I – Welcome Statement:The Department of Forensic Medicine and Clinical toxicology welcomes you to the (Diploma degree in Biochemical Laboratories of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology). As a department we are committed to medical student education and continuously strive to improve your educational experience. This handbook presents information guide and log book activity of the (Diploma degree in Biochemical Laboratories of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology) administered by the Forensic Medicine and Clinical toxicology department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University.

II - Mission Statement:The mission of the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University is

• The preparation of a competent graduate, who is able to compete on both national and regional levels, capable of life long learning, training and tutoring, while adhering to the codes of practice of medical health services and ethics.

• The college as well, seeks continuous development of programs and courses. It also enhances expansion of applied scientific research and health programs for community services and environmental development.

This programme aims to provide graduates with the requisite multi-disciplinary knowledge, skills and comptences to be able to work effectively as analysts and to produce high quality problem-solving graduates, skilled in the measurement principles and techniques employed in Forensic and Pharmaceutical Analysis. Graduates can pursue careers in Forensic, Pharmaceutical or Analytical Science, such as in: public analyst laboratories, forensic science laboratories, local authorities, environmental and health agencies; the pharmaceutical industry, private analyst laboratories. The programme will provide graduates the basics of forensic & scientific practices, basics of physics and chemistry applied in analytical procedures, the types of laws and their application in forensic laboratories and in medico-legal practice, define essential medico legal requests of courts, develop skills in applying the basics of medical ethics, expresses competency in dealing with different medico-legal aspects of legal claims and medical errors, demonstrates essential practical skills in interpreting analytical results and to expresses personal attribute of compassion, honesty, and integrity in relationships with different forensic sciences specialties, colleagues, courts and the medical profession.

To give participants the confidence and skills to apply basic principles of forensic medicine laboratory analyses in different contexts.

To encourage the acquisition of general scientific skills relating to analytical techniques and procedures used in investigating the cause and mechanism of death in suspected criminal cases.

To train participants on how to do critical analysis of medicolegal findings, interpretation and reporting of information and data of legal significance.

To offer a fresh and stimulating approach to the major legal laws in connection with forensic and toxicology laboratories practices, ethical and human right principles that govern the medico-legal approaches, malpractice claims and common medical errors.

1. Understand differences between moral and legal responsibilities of physicians and surgeons.

2. List Legal considerations of forensic and toxicology laboratories practices.

3. Discriminate between civil and criminal laws and their relations with laboratory practice.

4. Define articles of civil and criminal laws that are applied on situations in legal practices.

1-Course Aims:

The aims of this course are to enable students to:

1. Understand the medico-legal considerations adopted in handling of poisoning cases.

2. List types of poisons used to facilitate robbery.

3. Identify the medico-legal concerns implemented in suspected drug use in sports.

4. Apply articles of civil and criminal laws on situations of poisoning suits.

5. Determine elements of medical malpractice and cause of death in poisoning lawsuit.

6. Define drug abuse, their legal definition, types and the yardstick of assessments.

7. Recognize toxicologic disasters and methods of investigation and sampling..

8. Detect discripances between clinical diagnosis of poisoning, laboratory results, pathologic findings and autopsy findings in unexplained cause of poisoning deaths.

1 – Monitoring Of Training and Submission Of Training Reports

You must keep proper and updated records in your logbook to reflect the activities encountered in your training. Your logbook must be duly endorsed by an authorized signatory at the end of each semester.

You will be continuously assessed by your supervisors, in consultation with head of department. An assessment will be submitted within 2 weeks of completion of each semester.

2 - Miscellaneous Information:

Injury and/or Blood or Body Fluid Exposure: During regular working hours, you should immediately report an exposure incident to --------------------------.
