Musical Feature 1: Syncopated Rhythm

Description: The rhythm of jazz music is syncopated or off-

beat. This can be heard in The Entertainer by Scott Joplin. It

is a piano piece. The left hand plays a steady rhythm, while the

right hand plays off the beat. This piano style is known as

Ragtime a type of Jazz music, and Scott Joplin made itpopular.

Musical Feature 2: Scat Singing

Description:Scat singing is where the singer uses nonsense

words to mimic the sound of the instruments. This can be

heard in One Note Sambaby Ella Fitzgerald. We watched thison You Tube in class and found it very interesting.

Musical Feature 3: Improvisation

Description: Improvisation is when the performer

spontaneously varies a tune. Not all jazz musicians could read

music. They would improvise on tunes using a set chord

pattern. The twelve bar blues is a harmonic chord progression

that performers used to improvise on.
