2014 Nobel Awards

The Nobel Prizes are prizes awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Academy, the Karolinska Institute and the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals and organizations who make outstanding contributions in the fields of chemistry, physics, literature, peace, and physiology or medicine. They were established by the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel, which dictates that the awards should be administered by the Nobel Foundation. The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was established in 1968 by the Sveriges Riksbank, the central bank of Sweden, for contributions to the field of economics. Each recipient, or "laureate", receives a gold medal, a diploma, and a sum of money, which is decided by the Nobel Foundation, yearly.

Chemistry

Americans Eric Betzig and William Moerner and German scientist Stefan Hell won the Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for developing new methods that let microscopes see finer details than they could before

The three scientists were cited for “the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy,” which the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said had bypassed the maximum resolution of traditional optical microscopes.

Betzig (54) works at the Howard Hughes Medfical Institute in Ashburn, Virginia. Hell (51) is director at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany. Moerner (61) is a professor at Stanford University in California.

Physics

Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano of Japan and U.S. scientist Shuji Nakamura won the Nobel Prize in physics for the invention of blue light-emitting diodes a new energy efficient and environment-friendly light source.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the invention is just 20 years old, “but it has already contributed to create white light in an entirely new manner to the benefit of us all".

Prof. Akasaki, 85, is a professor at Meijo University and distinguished professor at Nagoya University. Prof. Amano, 54, is also a professor at Nagoya University, while the 60-year-old Prof. Nakamura is a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Medicine

U.S.-British scientist John O’Keefe and Norwegian married couple May—Britt Moser and Edvard Moser won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering the brain’s positioning system.

This “inner GPS” helps explain how the brain creates “a map of the space surrounding us and how we can navigate our way through a complex environment,” the Nobel Assembly said.

O’Keefe, of University College London, discovered the first component of this positioning system in 1971 when he found that a certain type of nerve cell was always activated when a rat was at a certain place in a room.

Thirty--four years later May-Britt and Edvard Moser, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, identified another type of nerve cell that generates a coordinate system for precise path—finding, the assembly said

Literature

Patrick Modiano of France, whose work focuses on the Nazi occupation and its effect on his country, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday.

The Swedish Academy gave the 8 million kronor ($1.1 million) prize to Modiano “for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation.”

Modiano whose novel “Missing Person” won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1978 was born in a west Paris suburb two months after World War II ended in Europe in July 1945.

Economics

French economist Jean Tirole won the 2014 Nobel Prize for economics for his work that has shed light on how governments should regulate powerful companies that dominate markets, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

“Jean Tirole is one of the most influential economists of our time,’’ the academy said. “Most of all, he has clarified how to understand and regulate industries with a few powerful firms.’’

The economist will receive an 8 million Swedish crown ($1.1 million) prize

The prize is officially called - Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

Peace

Kailash Satyarthi, 60-year-old child rights activist from Madhya Pradesh, and Malala Yousafzai, who has risked her life to wage a campaign for girls’ education in Pakistan, are the joint winners of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

“It is an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said on Friday. They were chosen for the prize for “their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”

Universal Health Assurance Mission

Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has announced that the government will introduce a universal health insurance programme under UHAM (Universal Health Assurance Mission). The programme will seek to provide all people access to tertiary medical services. In a country where only approximately 25% of the population is estimated to be covered by insurance, this step will go far in increasing insurance coverage and lowering premium rates.

Expert Group

An Expert Group headed by Dr.Ranjit Roy Chaudhary was formed to prepare a roadmap to UHAM. The group submitted its report in eight weeks and the report is now under consideration of the Health Ministry.

Projected Highlights of UHAM

Set to be the largest public health insurance programme in the world, with free insurance for persons in BPL category and low premium rates for rest of the population

50 essential generic drugs, 30 AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) drugs and a package of diagnostics to be provided free of cost to all citizens at government hospitals and health centres across the country

Package containing information regarding preventive and positive health information for all citizens

UHAM Agency, an autonomous oversight body will be formed to monitor the activities and ensure genuine protection of the beneficiaries

Universal Health Coverage (UHC)

WHO defines UHC as “ensuring that all people can use the promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative health services they need, of sufficient quality to be effective, while also ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user to financial hardship.” UHC can be broken down into three main components

Equity in access to healthcare – all persons, irrespective of their financial status, must be able to access healthcare

The medical care provided must be of good quality and standard and should result in improvement of health of patients

The cost of care must not be so expensive that it puts the seeker of medical help in financial hardship

Significantly, the Millennium Development Goals call for universal access to reproductive health and treatment for HIV/Aids. The WHO constitution of 1948 also declares health a fundamental human right.
