General Notions

The phthalic anhydride is an organic substance commonly used for the protection of amine groups. It’s

also a starting reagent for the luminol’s synthesis.

Methodology

First of all handle the diethylhexylphthate

(C6H4(CO2)2[CH3CHCH2 (CH2)4]) with isopropanol that contains

sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 10%. Then extract the sodiumftalate in H2O

separating from isopropanol (CH3-CHOH-CH3) in separating

funnel.

Add concentrate Hydrocloric acid (HCl) in the solution and put it in ice and salt so you

can get a precipitate of ftalic acid.

Ftalic acid

After filtering the precipitate, heat it at 300°C in an enhancer dehydrating the acid and

sublimating the anhydride.
