ABOUT GP Throughout my years of teaching General Paper (GP), I have come

to appreciate the deep importance of this subject in formulating one’s thinking and values. In fact, if approached correctly, I believe that GP can be a powerful platform for many purposes: to learn how to think critically, to evaluate arguments, to appreciate differing perspectives, to know more about the world around us, and to engage both our minds and hearts.

MY SOCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS

One year after Irwin’s Study was established, MENDAKI approached me to partner them in their ‘A’-Level Tuition Subsidy Scheme for students who come from lower-income families. I was most glad to help out and have since personally taught GP and also provided JC tuition through my other tutors for many students on this scheme. In 2012, The New Paper learnt about this and wrote a feature story.

MY LIFE PHILOSOPHY

One of the quotes that have continuously guided me in my teaching is by the poet W.B. Yeats who said that, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Indeed, for a content-rich subject such as General Paper (GP), it’s easy to focus only on imparting head knowledge and content material. But I believe that it is much more crucial – and efficacious – to touch the hearts of the students, so that they naturally grow towards loving and appreciating the subject. In fact, a memorable incident was when one of my ex-students messaged me to say that before attending my GP lessons, she didn’t like to read the newspapers at all, but after coming for GP tuition, she now automatically desires to pick up the newspapers to read and find out about current affairs and social issues.
