Illinois was well represented:
1. Great Lakes District VPG Dick and Cheryl Chamblin
2. ILSSAR President Tom and Linda Ashby
3. ILSSAR Sr. VP Toby and Sue Chamberlain
4. ILSSAR Trustee John Dyrud
5. ILSSAR Chaplain Dave Ashbrook
6. J. Gordon Bidner, Pres. General Joseph Bartholomew SAR Chapter
7. Dr. Allan Campbell, Captain Zeally Moss SAR Chapter
Here is a ‘short report’.
1. SAR 1,000 Recognition Breakfast Feb. 27th—Dr. Allan Campbell was awarded the ‘Signer
Level Recognition’ pin for a contribution between $1,776 and $5,327 AND Sue Chamberlain became a George Washington Fellow as did Gary R. List.---congratulations Allan, Sue and Gary---AND thank you!
2. The ‘Solid Light Proposal’---was discussed at length at the ExCom meeting on Feb. 25th and
then again on Saturday morning. Fourteen state societies sent Resolutions to the NSSAR Leadership with eight in favor of the Solid light Proposal and six expressing opposition to the proposal. During the ExCom meeting Bill Stone (AL), Chair of the Solid Light Committee, Da-vid Billings (AL), Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, David Boring (MI) and Randy Ellis (OK) Chair of the Budget Committee and Sam Powell (NC), SAR Foundation President all made presentations regarding the ‘Proposed Center Exhibit Hall/Museum’. These same presentations were then made again on Saturday morning—at the trustee’s meeting-- along with a video provided by the Solid Light folks and a presentation by the Solid Light Project manager. The floor was then opened for questions and comments before breaking for lunch and additional comments, a motion and a ballot vote. The first motion was to pay the balance of the $549,000 bill for ‘The Plan’ which passed with but one dissent. Then another motion was made to proceed with the Solid Light Interactive Museum Plan and start a Capital Cam-paign for $10 million dollars to fund the project. The project is tentatively not to start until the money is raised and or pledges received. The Trustees earlier were advised that the Muse-um Board recommended two alternatives a $5 million dollar project or a $7.5 million dollar project with the Museum Board in support of the $7.5 dollar project. Why the $10 million? Two reasons 1) it fits within the ‘1776 Campaign’ 2) It will take some time to attain this goal and costs and technology will likely increase and change. The roof top garden and the base-ment ‘video’ were not included in the proposed motion OR discussion. From 2000 to 2007 the NSSAR has raised $4,265,387 and from 2008---2015 $7,300,330 has been raised at an average of $912,541 per year. Twenty two percent or approximately 7,500 of the SAR mem-bers contributed an average of $296/member over these last 15 years. So, it appears it will take 5-7 years at best to raise the $10 million. Remembering that NSSAR has a debt pres-ently of $1,238,715.47 for the headquarters buildout. The total ‘net assets’ for year end 2015 is $8,010,027.80.
3. The vote was 44 Yea’s and 29 No’s. ---73 voted---trustees, VPG’s, General NSSAR Officers and 8 PPG’s— 60.3% in favor and 39.7% against the motion. I guess the thing that bothered me most was twofold: 1) The ‘major press’ that was made and the attempt to provide infor-
Apr 2016 The General’s News Pg 5
mation that wasn’t previously available to members to pass the issue including the ‘PPG Sympson Letter’, the ‘financials’ from Billings, Boring and Ellis and the Powell Fund Raising Report. 2) When the vote was announced a loud YEA from those in favor of the motion---I could understand an applause, but not the loud voices. Why, it further substantiated the fact that this was more about winning and face saving than it was about doing what is best for the SAR or at least seriously considering the objections and concerns raised. If I were in NSSAR leadership I would be MOST concerned about the 40% that feel both ignored, disen-franchised and being seen as some have said as ‘naysayers’! I promise all of you reading this summary that the 40% love the SAR as much as the 60% and most im-portantly want the NSSAR to remain solvent and committed to its members and purpose.
4. SAR Branding Report by Rick Hollis was made to the ExCom members and accepted with thanks.
I think I have attended 10 NSSAR Leadership meetings since 2008 ---when I became ILSSAR Presi-dent, then Trustee and then a VPG. The meetings are most generally interesting and informative and over the years I have made several good friends and acquaintances. It also seems that most often there is an issue(s) in a political sense and under currents. It also seems that there is a con-stant battle by past NSSAR leadership to remain in control of the direction of the SAR. The one thing that came out of this--- that was most positive--- is that concerns were raised about the ‘Solid Light Plan’ and many ‘Rank and File Members’ expressed their concerns and they had a voice and a hearing of sorts. The major concern expressed by many was the lack of a good ‘marketing/evaluation’ of the project along with reasonable projections of attendance and revenue versus ex-penses. The expectations is for a positive revenue stream for the ‘Education Outreach Interpretive Center’ of around $200-300,000 per year with an average yearly attendance of around 65,000.
Lastly, IT (Information Technology) Chair Bill Marrs (TX) gave his report on the updating of the web site, SAR Data System Development and Mike Scroggins on digitizing some 2.2 million pages of ap-plications and supporting documents as they head toward a Genealogical Research System similar to the DAR. The good news is IT is being worked on and budgeted for as funds are available.
I will stop here and not report on the several committee meetings I also attended. I would be pleased to answer any questions this email might raise--- and if any of the ILSSAR attendees feel I have er-rored or misspoken in any way in this abbreviated report please feel free to make your comments.
In SAR Service, Gordon

By Descent From
Uriah Hanks
Uriah Hanks was born May 4, 1736 in Sagaisle Island, Massachusetts. He was the sixth of ten chil-dren born of Benjamin Hanks, Jr. (1702-1787) and Mary White (1704-1772). Uriah married Irene Case (born on March 20, 1735) in Mansfield, Connecticut. Uriah died on July 4, 1809 and Irene on August 7, 1807. They both died in Mansfield, Connecticut and are buried in Old Storrs Cemetery.
Uriah Hanks was an inventor and a prominent gun maker from Connecticut who manufactured gun locks for the Colonial troops. In the Colonial Records of Connecticut, it stated that “Uriah Hanks made valuable locks in Mansfield in 1775-1776.” American Gun Makers published that Uriah was a gun maker for the Committee of Safety where from June 10, 1776, he made 87 double-bridled locks and from April 1777, he made 15 gun-locks.
In addition, when it was impossible to get knitting needles during the Revolution, and when farmers could not ring their hogs and anglers could not fish, Uriah constructed a wire-drawing apparatus which drew out wire by horsepower, the first wire-drawing machine in America.
Uriah and Irene had ten children. One of their sons, Colonel Benjamin Hanks (1755-1824) was a clock maker and established a foundry that cast the first bells and bronze cannons made in America. Benjamin served in the second company of General Israel Putnam’s Third Connecticut Regiment as a drummer from May 8 to December 10, 1775. He marched from Manfield, Connecticut for the relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm.
Uriah’s grandfather, Benjamin Hanks, Sr., arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1699 coming from London. In Representative Women in New England published in 1904, it states that Benjamin Hanks, Sr. is the great grandfather of Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States.
