Catholic Educa on changes lives because Jesus changes lives. Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade

Welcome to St. Nicholas Catholic Church!

The right to vote carries with it a responsibility to form one’s conscience and to study and know the issues and candidates. As faithful ci zens, we ask how each candidate will address issues that protect or threaten the dignity of every human life. There are moral and ethical dimensions to every public policy. But different issues carry different moral weight and urgency. Some involve intrinsically evil acts that can never be approved, such as the inten onal destruc on of innocent human life. Others involve an obliga on to promote human flourishing. The following ques ons are offered to assist in discerning where the candidates stand on important issues in light of our founda onal beliefs. How will each candidate:

• Ensure full respect for the right of persons and associa ons to fully par cipate in society in accord with their basic moral and religious convic ons?

• Address the preeminent requirement to protect the weakest in our midst—innocent unborn children—by restric ng and bringing to an end the destruc on of human life through abor on?

• Reject violent social policies—such as assisted suicide, the destruc on of human embryos, and the death penalty—and instead promote alterna ves rooted in a consistent ethic of life?

• Help families and children overcome poverty by crea ng more choice in educa on; by promo ng access to economic opportunity and work at just wages; and by ensuring an adequate safety net for the vulnerable?

• Achieve comprehensive immigra on reform that offers a path to ci zenship, treats immigrant workers fairly, prevents the separa on of families, maintains the integrity of our borders, and addresses the factors that compel people to leave their own countries?

• Ensure access to health care while respec ng human life, human dignity, and religious freedom in our health care system?

• Promote the natural family, based on the life-long, complementary, and frui ul union of one man and one woman, as the founda onal unit of society, and reject policies rooted in a false gender ideology?

• Ensure governmental compliance with moral limits on the use of military force—examining for what purposes it may be used, under what authority, and at what human cost?

• Exercise stewardship over our natural resources in a way that respects God’s crea on, protects the world’s poor and vulnerable, and ensures a sustainable future for our children?

• Protect the basic poli cal and civil liber es of ci zens in a manner consistent with public safety and the common good?

Everyday Stewardship Quarterly earnings reports for many publicly traded companies have either just been released or will be in the next week or so. Since every company reports them on its own schedule a er the end of the quarter, it is a rolling release that investors will examine in the days to come. How well a company does will affect its share price on the stock exchange, and the compensa on that is eventually determined by the board of directors for a company's leaders. Company policies or union contracts o en determine how the rest of the workforce down the line get to share in any benefits of a posi ve earnings report. The words of Jesus in the Gospel may seem a bit harsh this week. He tells his apostles that they could describe themselves as unprofitable servants who have only done what they were obliged to do. It does not seem to be a very fla ering picture of what it means to be a Chris an. In Jesus' day a servant performed such menial tasks that it is hard for us to even imagine them today. We hear Jesus describing the master as telling the servant to prepare something for him to eat. Such ac ons required much more than popping something in a microwave. Meal prepara on involved hard work like grinding grain, catching fish, plucking chickens, or gathering produce. It even meant hauling jars of water from the communal well. And the next day it was the same all over again. We are fortunate to live in the era that we do. While our daily work may not always seem as exci ng as it could be, we are spared much of the drudgery of the past. For us, being a servant is an en rely different dimension. We don't go down to the lake or river in hopes of catching some food for the master. Instead, our servitude is that of being a en ve to our neighbor. Our earnings report will shine if we do that! Text Reflec on "When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'" What a humble a tude this would be! Jesus challenges us today not to boast, not to seek special praise, not to consider ourselves worthy of some great reward when we follow him. Rather, he honestly reminds us that it is simply our duty to do all we "have been commanded." God made us. Our lives are a result of his loving ini a ve. Giving ourselves back to him through "the obedience of faith" (as the Second Va can Council called it), is truly the only appropriate response. Of course we are free NOT to prac ce this obedience. We are free to reject God, to ignore his commandments, even to make ourselves his enemies. But nonetheless it remains true that what we ought to do is to love God and follow his ways. And Jesus suggests today that this simple obedience should be a given in our lives. Following the commandments is merely what we are obligated to do. But, let's not forget that we are also free to do more. Because of the nature of love, we can never really exhaust it. We can always love more, serve more devotedly, give more generously. Perhaps Jesus is calling us to focus less on mee ng the bare-bones requirements of Chris anity, and instead to shi our efforts farther in the direc on of going above and beyond the call of duty. Instead of asking what is the least I HAVE to do, we would do well to ask, what ELSE can I do? What else can I do to show my gra tude to God for all he has given me? What else can I do to serve his people and nurture the world he has made? Let us aim to become truly profitable servants. td Liturgical Publica ons, Inc.
