EXAMS▸ Documented learning differences? Please follow college policy

to arrange for accommodations during the first two weeks of the semester.

▸ Students are required to take all exams. There are NO MAKE-UP EXAMS.

▸ Expect to be away for an official College activity? Your exam can be administered by a coach or other non-student person that accompanies you.

▸ It is YOUR to let me know, well in advance, of any possible trips and to arrange with a person (e.g., your coach) to administer the exam.

EXAMS: EXCUSED AND UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

▸ You must have your advising Dean contact your professor if you want to be excused from an exam for a medical or family emergency.

▸ You must authorize the Health Center to report your illness to your advising Dean.

▸ The grade for an exam missed due to an excused absence will be calculated based on your three remaining unadjusted exam grades, normalized by the class average.

▸ The grade for an unexcused missed exam is zero.

Page 17: GENERAL CHEMISTRY WITH PROF. MADISON WELCOME TO …web.colby.edu/ch141/files/2018/09/Ch141_Day1.pdf · 2018-09-05 · HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: MASTERING CHEMISTRY Assignments involve

EXAM GRADING

▸ To encourage students to work towards improvement, all hour exams will be adjusted upwards based on future test scores.

▸ All hour-exam grades will be adjusted upwards by replacing the exam score with the average of that exam grade and the subsequent unadjusted exam grade (the final exam will be used to adjust the third exam grade).

▸ Note that this recalculation is automatic, and will only be applied if it improves your grade.

Page 18: GENERAL CHEMISTRY WITH PROF. MADISON WELCOME TO …web.colby.edu/ch141/files/2018/09/Ch141_Day1.pdf · 2018-09-05 · HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: MASTERING CHEMISTRY Assignments involve

▸ Assignments involve quantitative problem solving.

▸ Tip: work through problems on paper first, and keep them for future reference.

▸ To compensate for online access issues, forgetfulness, busy student schedules, and electronic dogs that may eat your homework, we will automatically drop the three worst homework grades.

HOMEWORK: OPTIONAL PRACTICE PROBLEMS

▸ Optional practice problems will be assigned from the back of the textbook chapter and online through Mastering Chemistry.

▸ Work through as many of these problems as necessary to make sure you have a good grasp of the material.

▸ The key indicator of success in this course is the ability to work through problems without depending on an answer key or on the online ‘hint’ feature.

▸Practice, Practice, Practice!

POLICY: ELECTRONIC DEVICES

▸ Remember: Laptop computers, cell phones, and tablets can be useful educational tools to facilitate learning.

▸ However, they can also be a significant distraction to you and other members of your class.

▸ We (your classmates and I) request that all students be respectful of the instructor and other students when using electronic devices during lecture or lab.

Page 25: GENERAL CHEMISTRY WITH PROF. MADISON WELCOME TO …web.colby.edu/ch141/files/2018/09/Ch141_Day1.pdf · 2018-09-05 · HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: MASTERING CHEMISTRY Assignments involve

POLICY: STUDENT COLLABORATION

▸ We strongly encourage students to work together in preparing for class and laboratory.

▸ Small group discussions are very useful in generating ideas that aid in problem solving and stimulate learning.

▸ Work together on additional practice problems from the text (not Mastering Chemistry graded problems).

Page 26: GENERAL CHEMISTRY WITH PROF. MADISON WELCOME TO …web.colby.edu/ch141/files/2018/09/Ch141_Day1.pdf · 2018-09-05 · HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: MASTERING CHEMISTRY Assignments involve

STUDENT COLLABORATION: GUIDELINES FOR WHAT’S OK AND WHAT IS NOT

▸ On all individual graded work, assistance that you give or receive must be limited to correcting errors in the data as recorded in the laboratory.

▸ It is not appropriate to give your work, including spreadsheets, to another student for copying or comparison.

▸ This policy includes both calculations and answers to questions in laboratory write-ups. In lab, your collaboration ends with collection of data.

Page 27: GENERAL CHEMISTRY WITH PROF.

▸ All material that you submit for a grade must be the result of your own thoughts and work.

▸ Graded work includes exams, quizzes, lab reports, and online homework.

▸ Lab reports and graded homework are just as important with regards to academic dishonesty as tests.

Give Credit. Build Trust. Reach Out.

WHAT DO PAST CH141 STUDENTS SAY?

If you are struggling with the material, don’t hope for the best and do nothing. Go to office hours, or even better, find a tutor.

You’ll feel better after taking that extra step.

Do the mastering chemistry problem sets with care and you will understand the material very well ;)!!

Prioritize this course! Always set aside an hour or two every time you have homework so that you can do it fully, because

it's so worth it. And take notes in class AND out of the textbook on your own time!
