Scientific Glass and Instruments (SGI) has over 75 years of experience in manufacturing and supplying quality glassware to almost all laboratory and research fields including chromatography, research, environmental,

cryogenics, medicine, medical instrumentation, oil, refinery QC plus chemical re-search and production. From the companies beginning in 1945 as Scientific Glass Blowing Company, we have steadily expanded our product line to meet the tech-nological demands made by industry and supply our products to an every expand-ing domestic and international cliental. SGI offers it’s customers a wide choice of product categories ranging from adapters to varied configured flasks, vacuum apparatus with just about any option imagined applied. Even though SGI offers a large catalog selection of apparatus the company still specializes in the custom design and fabrication utilizing customer drawings or sketches to achieve our customers vision and products. Glassware for private label and OEM is also part of SGI’s many varied capabilities including expert repair of intricate glass products that extend its useful life at a nominal costs. Catalog Arrangement: The Thirty Two sections of this catalog are listed in alphabetically in the table of contents along with the appropriate page references. Every item within each sec-tion is identified by individual catalog numbers, all of which are in numerical se-quence throughout the section. Prices are purposely omitted to provide better maintenance of current price supplements.

Pricing: Prices are shown on a separate list are current at the time of publication but sub-ject to change without prior notification.

Limited Demand Items: Some items with limited demand are not always kept in stock for immediate ship-ment. Orders containing such items are shipped partial so that stock items will not be delayed unless requested.

Special Apparatus: SGI welcomes requests for special (custom) apparatus. To facilitate prompt produc-tion please include the following when ordering: 1. A sketch or drawing which clearly specifies all dimensions and tolerances. 2. Glass type, number of items required and desired delivery date. 3. Any additional information that you feel would help SGI produce the items

Return of Materials: Please write, call or email SGI for instructions when you find it necessary to return material. Return materials authorization will be issued if deemed necessary by SGI. When shipping returned material be sure to include a packing list and clearly label each box with the return senders name, address, purchase order number and the return authorization number or name of person authorized to accept returns. If re-turn is due to customer ordering error, SGI retains the right to chare a 25% re-stocking fee.

Special or custom items may not be returned. SGI reserves the right to produce custom items at 10% over or under ordered quantity and will only ship and invoice the amount of items actually fabricated.

Repair: Often it is possible for SGI to repair glassware that has suffered minor damage. In order to make this possible and as a precaution against further damage please properly clean and package the material to prevent additional damage during trans-port. Upon receipt SGI will inspect the items and determine if the items are repair-able. SGI reserves the right to determine if broken items can be repaired cost ef-fectively and will dispose of unrepairable items unless previously requested by the customer to do otherwise. Any items that are received dirty or with residual chemi-cal residue will be immediately returned to the customer for proper cleaning or dis-posal. SGI will not be held responsible for disposing of dirty or contaminated items. Please attach an itemized packing list to every carton itemizing all contents and any references to purchase order numbers, numbers, letters or correspondence.

Packing Material: DO NOT discard the container or packing material until all the contents have been

carefully checked against the packing list or invoice.

Claims: Notification of any shortages or damage must be made within 10 days of material receipt to SGI customer service department. Claims not made within 10 days may not be honored.

Shipment damage by carrier: Hold all the damaged material including all packing material and cartons for carrier inspection. Notify SGI customer service of the damage and SGI will call for a car-rier inspection report. No adjustment or correction will be made without this report. Hold damaged goods for possible salvage or we will notify you when to dispose of the damaged goods.

Credits Credits will be issued for over payment, damaged or returns and will remain on your account for no longer than one year form the credit issued date. SGI reserves the right to refuse refunds or replacement after that elapsed time.

Glassware Cleaning


Cleaning and Handling of Glass Apparatus:

The borosilicate glass used to manufacture laboratory apparatus has excellent resistance to most acids except hydrofluoric. Strong alkaline solutions such as hot caustic solution will attack glass after prolonged contact. Dilute detergent solutions will not have a serious ef-fect on glass, unless exposed for long periods or allowed to dry on the graduations, inscrip-tions, etched line fillers or fused screen printings. Low actinic amber coatings are the same composition as the glass itself and can only be removed by dissolving a layer of glass.

General Cleaning Methods:

Clean glassware will produce a uniformly wetted surface when distilled water is applied. Contaminates such as grease will prevent uniform wetting and the water will collect in drops. Non-uniform wetting causes capacity irregularities by distorting the meniscus. Vol-umes can also be affected by residue adhering to the vessel. Even with clean glassware, variations in the apparent capacity are possible if there is contamination on the liquids sur-face. Fatty or other organic subsistence may produce a change in the liquid surface ten-sion that will distort the meniscus. To properly clean glassware use a 1 to 2% solution of commercial detergent that is phos-phate free and biodegradable. Do not use abrasives on glassware that will mare or cause scratches. This will prevent proper drainage and will collect contaminants over time. In preparation of calibration all glassware should be rinsed thoroughly with distilled, not tap water to prevent surface deposits which will cause erratic results.

Cleaning Methods by Contaminant

Oil based Stopcock Grease

Rinse with acetone once or twice till film is removed.

Silicone based Greases

Soak for 2 hours in warm decahydronapthalene (decalin). Drain then rinse with Acetone

then Distilled water.

Iron Stains

Rinse using one part hydrochloric acid to one part water till deposit are removed. Then

wash in distilled water thoroughly.

Mercury Residue

Dip in hot nitric acid for one minute then rinse thoroughly with distilled water.

Permanganate Stains

Use on part 3%sulphuric acid mixed with one part 3% hydrogen peroxide solution then

rinse thoroughly with distilled water.

Bacteriological Materials

Soak 2 to 3 minutes in cresol or Lysol solution then autoclave in steam.

Albuminous or carbonaceous Materials

Soak in a 1 to 2% solution of detergent then rinse thoroughly with distilled water. Use

ethyl alcohol or acetone for drying if necessary.
