of clothing and equipment. All the students completed the training successfully

with desired level of standards .Nominal roll of the students of each state,

endorsed with their performance reports are enclosed as Appendix “A”.

INTRODUCTION 3. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports, (JIM & WS) conducted

Adhoc Adventure Courses for NSS volunteers of 07 different states as recommended

by Indian Mountaineering Foundation and sponsored by Ministry of Youth Affairs and

Sports, New Delhi.

AIM 4. To expose the youth to nature, kindling the spirit of adventure, development of

personality, character, courage, sportsmanship and confidence through adventure

activities to strengthen the national bond of integration amongst the youth of different

regions with cultural diversity as well as to boost adventure tourism in J & K State.

STANDARDS TO BE ACHIEVED 5. The competence levels expected from students upon completion of the Adhoc

Adventure Course are as follows:-

(a) Adventurous attitude.

(b) High Standard of youth activities & techniques.

(c) Personality development/National Integration through cultural exchange

(d) Empowered & well developed adolescents.

OBJECTIVES 6. (a) Promote adventure activities in the state.

(b) Impart training on technical aspects of Mountain activities.

(c) Hone Mountaineering skills of individuals.

(d) Create environment awareness amongst youth.

(e) Build personality / character through sportsmanship.

OPENING ADDRESS 7. Opening address was given by Capt Rahul Mahajan ,Medical Officer, JIM & WS

making the students aware of the well known history of the esteemed Institute

JIM & WS. Students were explained safety and security measures to be observed

around Sanasar training camp area. They were also explained the discipline to be

maintained during training and the standards expected at the end of this Adventure

Course.

8. A copy of 10 days training schedule for NSS volunteers is enclosed as Appendix “B”. CONDUCT OF TRAINING 9. The students were trained in Acclimatization walk, Introduction to Mountaineering

Equipment, Rope Knots, Hitches, rope coiling, Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Base

making, casualty evacuation, load packing, and treks to different picturesque and

historical places around the area, tent pitching and Tyrolean Traverse and survival in

Jungles. The students also got familiarized with Mountain Hazards, illness of

Mountainous and high altitude area with its first aid and treatment.

10. Details of aspects covered during the training are enunciated in subsequent

paras. The training photographs of volunteers of different states are attached. ACCLIMATIZATION WALK / PHYSICAL EXERCISE

11. Given the location of the sub centre of the Institute at approx 6800 ft, though

acclimatization was not mandatory, for developing physical fitness and mental

robustness, initial period was utilized to achieve the same. The students were routinely

taken outdoor in early morning hours for mountain PT to maintain the acquired physical

standards.

TECHNICAL TRAINING

12. Training was provided in basic skills of rock craft, administration in mountain

terrain & introduction and use of mountaineering equipment, preparing backpack for trek

and walking in mountainous terrain, survival in jungles. Details of rock craft and other

adventure activities conducted are as follows:

(a) Rock Climbing & Rappelling: The students were exposed to various types

of rock surfaces for climbing and rappelling techniques. They were explained

the principles of climbing & rappelling ,the safety measures to be followed and

use of these techniques to cross high rock faces while going on long treks.

b) Tyrolean traverse & Casualty Evacuation: Students were provided

fundamental knowledge in the form of lecture cum demonstration on methods of

negotiating fast flowing streams and rivers in mountainous areas and Tyrolean

traverse followed by practicing it in groups. They also learned the method of

carrying and evacuation of casualty when faced with natural and man made

disasters.

(c) Treks: Students were trained in trekking. They got familiarized with the

equipment needed while going on long treks. They were taken to historical

places like Peerah Gaurikund, Sudhmahadev, Shivgarhdhar, Nathatop etc to see

the beautiful places around the area and exchange culture , enroute they met

and conversed with the villagers and children, interacting and exchanging

culture which helped them to know the locals better.

(d) Tent Pitching: Students were demonstrated the method of tent pitching and

they practiced pitching family tents, two men, three men and dome tents which

were used by themselves during stay around the training camp. They were

made aware of use of these tentages during survival camps in the jungles while

on search ,rescue and special missions.

(e) Lectures/Presentations: The following aspects of adventure activities and

related subjects were covered in great details in the form lectures and

demonstrations.

(i) Introduction to Mountaineering Equipment

(ii) Do’s and Dont’s of Mountaineering

(iii) Environmental Awareness/ Tree plantation

(iv) Mountain/snow hazards

(v) High altitude illnesses / Cold Injuries with its first aid

(vi) Personality development through cultural exchange/Programme

INSTRUCTORS DELIVERING LECTURES

(f) Sports: Students were made to take interest to participate in games like

volley ball, badminton, cricket & kabbadi. Through discussions with the

instructors they also got familiarized with adventure sports like skiing,

paragliding, water rafting and Para jumping. Students showed keen desire to

undergo training at the institute for the adventure sports in near future.

ENJOYING GAMES

(d) Cultural Programme & Personality Development: Everyday the

volunteers gathered in the evening to share their cultural views in the form

singing, dancing, folk tales, speeches and they were guided and advised by the

superiors present which helped the volunteers to exchange their culture as well

as to develop their personality through discussions.

(e) Survival in Jungles: The participants were trained in pitching their tents

in jungles while on some missions which they may face in their future. They were

taught selecting proper site, availability of water, drainage and sanitation. This

gave them an opportunity to experience the thrill of being an outdoor adventure.

Each NSS team stayed in survival camp for 4 to 5 days provided the weather

conditions are favorable.

PARTICIPANTS PITCHING TENTS ACCOMMODATION

13. The accommodation facility was made in Institute Huts at Sanasar and in

tentages during survival / Jungle camp at Patnitop with good lodging and dining

facilities. Furnished rooms with attached bathrooms were provided to a group of 05 to

06 students in a room during their stay at Sanasar, where as they stayed in a group of

2/3 in 0ne tent to experience the out door living during stay at Patnitop.

10 FOOD 14. The participants were provided hygienic and palatable food during the training

with additional energy supplements like fruits, dry fruits, toffees and sweets etc.. Hot

food was served with the help of food warmers to keep the food warm & fresh.

ENJOYING SUMPTUOUS FOOD EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING 15. Keeping in view the harsh conditions and cold and rainy weather of Patnitop &

Sanasar area the participants were provided with quality equipment and clothing gear

for training purpose. They were issued with quality clothing like t-shirt, sun-cap, sling

etc.by the institute whereas Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports provided the volunteers

with Trek-suits , Shoes and water bottle.

11 MEDICAL FIRSTAID 16 First aid to participants was provided round the clock by trained staff of the

institute. Dedicated medical officer and officer incharge was available for most of the

time to give expert medical aid as well as to take care of other demands and difficulties

felt necessary from time to time by the participants. Referral facility was available to

nearby sub Distt hospital with ambulance transport.

VISIT OF MR NAWANG RIGZIN JORA, HOB’BLE TOURISM MINISTER, J&K

17. Mr Nawang Rigzin Jora, Hon’ble Tourism Minister, Jammu & Kashmir visited

Sanasar on 10 Jun 2010, and he visited the Sub Centre, JIM & WS, Sanasar. He

praised the volunteers of NSS Tamilnadu state and share few words them. The escort

of the NSS team presented a Shawl to The Minister on behalf of all volunteers also

Capt Rahul Mahajan, Med. Officer of JIM & WS presented a memento on behalf of

Principal and all staff of the Institute.

PERFORMANCE OF THE COURSES 18. The Institute conducted 07 courses each of ten days duration for different states

viz. Himachal Pradesh , Uttrakhand , Orissa , Tamilnadu , Kerala , Karnataka and

Meghalaya each team comprising of approximate ten boys, ten girls and two

escorts (Male/Female) w.e.f 24 May 2010 to 11 Jul 2010. The performance of

22 OBSERVATIONS 19. (a) The participants showed marked interest in learning and adopting the skills of

Adventure activities.

(b) The participants improved a lot in their physical as well as mental capabilities.

(c) They showed keen interest in participating in other adventure courses at JIM &

WS.

(d) The participants got involved in every adventure activity in a well disciplined

manner and gave best of their performance

(e) The volunteers learned to stay in tentages during survival camp, adjusted with

difficulties faced and improved a lot in their perception and understanding with

each others and with the locals.

Institute during the camp.

23 RECOMMENDATIONS 21. It is recommended that more NSS adventure groups may be sent to JIM & WS

for other adventure activities like Basic, Advance Mountaineering, Mountain Adventure,

Mountain rescue courses, Basic, Intermediate and Advance skiing courses and

paragliding courses for the current as well as for the upcoming academic years and

also in all the sub training centers of JIM & WS, since NSS volunteers are keen to see

and experience other training places of the Institute.

GRADUATION CEREMONY 22. The students of each state presented a colorful cultural programme after

completion of scheduled training. Beautiful events like singing, dancing, Jokes and

mimicry presented by the participants revealed the unity of India in its cultural diversity .

The event was followed by the distribution of the course badges and certificates by Capt

Rahul Mahajan, Medical Officer ,JIM & WS. He had mouthful praise for the participants

who presented the colorful cultural programme and he also presented the memento

bearing Institute crest to the escorts of each party on behalf of Principal JIM & WS.

CONCLUSION 23. During the Adventure camp the training was imparted to make the NSS

volunteers confident of living in Mountainous terrain, adjust with difficulties faced during

their stay away from home and to accept and adapt with different cultures. Cultural

exchange through adventure helped the volunteers in development of personality,

sportsmanship and character. They were also made aware of the environmental

changes and its adverse effects in future and the steps to be taken to counter the issue.

They were guided regarding how they can pursue their profession taking in

consideration their hobby of interest in adventure. The performance of the participants

validates the fact that desired standards of exposure and training in adventure activities

and mountain techniques were achieved.
