• To check that you have the relevant competencies to undertake your role

• To provide a general overview of requirements at both sites and offices

Office Health, Safety & Environment

• Display Screen Equipment Assessment

• No trailing cables or other trip hazards

• Awareness of Fire Procedures

• Manual Handling, keep heavy items at lower levels

• Take care when opening drawers in filing cabinets to avoid it over balancing and remember to shut drawers after use.

• Take care when making hot drinks

• Report any damage to electrical equipment and do not use if there is any risk of electric shocks i.e. damaged cables

• Report any problems relating to lighting and ventilation

• Remember to close windows at end of day

• Report any suspicious situations related to security of the office

Company Drugs and Alcohol Policy

• No alcohol or illegal drugs to be brought

to Barhale offices or sites

• Random D&A tests will be undertaken at

Barhale sites

• If you have to take drugs for a medical

problem you need to let your supervisor

know.

supervisor

Injuries and Near Misses

• An Injury includes any injury no

matter how minor.

• A Near Miss Includes:

– Unsafe condition i.e. no edge

protection, untied ladder or trip

hazard etc.

– Unsafe Act – working ahead of

the trench support or walking

under a slung load

– Unsafe incident – something

unplanned happens which does

not actually cause injury but

could have

• Please report ALL injuries and ALL near misses

• We will not blame you or take action against individuals reporting near misses.

Site Mobile Phone Use

• While carrying out site construction work (actual work)

• while moving about the site

• while operating any type of plant or machinery including Excavators, Cranes, Dumpers, Dump Trucks & Power Tools

• while driving any vehicle

• where local restrictions apply such as site rules or when specific work instructions do not allow it

You are not permitted to use a mobile phone on site as follows:

If you do need to use your mobile then only do so once you

have stopped work and moved to the demarcated safe area

• All site personnel will be expected to

wear clothing compliant with corporate

imagery

• Clothing issued will be expected to be

kept in good condition to maintain the

correct professional image

• Under no circumstances are tee shirts

to be removed or shorts to be worn on

any site

PPE Rules / Requirements

• Safety Helmets

• High visibility vests or jackets

• Steel toe capped lace up safety boots with mid sole protection (No RIGGER boots)

• Gloves are readily available and are mandatory*

• Safety glasses or helmet visors are mandatory*

* unless otherwise specified by the Site Manager for particular

activities or conditions

Occupational HealthAll Barhale employees complete a pre-employment health questionnaire prior to start work on site. Have you completed your questionnaire?

You will also be expected to attend health surveillance as part of the company two year rolling programme. The process comprises the following and generally takes one hour to complete:

• HAVS assessment and questionnaire (if deemed applicable)• Musculo-skeletal Questionnaire - completed on a bi-annual basis• Audiometry (hearing test)• Lung function• Eye sight / vision testing• Dermatological Examination• General Health Questionnaire

Results from the surveillance process are strictly confidential and are held in confidence by Human Resources as part of your personnel records.

Company Site Rules

1. All personnel are to receive a Site Safety Induction before being allowed towork on site.

2. Frequent or long-term visitors to be Site Safety inducted. An inducted personmust accompany infrequent or short-term visitors on site.

3. Safety Helmet, Safety Boots, High Viz Vest/Coat must be worn when on site.

4. Minimum dress code on site is overalls or long trousers with a tee shirt. Noshorts or shirt removal allowed on site.

5. All work areas to be continually kept clean and tidy.

6. No operative to use any plant or equipment unless they are trained andcompetent to in its use. Operated plant is by certificated drivers only.

7. No excavation work to be carried out unless the area has been checked forunderground services.

8. Excavations to be edge protected with proper access/egress.

9. For work at height above 2 metre, proper scaffold, platform or safety harnessmust be used.

10. Wear hearing protection at all times where the noise level exceeds 85dB: jackhammer, sthil saw, grinder etc.

11. Read and comply with all safety posters and signs.

12. Report all accidents and incidents to your supervisor immediately.

13. Inspect all tools and work equipment before using or at least daily.

14. Any person found to be under the influence of alcohol or non-prescribeddrugs will be suspended immediately pending disciplinary procedures.

15. Inform the Site Manager of any illness and/or medication you are receiving.

16. All site personnel must be continually aware and vigilant for their own andothers health and safety and report anything they consider sub standard.

17. Be courteous to the public and ensure they are not put at risk.

18) All personnel to carry leptospirosis medical cards.

19) All site personnel to sign on and off site.

20) All site personnel to comply with site mobile phone use rules

comply with company rules as

described in this briefing.

In addition each site manager

produces a set of site specific rules,

similar to those shown to the left.

These Local Site rules will be briefed

as part of the site specific induction

module (Module 2) and will be

displayed in canteens and notice

boards.

Make sure you are familiar with them.

Safe Systems of Work Briefings• You will be required to attend risk

assessment and method statement briefings

for your work activities:

• Pay attention

• Ask about anything you do not understand

• Give constructive comments and if you know

of better methods or disagree with the

methodology ensure this is discussed.

• Comply with all working methods and

control measures.

• If changes are required to the working

methods during the activities then stop work

and consult your Supervisor.

• Excavations: Access & ladder secure; edge protection; properly shored; edge loading & closeness of vehicles or heavy loads

• Work area: Clear access to all work faces and area free from trip hazards; stores and materials in identified stores area

• Traffic: Signing and guarding correct (as Chapter 8 NRSWA)

• Protection of Public: Adequate barriers or Herras Enclosures; pedestrian routes safe and clearly identified; signs or other arrangements (i.e. guard or escorts required)

• Are you going to over pump, de-water or pump excavations ?

If yes do you have a Permit to Pump in place?

• Should you have silt tanks or other arrangements in place ?

• If using fuels or chemicals do you have a spill kit nearby?

• If there was a spillage incident could the run off enter drains or watercourses ? If yes they must be protected.

• Think before you throw. Are you wasting something that could be reused? If not are you putting it in the right skip?

• Weekly site safety meeting and discussion

• Held by Site Manager or Foreman

• All site personnel to attend

• Two way discussion your involvement and ideas are important to improve site health and safety

• Discuss the weeks near miss reports and raise any new near misses

• Could include weekly TBT

Vehicle Movements / Segregation

• Vehicle and plant movements will be

segregated from pedestrians by barriered routes where practicable.

• Always work in view of plant operators

or banksmen. Remember if you cant see the operator he can’t see you!

• All reversing vehicles or plant must be controlled by a banksmen

• Excavators and Cranes must be controlled by a Banksman

• Always use pedestrian routes provided

• Be aware of lifting and crush zones

• Never walk beneath a suspended load

• Keep to site speed limits

CG4099 Version 1Safety Coaches (if relevant to your business unit)

Safety Coaches are internally recruited operatives who demonstrate a

passion for improving the safety and welfare of their fellow employees and

sub-contractors. They are full time in this role.

The role of the Safety Coach is two-fold:

• to ‘coach’ the workforce in good safety practice and give on-the-job safety

training and advice

• to ensure that the communication of good safe practice is on going both

on and between sites

The safety coach is not a health and safety officer, and do not carry out

audits or site inspections.

They will help and advise site workers on the safest way to work
