Unit Description

The Unit Instituto de Psicologia Cognitiva, Desenvolvimento Vocacional e Social (IPCDVS) was organized during 2007 around four main entities: a

Scientific Coordinator; an Executive Board representing the Research Groups; a Scientific Board and a Board of External Advisors constituted by nine

international specialists coming from Europe and USA. At the end of 2007, we could count with 67 investigators, 44 of which have the PhD level. All the

activities were performed according to the annual plan of action along with a correspondent budget and respecting the Unit by

approved internal regulations, adequate to the organization of the 8 existing research lines. In 2007, the activities previously developed

MEDVOC and PSYTREND (2003-2006 period) were carried on, although with a more specialized emphasis: while research groups

the Unit we tried to make convergences between fundamental and applied research.

General Objectives

The reorganization of the Research Unit for 2011-2012 will follow the next steps: 1. The main research question is: “independently of the psychological

domain, in what concerns human development, and in the perspective of the mind-behavior dialogue applied to well-being, is it possible to trace

commonalities considering psychological processes?” 2. The big challenge to this enterprise is the huge diversity in human behavior, contexts of

development and settings of intervention; so, the “big research idea” will set up in the

cross findings that are expected to happen, and subsequently in our ability to set up dialogues over diversity, towards epistemological, methodological

and conceptual unity. 3. These issues are so ancient as psychology itself, but now having empirical/experimental power, clinical evidence and

techniques of establishing ecological validity, it is possible a new look to found in psychology, as a real interdisciplinary strength. 4. Integration of

methods will lead to more critical assets, having a scientific agenda where each of the research groups have to hypothesize locally in its domains, but

also confronting with the data of the others. 5. The fundamental operational idea in this Strategic Project is “dialogue”, using tested consensus

methods. 6. The state of the art within our Project is expected to evolve in a more holistic and comprehensive approach of human development, more

heuristic centered, and less Cartesian. 7. Finally, we expect to share common knowledge between the research groups, empowering our methods of

intervention, and grounding new stages of scientific research.

Activities

Integrative/multidisciplinary activities during the year of 2011

During the year of 2011, the members of the Board met for several times, discussing the interfaces and synergies between the research groups. A

general convention will take place at the end of 2012, with the purpose of sharing within the scientific community, and “end-users

findings reached at the Strategic Project. In several activities, members from the different research groups cross-signed research tasks, presentations,

and publications.

Outreach activities during the year of 2011

In 2011, the Unit had a particular concern with the contact with the media. The permanent linkage with the Instituto de Investigação Interdisciplinar

(Institute of Interdisciplinary Research) of the University of Coimbra, establhished by our presence in the Scientific Council, made possible our

regarding the community. As a highlight of our close relation with the society, integrated within the Research group – Psychosocial

means of a protocol with a Union, a counseling facility for unemployed persons was successfully launched.

Objectives & Achievements

Objectives

This research group main focus is on lifelong career/life design and management, using a cognitive dynamic approach. Recent literature on both academic and career development has highlighted the need for a comprehensive theory that is capable of identifying robust patterns of motivational functioning (processes and factors) in achievement contexts promoting life-span learning and career management. All these perspectives can be integrated in the encompassing ongoing conceptual approach of competence motivation propounded by Elliot & Dweck (2005) and several others. Thus, this research groupt aims to develop and validate an original research model devised to understand how dispositional, contextual andbehavioral determinants interact in order to explain the different aspects of the main decision-making processes and their implications for academic and career development during the life path. Grounded on well validated motivational, career and cognitive approaches, such as SocialCareer Theory (SCCT), Future Time Perspective Theory (FTP), Self-Determination Theory (SDT), and Information-ProcessingPerspectives, this RG builds on the synergies among the above mentioned theories. Derived from the above mentioned theoreticalwe expect the following outcomes: 1) Increase the theoretical, methodological and intervention competencies via the completion of several articulated research projects related to the advanced training of junior researchers, in the following specific areas: a) testing the impact of several domainself-efficacy constructs (career decision self-efficacy, mathematics self-efficacy) in two achievement outcomes, namely mathematics performance and career decision-making difficulties in secondary education students; b) testing the contextual stability of time perspective (TP) and FTP constructs inseveral life dimensions and roles; c) exploring the interactions of several SDT, FTP and goal orientation theoretical propositions inacademic areas in secondary education students; d) testing an integrative model (encompassing several SCCT and SDT theoretical paths)domain specific and general Psychological and Subjective Well-being (PWB & SWB) in higher education students; e) looking atand other family factors on learning and vocational aspirations, choices and goals; f) highlighting the interconnections between cognitive functioning (e.g., memory, problem solving, reading), in several age groups, and personal adaptation to contextual demands. Within the period several PhD and Master thesis will be completed. 2) Internationalization will be incremented via the deepening of the already existing networks and the start of new ones, namely with scholars of USA and South America (Peru and Costa Rica). 3) Traditional dissemination procedures will be extensively used by the RG.The team expects to publish articles in peer reviewed journals, both international and national books , book chapters, and papers in scientific proceedings of both national and international meetings.

Organization of conferences

Organisation of the "First International Conference on Time Perspective" (University of Coimbra, 5-8 September, 2012).

Website: www.tpconference2012.com

Since the beginning of Psychology, time has been a central subject of study. Nowadays, one of the fields with the greatest potential for a better understanding of cognitions and behaviors of human beings is the study of the subjective notion of time, also known as Time Perspective. However, there is a lack of consensus among various authors, on many subjects, within this field of study. Yet, there is usually an agreement relating only to: 1) the importance of the study of Time and 2) the non existence of a theoretical and practical paradigm that serves as connection between the various authors, theories and research. Until this date, a group of researchers from more than 20 countries have been developing efforts in order to make multi-cultural studies in Time Perspective. In this way, the ICTP is the next logic step in the strengthing of this international relation in order to develop thestudy of the Time Perspective.

Objectives

1) Creating a space to share and discuss the latest advances in Time Perspective and related areas;

2) Encouraging a debate that leads to an agreement about the theoretical and practical bases on which future studies about Timerely on;

3) Allowing a wider dissemination of Time Perspective among the scientific community;

4) Encouraging students and young scientists in the study of Time Perspective.

Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. Project coordinated by Karl Magnus Petersson (Universidade do Algarve), (~

PCO/110734/2009).

Objectives & Achievements

Objectives

(1) Overall, the aims of the Cognitive Neuroscience Research group is to develop a theoretical framework for the acquisition/processing of structured

sequences in the human brain, in particular with respect to language and literacy; to achieve a fundamental integration of research on dyslexia, implicit

learning, and the effects of literacy on human cognition, as well as a comprehensive understanding of the cognitive deficits underlying reading

disorders;

(2) Specifically we want to investigate whether a deficit in implicit learning contributes causally to dyslexia. Rapid object naming and artificial grammar

learning paradigms will be implemented to evaluate specific hypotheses concerning the cognitive deficits involved in reading disorders. This project is

part of the Project “Assessment and characterization of reading disorders and dyslexia in Portuguese children and adults” (Fundação para a Ciência e a

Tecnologia);

(3) To identify cognitive profiles of poor readers and dyslexic children. The identification of different profiles allows us to characterize different types of

reading disorders and dyslexia that may be relevant to the choice of rehabilitation strategies;

(4) To understand the visual attributes relevant for visual object recognition.

Main Achievements

Overall, during 2011, the cognitive neuroscience group set up several scientific experiments related to implicit learning in children with dyslexia

(artificial grammar learning), and have developed some research infrastructures, including a state-of-the-art eye-tracking laboratory.

Objectives & Achievements

Objectives

This research group is aimed at bridging between classical laboratorial paradigms of experimental cognitive and social psychology, on the one side, and domain-specific problems in applied settings, on the other. It brings together practical concerns akin to “cognitive engineeringpsychological processes of perception, attention, imagery, judgment and decision making, and a complementary facet of applied social psychology addressing interpersonal, group and inter-group processes.

Shared activities rest chiefly on quantitative approaches having a close link to psychological measurement (e.g., psychophysical scaling, signal detectiontheory, functional measurement), advanced operational and statistical analysis (e.g., multi-attribute analysis, brands of multivariateparadigms stemming out of classical experimental psychology. By defining itself more by its methodology than by a subject-principle address any of the applied areas of psychology (e.g., health, work, education) and engage into cooperative labour within distinct frameworks (e.g., Nursing, Economy, Motor Behaviour).

Research during the reporting period illustrates the application of this methodological tool-box to the following topics of dynamic representations, namely in palsy subjects; judgement and decision making (namely in adolescents); ;applied psychophysiology; social cognition, and visual processes of textural segregation and grouping by texture (study headed by a post-doc research"Commitment to Science" FCT program).

Main Achievements

FACE COGNITION

A general additive rule for the combination of facial actions in judging expressed emotions was shown, adding to previous demonstrations of additivecombinations of pain-related facial actions.

Hypothesis derived from the assumption of "holistic processing" of facial information where tested, concerning comparisons between straightinverted, and tachistoscopically presented faces. Results were at odds with the holistic predictions.

A demonstration of a "non-interactive" integration of the "whole impression of a face" with one of its component features has been achieved using synthetic Action Units.. This finding, which rested on the use of IIT methodology, argues against configural- processing interpretations of contextual effects. A new empirical test was launched in 2011, taking contextual factors "outside the face".

An exploration of the effects of smile (synthetically modeled) in expressions of pain has been conducted, showing that: (1)decreases for low level intensities of the core pain-related action units; (2) the impression that other persons were present when the expression was produced increases with smile intensity, more so for low intensity than for high intensity expressions; (3) naturalness decreases with smile intensity, more so for low than for high intensity expressions.

Page 13: General Information Host Institutions Objectives & …...FCT Relatório Científico 2011 Print: 02 -05 -2012 14:55:39 [Instituto de Psicologia Cognitiva, Desenvolvimento Vocacional

Objectives & Achievements

The metric properties of several pediatric pain face scales were investigated (Wong-Baker, FPS_R, CAPS). Considerations regarding the relative importance of upper- and lower-face features, the construct validity of Anxiety versus Pain faces, the dynamic ranges of the scales and the perceptual separation among faces were obtained for children of different ages and for different pain conditions.

DYNAMIC REPRESENTATIONS

A factorial unconfounding of the factors "target travelled distance" and "target vanishing position" in Representational Momentum (RM) was achieved and published in the "Journal of Cognitive Psychology".

The temporal course of "Representational Gravity" (RG) was studied and shown a steady increase of RG until 1000 ms, depending partly on the way gravity is embodied (lay down observers give a lesser degree of RG).

"Time to collision", RM, and mental rotations were studied in cerebral palsy subjects. Results reveal intact mental imagery in Palsy,Palsy than in Control and larger anticipation of the collision moment in Palsy. This difference in anticipation was larger when human silhouette, a result in keeping with the involvement of embodying mechanisms.

DECISION MAKING

A new index of "loss aversion" was proposed in a study with functional measurement. Loss aversion, thus gauged, was shown tostructural property of the value curve than to individual differences in risk attitudes.

Functional measurement at the ratio level of measurement was used in assessing psychophysical assumptions regarding the value curve. Quasilinearity claimed by SP/A theory was disproved; nonlinearity, concave for gains and convex for losses, was established.

Predictions derived from dual-process theories of valuation as a mix of affect and deliberation, predicting greater curvature for more hedonic outcomes, were disproved.

The comparative characterization of adolescents' decision making regarding adults was pursued under different paradigms, with physiological monitoring. A "same result-different mechanisms" explanation was suggested on the basis of the similarity of behavioral data, on the one hand, and the differences found in physiological patterns, on the other.

A SOCIAL-COGNITIVE APPROACH TO OVERINDEBTMENT

This research topic integrates strongly the social psychology and the cognitive valences of the research line. It has produced interesting results in the line of an experimental "consumer social psychology" addressing primarily the topics of credit and overindebtement.

Objectives & Achievements

Objectives

This team works in the area of Health Psychology, that has been defined has the set of contributions of Psychology to the promotion and maintenance of health, as well as the prevention and treatment of the diseases. The intervention in Health Psychology tries to help the individual in the development of abilities and behaviours that allow him to maintain his health and to avoid illness. It is a specific domain, extremely current in Psychology,presents a transversal line into several areas of Psychology, namely the Clinical Psychology, the Educational Psychology and thePsychology.

Main Achievements

This team research project in a near future is focused not only in training strategies, but also in organizational settings to promote health and wellbeing. For that we intended to analyse the impact of the variables organizational health and organizational culture in indicators of workers health and well-being, namely with professionals with higher levels of stress and burnout, such as teachers, physicians and nurses. For this research will be used anon-line process to assess the variables.

Some other researches will be focused on the importance of the variables creativity and enterprising for people health and wellanalyse that at old people, and also at young people, namely in students. With students it’ll be done also an action-research by the implementation of an on-line program of study methods and personal organization, in which the creativity and enterprising are developed. Will be assessed the impact ofthis program on indicators of health and well-being.

Another particular group we intended to study is the artists. These professionals were identified by several researches as having high levels of creativity,as well as high levels of stress and anxiety. The relationship between creativity and stress processes will be analysed by empirical research.

Stress was one of the most studied variables by this team of research. At the future, we wish to assess stress not only by likertphysiological indicators, such as cortisol. By the other way, we intended to continuous implementing programmes of stress reduction, namely by the use of more recent mindfulness techniques.

By these researches several master and doctoral thesis will be concluded during the next two years, as well as dozens of publications at international peer review journals, and communications in international scientific meetings, namely at the “34th World Conference onResearch” (2013), that will be organized at the University of Algarve, by these team of research.

Objectives & Achievements

Objectives

The main objectives of the research group, that initiates its activity in the 2007-2010 period, are (adopting a "real world research" perspective (Robson,

2011) for the 2011-2012 period:

- to build research questions focused on psychosocial problems/solutions associated with normative and non-normative transitions (family to

school/career, school to work/career, within vocational training/educational settings, work to retirement, healthy behaviors to risk behaviors, migration

movements, cultural shifts on the values structure of the society, social impacts of new technologies, unemployment to (re)employment, diseases

(cancer, stroke, etc.) to normal life, and vocational rehabilitation and transitions in mental health;

- to construct conceptual models upon previous research about successful transitions, linking the individual aspects of the problems/solutions with the

social, and the organizational contexts, anchored in contextualist-developmental perspectives;

- to design action-researches (establishing trustworthiness), using mainly longitudinal studies, and narrative approaches, complemented with

transversal studies (quantitative/qualitative flexible multi-strategy research designs), in different samplings;

- to implement and test the application outputs derived from the research, within a quality of life (and well-being) and social/organizational efficacy

positive paradigms;

- to present the findings in national and international scientific meetings, and to publish in national and international journals, and other publications.

The conceptual "organizer" of this research group is the phenomenological reality of life transitions, framed within a contextualistdevelopmental

paradigm, that the "Living Systems Framework" (Ford, D.) constitutes a good describer.

In what concerns the strategies to reach our desired achievements, they are the following:

1. Strength the links between the research funded projects anchored in the research group, having the purpose of structuring a metatheoretical model

of transitions derived both from the literature and from the research findings.

2. Associate the master and doctoral students working with the researchers of the group to the main objectives and methodologies currently under

study and use.

3. Organization of 2 international domain specific conferences (one per year) in order to present and submit to evaluation the ongoing findings of the

funded research projects, and the progress of the master and doctoral works.

4. Create the basis for an international research network/laboratory about life transitions, congregating scholars and specialists in this domain.

5. Construct a webpage in order to articulate the work of the different researchers and spread the findings, initiatives, etc., and also promoting the

enlargement/diffusion of the research network; within this webpage it is expected to found an online journal.

6. Periodically meet the other research groups to exchange ideas, findings, research methodologies, new projects, in order to assure

of practices regarding the unity and identity of our Institute, and the establishment of joint integrative multidisciplinary

publications, combined supervision of master and doctoral students, etc.).

Objectives & Achievements

7. Development of outreaching activities, namely with agents and contexts wherein the research dynamics are operating with: focus groups,

experimental psychological services, seminars, etc.).

8. Apply to national and international agencies to fund the progress of the research activities.

Considering the expected output indicators these are the minimal required for the research group:

Publications: 3 books, 6 papers in international journals, 6 papers in national journals.

Communications: 6 in international meetings, 6 in national meetings.

Reports: 2

Organization of seminars and conferences: 4.

Advanced training: 4 Ph. D. theses, 4 Master (academic) theses.

Within the context of the Strategic Project of the Research Unit the core ideas under research are present following a well

developmental paradigm, and an integrative multimethod approach, coherent with a synergistic stream in between the research groups.

Below we indicate the concrete outputs reached in 2011, by the 11 members of the reserach group:

International papers: 17 (with IF : 8)

Books: 6

Nacional papers: 22

International presentations: 28

National presentations: 9

Reports: 3

Scientific meetings: 8

Ph. D. thesis: 4

Master thesis: 36

Main Achievements

As an objective methodology of demonstrating our main achievements, below we transcript the assessment from our external advisory:

Assessment of the University of Coimbra Research Group, Psychosocial Transitions in Developmental and Multicultural Systems: The Quest for Quality.

Principal Investigator:Eduardo João Ribeiro dos Santos: As an international advisor to the Research Group, Psychosocial Transitions in Developmental

and Multicultural Systems: The Quest for Quality, I have had numerous and varied opportunities in which to witness the group’s activities over the

4 years, and I would like to share my observations as a part of the ongoing assessment of the group’s current productivity and future

Research Group has a long history of high quality efforts and significant achievements, which have contributed to its international

the most promising research units in Portugal. In addition to conducting high quality research and disseminating its results

publications in leading national and international outlets, the group has achieved great success in training graduate students and involving them in

cutting end research, thus playing a major role in promoting the future of psychological science in Portugal. The group’s efforts in organizing and

conducting international meetings are also commendable, as they facilitate international collaborations and increase the role that Portuguese

researchers play in the broader international community of scientists. The group is comprised of excellent researchers, who have contributed to its

success, and it continues to attract first class scientists due to its motivating and supportive environment. In 2008 – 2010, the group made tremendous

efforts in order to improve its productivity and enhance its resources. The group members had a high rate of publications in international and national

journals and developed a number of highly acclaimed, theoretically valuable and practically important projects that will ensure continuous productivity

in the future. I was particularly pleased with the group’s efforts toward obtaining competitive research grants, which will also help to sustain and

increase the quality of research done by the group members in the years to come. The group was able to secure 5 extramural grants in

including large grants obtained by Dr. Santos and Dr. Valentim, which is a truly remarkable accomplishment. Furthermore, by 2011 the group

able to advance at a very high pace and achieve the level of productivity that has far exceeded the goals and expectations previously

In 2011, the number of publications by the group members, including publications in international, peer-reviewed journals has reached the level of

research productivity similar to that in leading research universities in Europe and North America, exceeding target numbers by 300

different categories. Additionally, the group members have been very active as participants in national and international conferences delivering a large

number of presentations at the most important forums around the world and organizing a large number of symposia. The group

new researchers also deserves recognition. In 2011, 4 doctoral dissertations and 36 Master’s theses have been completed, which is an impressive

accomplishment that underscores the group’s assertiveness in pursuing its educational goals. Overall, the group has clearly shown excellence in its

work. Regarding the Research Group’s plans for 2012, I was impressed with the scope and diversity of the goals the group set for itself. The group

Objectives & Achievements

objectives are ambitious, but adequate, and I believe that they will be successfully accomplished. It is clear that the group has made a good use of the

previous assessments and comments received from its advisors in the past and directs its efforts toward a greater level of integration along with

preserving the diversity of its activities. In my opinion, the goals set for 2012 are highly relevant, and working toward accomplishing them will help to

further increase the quality and productivity of research and training projects conducted by the group members. It appears that the process of

planning involved conscious efforts to extend those activities that have already proven to be successful, and the group has a clear set of both

immediate and long-term objectives that ensure its commitment to continuous growth and promise future success. Overall, I found the 2012

absolutely relevant and I am eager to see the group’s development along the lines outlined in their proposal. Vladimir Skorikov, Ph. D.,
