STAFF UPDATE

We are pleased to welcome Ms. Eliza Ferreira to General Currie Elementary as a member of our resource team. Ms. Ferreira has been to our school often as a TOC (Teacher on Call) and we are pleased to have her working with us on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the rest of the school year.

A STUDENT VERIFICATION FORM has been handed out to your child through his/her homeroom teacher. It is important that up-to-date phone numbers are included to allow the school to contact the home or a designated alternate (other than a parent) in case of an emergency. The school must also be aware of all medical issues. If there is a “Y” beside Medical Alert please write details beside it. In addition, if there are any custody issues that have an impact on who can pick up the student, we require legal documentation to support your requests. Please ensure that we have daycare contact information if applicable. Thank you in advance for updating all student information. Please make sure to return updated forms to your child’s teacher.

KNITTING CLUB!

General Currie is offering a Knitting Club again this fall. Students from Gr. 4-7 are invited

to join the club, which will be meeting Tuesdays at lunch in the Library. Students wishing to join will need parental permission (letters can be found at the office) and will need to provide their own yarn and needles (6mm or larger please). Students do not need to know how to knit: lessons will be provided. Each person will be knitting a scarf for charity, and when they finish that, they may choose to make one for themselves as well. If you are a knitter and can help us with this project we would love to have you join us. Donations of yarn would also be gratefully accepted.

PARKING LOT CONCERNS!

Our parking lots are designated for staff only. We have limited spots for our Staff members. Please DO NOT park along driveways or in any area that is not a designated spot. Congestion in the parking lot in the morning, at lunchtime and after school is very unsafe for the children. Parents are encouraged to walk to and from school with their children.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES The Board of School Trustees has approved a convenience charge of $30.00 per full time student in Grades K-7 (agendas will also be supplied at an additional cost of $5.00 for grades 1-7) making a total of $35.00 per student. A separate letter will be sent for additional Kindergarten cooking and craft fees. Cheques will be collected by the classroom teacher (do not send cash). Cheques may be made payable to: General Currie School. Please make a separate cheque for each child and write your child’s name and division in the “memo” portion of the cheque.

LUNCHTIME MUSIC

If you have walked by our school during a sunny lunch hour, you may have heard music playing and seen children dancing by the front doors. We are lucky to have student DJs working our sound system, providing active entertainment for other students. Thanks to all our DJ volunteers, and thanks to Ms. Acheson for getting our sound system set up to rock those tunes! Keep up all that great energy, dancers - it is great to see everyone having a great time together and your dance moves are impressive!

IF YOUR CHILD IS LATE OR ABSENT . . . If your child will be late or absent for any reason please remember to call our Early Warning number 604-668-6441. Remember this system is in place for your child’s safety and the number is available to call at any time.

Cross Country Runners Make Currie AllStars Proud

On Wednesday, October 14th, our Currie AllStars took to the track, and other parts of Minoru Park in The Richmond School District Annual Fun Run. We had over forty runners representing our school from grades 1 through 7. Students practiced twice a week at 8:00am in order to prepare for their various distances. They ran distances from 900m to 1400m and provided some dramatic finishes as they raced toward the finish line. Our grade one boys had the largest number of participants and an incredibly strong finish for all participants. For several of our students this was their first run and hopefully not their last! Congratulations to all of our participants who so proudly demonstrated being STARS both on and off the track. It was wonderful to see teammates cheering each other on and racing with our runners along the last turn! It provided some much needed momentum. And also, a big Thank You to our coaches, Ms. Espenant, Ms. Mais, Mr. Campbell, Ms. Rooney and Ms. Monger and to Ms. Foisy who helped on our run day.

PARKING LOT SAFETY Parents are reminded NOT to use the back parking lot off of Jones Road for dropping off and/or picking up students – this creates a safety hazard for all concerned. The front parking lot is open at all times. Please use the loop in the main parking lot that was designed for quick drop-offs and pick-ups. Please DO NOT leave your car unattended.

PHOTO RETAKES

Individual student photograph retakes will be taken on Thursday, November 12th. Wear your smile!

PHONE USE School phones are for emergency use only – students are not allowed to use them for social arrangements. Parents: please arrange after-school pickup prior to the school day! Thank you.

REMEMBER TO DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER As the weather becomes colder and wetter, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately to be outside. A waterproof jacket, mitts and hat as well as appropriate footwear are recommended. Classes often go outside for PE and all children are expected to go out at recess and lunch. If your child is not well enough to go outside, he/she is probably not well enough to be at school.

IS YOUR CHILD TOO SICK TO BE AT SCHOOL? We are asking for your support to maintain the health of all children by keeping your child home when he/she is ill. Their recovery will be sped up when they have the opportunity to rest at home. Children should be kept home from school or daycare when they have any of the following symptoms: • Fever over 38 degrees Centigrade • Diarrhea and/or vomiting in the previous 48 hours • A rash that has not yet been diagnosed • Blister like sores that have not yet been diagnosed • Cough, runny nose and sore throat Parents will be contacted to take their children home if they become ill with symptoms during the day.

NEXT PAC MEETING Wednesday October 21st @ 6:30 pm

Child minding is available. Everyone is welcome! We value the contributions that our volunteer parents make to our school.

Please participate in our Parent Advisory Council. You can make a difference at General Currie Elementary.
