AuSTRALIA’S PREmIER PRImARy HEALTHCARE CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION

Dear General Practitioner,

on behalf of Reed medical Education, it gives me great pleasure inviting you to join us at the 2013 Brisbane General practitioner Conference & Exhibition (GpCE) from Friday 20 September to Sunday 22 September 2013. the Brisbane GpCE will run in conjunction with the practice Nurse Clinical Education (pNCE) Conference.

the General practitioner Conference & Exhibition is widely recognised as Australia’s premier primary health care event. the Brisbane scientific program offers a wide choice across a range of topics, seminars and hands-on workshops, allowing delegates to obtain category 1 and 2 QI&CpD points. In addition, the exhibition floor offers delegates the opportunity to interact with suppliers and pharmaceutical companies where they can see the latest medical products and technologies on offer.

the GpCE provides delegates with valuable face-to-face learning opportunities with fellow Gps, assisting you in obtaining interactive education and mandatory CpD points. please remember that 2013 is the final year of the GP Triennium, so this is the perfect chance for you to earn your last points for the year. It is also an invaluable opportunity to network with Australia’s leading healthcare educators and suppliers.

Additionally, there are a number of special events available for our delegates to attend, including the ALm dinner on Diabetes management. there will also be a social drinks reception, bringing together sponsors, educators, exhibitors and delegates, which I encourage you to attend.

Demand for places at the 2013 Brisbane GpCE is high, so I urge you to register at your earliest convenience in order to attend the sessions of your choice.

I look forward to welcoming you to the 2013 edition of the GpCE Brisbane.

Kind regards,

Brandon Ward Director Reed Medical Education

s2A Using the kidneys to Manage Hyperglycaemia – An Introduction to the sGLT2 InhibitorsThis session aims to educate clinicians about a new class of type 2 diabetes therapy which has been shown to be as effective as SUL and MET at lowering HbA1c but with a low risk of hypoglycaemia and the additional benefit of weight loss. Amongst other things, GPs will learn about the common and uncommon adverse event profile of the SGLT2 inhibitors, the correct patient in whom to prescribe this new class as well as the appropriate monitoring and follow up that is required. Clinicians who attend this session will be well positioned to prescribe this new class of T2DM therapy responsibly.

s3A surgical Advancements in Hip and knee Replacements for Better Patient Outcomes including Anterior Minimally Invasive surgeryTotal Hip & knee Arthroplasty procedures are some of the most successful operations of the 21st century. In total knee arthroplasty ‘Patient Specific Approaches’ have been recently introduced as part of the surgical process. Preoperative imaging is used to manufacture bone cutting blocks specific to a patient’s anatomy. Proposed benefits of patient matched-technology include a decrease in operation time, instrument trays required and the ability to pre-operatively plan a patients implant size, position and alignment more precisely. The ‘Anterior Approach’ for Total Hip Arthroplasty utilises an intermuscular and internervous plane which respects the patient’s anatomy and vital structures. No muscles are cut resulting in a faster recovery with no post-operative restrictions. Medacta Australia

s4A Child supplements - sorting facts from fictionChild Supplementation is a therapeutic area which is growing in importance, and is one where General Practitioners must have up to date knowledge to guide patients. The children’s range of products has exploded over the last few years, with ingredients ranging from Fish Oil to Vitamin C all attracting special formulas. This session will address what is most important when recommending supplements for children, including recommended dietary intakes, absorption and degradation of ingredients and common mistakes one makes in selecting the right supplement.Melanie McGrice Aspen Pharma

s9A Dietary Cholesterol and its Link to Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)Simple, straightforward dietary advice has the potential to help lower LDL and total serum cholesterol in at risk patients, therefore reducing their risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Numerous studies have investigated the effects of dietary cholesterol on serum cholesterol levels. The findings have shown that dietary cholesterol has little effect on blood cholesterol and diets high in saturated fat have a greater impact on blood cholesterol levels and associated health risks than dietary cholesterol. This seminar will present the latest information on dietary strategies to lower blood cholesterol levels. A/Prof Karam Kostner Egg Nutrition Council

s10A The GP’s Recipe for Concussion Management – Quick and EasyConcussion in sport is a serious public health issue. 2-3 athletes in a contact / collision sports team have concussion in a season, 90% of these occur in matches. If athletes choose to play sport, ignoring concussion symptoms, there is a risk of them dying suddenly on the field or having long term problems at work or school. In a study investigating community rugby players with concussion in Sydney, 78% did not receive return to play advice after concussion. All those who received the correct advice failed to comply (Hollis BJSM 2011). GP’s have a duty of care to manage athletes with concussion according to the new Zurich Concussion Guidelines. The transfer of concussion information to the under resourced sports community requires energy and dedicated commitment by GP’s & private sector initiatives. Attend this seminar to be confident in any concussion situation by understanding: the minimum diagnostic criteria for concussion; what to do with suspected concussion; sideline & office concussion assessment tools; rehabilitation approaches; concussion risk reduction and effective information transfer.Dr Ryan Kohler Presented by Herron Sports Concussion

s13A Osteoarthritis of the Hip – surgical Treatment Options for Better Patient Outcomes including Anterior Minimally Invasive surgeryTotal Hip Arthroplasty is one of the most successful operations of the 21st century. Traditionally a total hip replacement would be performed through either a posterior or anterolateral approach. These approaches require the splitting of muscles which are essential for hip stabilisation. The Anterior Approach for Total Hip Arthroplasty utilises an intermuscular and internervous plane which respects the patient’s anatomy and vital structures. No muscles are cut resulting in a faster recovery with no post operative restrictions. Medacta Australia

s14A Macular Degeneration – Nutritional Medicine for Early InterventionsThe Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), involving over 4000 participants has been recently released. wM Management of Medical Emergencies in the General Practice“Good emergency medicine is 10% clinical skill and 90% good logistics”Successful management of an unexpected medical emergency in your practice demands a quick and well co-ordinated response by the practitioner and the whole support team. To obtain the best outcome requires a range of skills, knowledge, equipment and a system that everyone understands. This professional training course not only provides clinical skills and knowledge but provides the systems and processes needed for the practice team to provide a high level of care to the stricken patient. This course outlines the science underpinning current resuscitation practices before being introduced to the risk assessment approach which underpins the treatment algorithms that have been developed to manage the emergency. Based upon these algorithms, simple and easy to use equipment to enable the practitioner and the team to manage airway, breathing and circulation will be identified. Techniques taught include team CPR, defibrillation, the use of laryngeal mask airways, monitoring of SpO2 and CO2, use of first line medications and packaging of the trauma victim.Participants will be broken into groups where our paramedics will step them through the equipment and protocols giving consolidation of skills and techniques required to manage a serious medical emergency to the highest possible level. Practical scenarios will bring the logistics and processes of managing a serious medical emergency to life.Delegates attending this ALM will complete the required CPR module required as part of the 2011 – 2013 RACGP QI&CPD program.
