uniqueness/innovativeness

Demonstrated feasibility Congratulations, Ms. Leonard and the Green Team!!
