M673L2

The ideal 6kW generator set is small and lightweight. The M673L2 certainly qualifi es. But it stands apart through its remarkable long-life reliability. The reason? The M673L2 runs at 1800 rpm (1500 rpm for 50 Hz), instead of 3600 rpm. Consider that during only 2000 hours of operation the 1800 rpm M673L2 will turn 216 million fewer revolutions than a 3600 rpm set. Its pistons will travel 38,522 fewer miles. Its cylinders will withstand 108 million fewer detonations. Which engine do you think will give more years of reliable service? We couldn’t agree more. The M673L2 has a balanced Lugger three cylinder diesel instead of a rough two banger. Four plateform isolation mounts reduce vibration transmission even more. For maximum comfort afloat the new M673L2 has a Sound Maze air intake system. Air enters through a molded rubber hose and an acoustic dampening chamber. Air goes in but much less noise gets out. For maximum sound attenuation, specify a sound enclosure. It is only 32.5 inches long and has powder-coated aluminum panels with trigger latches for easy service access. The generator ’s automatic voltage regulator is powered by an auxiliary AC stator winding that isolates it from the main windings. The AVR always has clean power to provide excitation for faster load response and better motor starting. Your air conditioner and other motor driven equipment will love being matched with the 673. A 30 amp AC circuit breaker in the junction box protects your wiring. Safety shutdowns for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature and high exhaust temperature protect your engine. The M673L2 meets US EPA Tier II emission standards. You, your moorage neighbors and the environment will all benefit. 1800 rpm reliability, low emissions, quiet operation and strong motor starting. Good things do come in small packages.

M673LD2

Ask to see most company’s 5kW marine generator sets, and you’ll likely see a light, fairly disposable machine, seemingly built as an afterthought. Not Northern Lights. Our 5kW M673LD2 is built with the careful engineering and meticulously craftsmanship that has defi ned every Northern Lights product for over four decades. Northern Lights starts with a heavy duty base engine. Then our unique marinization process creates a machine specifically designed for the unforgiving rigors of the marine environment. Adding a sturdy generator end creates the most reliable, durable and simple to use marine power solution on the market. The M673LD2 is designed for unmatched reliability. By achieving 5 kilowatts at 1800, instead of 3600 rpm, the revolutions are cut in half. Piston and cylinder wear is minimized. The generator ’s automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is powered by an auxiliary AC stator winding that isolates it from the main windings. This ensures that the AVR has clean power to provide excitation for faster load response. Whether running the refrigerator, air conditioner, or any other accessory, the M673LD2 can make power dips and surges a thing of the past. Comfort is always a consideration when it comes to Northern Lights generator power. The M673LD2 is built on a balanced three cylinder diesel. Four plateform isolation mounts reduce vibration transmission even further. The Sound Maze air intake system is another Northern Lights innovation developed with your comfort in mind. Air enters through a molded rubber hose and an acoustic dampening chamber. This allows for clear air fl ow, with a minimal noise signature. For even greater sound attenuation, your M673LD2 can be equipped with our state of the art sound enclosure. Because the M673LD2 meets all current USEPA emission standards, you can rest assured that your 5kW will be as clean as it is quiet and effi cient.

Featuring new W-Series generator The new W-Series generator end is a major step in our constant quest to give you the best generator set on the market. It features an auxiliary stator winding that supplies separate and stable power to the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). The results are impressive: • Classifi cation society compliance. • Real 300% short circuit capability. • Improved AC circuit breaker performance.See your dealer for more information.

Northern Lights strong reputation for reliability and simplicity is evident on the 8 kW, M753W2. Year in, year out, this bulletproof workhorse has been a favorite for yachtsmen and commercial operators for both repowers and new vessel construction. It has constantly been improved and we are now proud to introduce the newest version; the M753W2. The set is still powered by a 58 cubic inch Lugger diesel which runs at 1800 rpm instead of 3600. Lower speed promotes engine life by reducing internal stresses. The engine has a mono-component, cast iron, freshwater cooling system to reduce troublesome gaskets and hoses. Being a three cylinder, the engine is balanced for smooth operation. This along with vibration isolation mounts, intake silencer system and cast valve cover make the M753W2 remarkably smooth and quiet with or without a sound enclosure. The M753W2 is simple to maintain. All service points are on one side withineasy reach. The seawater pump’s location makes impeller changes a snap and it is gear-driven, so there are no belts to fray and break. The engine’s DC electrical system and safety shutdowns use reliable relays instead of delicate, unrepairable printed circuit boards. If a failure should occur you simply plug in a new, inexpensive relay. The M753W2 meets US EPA Tier II emissions standards. You, the environment and your moorage neighbors will all benefi t.

M843NW2

The M843NW2 is small in size but not in heart. It comes with all the time-tested features you expect on a Northern Lights. A simple, reliable cooling system that minimizes belts, hoses and gaskets. A relay based DC electrical system without expensive printed circuit boards. Single side service accessibility. Crankcase oil vapor trap system and welded drip pan base to keep your engine room as clean as the 843’s white polyurethane paint job. The 843 also plays well with others. Team it up with a larger Northern Lights set. The 843 will shoulder the light load hours and let its big buddy take a rest. Since it only uses 0.62 gph of fuel at half load it will rest your wallet too. This little workhorse takes multi-tasking to a whole new level. Clean, stable electricity out of one end and accessory driving horsepower out the other. All you need is the optional, front power take off and electric clutch. With a touch of a button you will have hydraulic power. No need to start up that main engine just to run a deck winch. Clean inside and out, the M843NW2 meets the US EPA Tier II emission requirements. What more could you ask from a guy that is only two feet tall?

These are the powerhouses that go in vessels that need continuous AC power to operate. Unfortunately, some 20 kW machines have small displacement, light duty diesels that can’t stand up to heavy use. Some even need turbochargers to compensate for their small displacement. The M844LW2 is different. Powered by a naturally aspirated, four cylinder, 2.2 liter (135 cid) Lugger diesel, this set has the low end torque needed to start bigger electric motors without breaking a sweat. The M844LW2 meets US EPA Tier II emission standards to protect the environment you enjoy. Vibration isolation mounts, air intake silencer and cast manifolds make the set remarkably smooth and quiet. A high attenuation sound enclosure is optional. Northern Lights generator sets are simple to operate and maintain. A 20 foot wire harness and control panel lets you operate it from your boat’s bridge. The engine’s DC electrical system uses reliable relays instead of delicate printed circuit boards. If a failure should occur, you can simply plug in an inexpensive relay. All service points are on one side within easy reach. The sea water pump is up front for easy impeller changes. Need hydraulic power? Add an optional electric clutch front PTO. At the touch of a button you have power for your bowthruster and winches without starting your main engine.

Service Side

A big power producer in a little package, the new Northern Lights M944W is ideal for the boater who expects unqualifi ed excellence from his generator set without sacrifi cing valuable engine room space.

Cranking out 30 kW at 60 Hz (1800 rpm), the M944W2 is intended for long life at full load. At more then 3.33 liters, this four cylinder dynamo has the displacement (203 cid) to shoulder the large loads. The generator is driven by a reliable Lugger engine, drawing its strength from an industrial block designed for 2500 max rpm; not the 3600 rpm automotive engine common in the industry. That is the reason that the M944W hits the top of its torque curve at 1800 rpm instead of sliding down the back of it.

The block is impressive, but what makes the M944W so well adapted for the rigors of at-sea use is Northern Lights’ exclusive marinization package. From the cupro-nickle heat exchanger to the bronze/stainless gear driven seawater pump, no detail has been overlooked in engineering a superior marine product. The freshwater cooled exhaust manifold is sturdy cast iron with no dry risers.

The M944W features Northern Lights’ revolutionary W-Series generator end for clean AC output and real short circuit protection. The air fi lter is cast aluminum for quiet operation.

Producing AC is hardly the M944W’s only trick. Add a 90 amp DC alternator and you’ll never run out of battery power again. Add a front PTO with an electric clutch for hydraulic power and drive your winches, bow thrusters or deck gear at the touch of a button.

Reliable, durable, simple to use, and maintain. For nearly 50 years, this has been the hallmark of Northern Lights products. The tradition of excellence continues with the M944W.

THE W-SERIES GENERATORS GIVE YOU REAL WORLD 300% CAPABILITY.

Auxiliary winding for AVR. The new W-Series generators are a majorstep forward in our constant quest to give youthe best generator set on the market.

W-Series generators feature an auxiliarystator winding that supplies separate andstable power to the Automatic VoltageRegulator (AVR). The results are impressive: • Classification society compliance. • Real 300% short circuit capability • Improved AC circuit breaker performance. • No increase in size.

Basic generator set operationIt’s important to understand how most

generator sets make power to fully appreciatethe advantages of the new W-Series sets.

An engine turns the AC generator’s rotorinside of a stationary stator at a given RPM.The rotating magnetic fields between the rotorand stator produce AC electricity. Some ofthis electricity is used to power the set’sautomatic voltage regulator (AVR). Theregulator senses load changes as you turnelectrical appliances on and off. It then sendsDC electrical power to the generator’s exciterwindings. The exciter increases or decreasesthe field of the main rotor to make the powerneeded by the load.

Clean power requirements. The AVR needs stable power from the

main rotor to do its job well. Some components, such as battery

chargers, variable frequency drives and othernonlinear loads can actually corrupt thegenerator’s output waveform.

Starting large electric motors can alsocause problems. When turned off, a motor isin a dead rotor condition. The current neededto overcome the inertia of the dead rotor andstart the motor is called “inrush”. Inrush canoften be many times the power needed to run

power to the exciter degrades. Less excitationmeans less power from the main outputfurther degrading the power supply to theAVR...a cascade or loop effect is created.

A main line short circuit is the ultimatepower supply problem for the AVR. Thepower drawn by the short leaves no electric-ity to power the AVR so it stops powering theexcitor windings. In milliseconds themagnetic field between the stator and rotorcollapses. No electricity is being made. Youare now standing in the dark while thegenerator set is still running and the mainlinecircuit breaker has not tripped.

Why didn’t the circuit breaker trip? If you have a mild short circuit, the

breaker may have time to respond and it maytrip. However, when a dead short occurs, thefield collapses so fast that there isn’t time forthe circuit breaker to respond. That is whythe circuit breaker on your generator set hasprobably never tripped.

Why do some generator manufacturersput circuit breakers on their sets? Becauseindustry councils recommend they do it. Themanufacturer follows the guidelines eventhough they know it is of little practical use.

Classification RequirementsMarine classification societies set

standards for equipment used on vessels.Only the largest vessels are built to “Class”,having been built, inspected and approved tohave met the classification standards. Manyowners of vessels do not need this level ofquality assurance. They do, however, wantthe best equipment, so they specify generatorsets that have a society Type Approval. Thisincreases the value of their vessel and theirpeace of mind. Northern Lights generatorsets from 4.5 to 33 kW have proudly held aLloyds’ Type Approval since 1999.

W-Series auxiliary windingsupplies clean power to AVR

“8.4.5 Generators and their voltageregulation systems are to be capable ofmaintaining, without damage, understeady state short circuit conditions acurrent of at least three times the fullload rated current for a duration of atleast two seconds...”

Lloyd’s Register of Shipping Rules and regulations for the classifica- tion of special service craft, July 2002

the motor after it is started. This is why somegenerator sets slow and the lights dim when amotor is turned on. This is called voltage dip.

An AVR being powered by corruptedpower or voltage that “dips, surges and sags”can become part of a cascade of problems.Weakened by a bad power supply the AVRdoesn’t react well to new load demands. It’s

W Series sends clean power to the AVRTo solve these problems the W-Series

generators have a special auxiliary windingto power the AVR. The winding is com-pletely separate from the main statorwindings and is not affected by load changesand power corruption. It’s only job is toprovide stable power to the AVR. Thisgreatly enhances its ability to regulate themain output power. The AVR is alwaysready to respond to the large load increaseneeded to start motors. Even under a directshort circuit condition the AVR will continueto provide excitation support until the circuitbreaker trips breaking the connection. This istrue, real world 300% capability.

No size increase.W-Series generators are the same

compact size as the K-Series they replace.Boatbuilders will not need to modify theirengine rooms to accommodate the new sets.

300% short circuit capabilityMarine classification societies including

Lloyds, ABS, DNV, BV, and the USCGrequire that the generator on a boat built to“class” have 300% short circuit capability. This means the generator end can withstand ashort circuit that increases its amperage outputthree times its rated capacity for a specifiedperiod of seconds without the magnetic fieldcollapsing and without sustaining damage.

Want true 300% capability? In the past you had to specify a permanent

magnet generator (PMG) or a current boostsystem. These work well on larger sets. LargeNorthern Lights sets have PMGs as standardor optional equipment. Now, the W-Seriesoffers true 300% short circuit capability toowners of sets from 8 to 33 kW. These setswill meet the requirements for owners who arebuilding “Class” vessels.

Don’t be confused by “capability” claims. If a generator manufacturer claims 300%

short circuit “capability” ask what that means. Will their set actually produce 300% of ratedcurrent until the breaker responds? Or is it atheoretical “capability” meaning that thegenerator would not be damaged if it produced300%, which it can’t, because the magneticfield collapses first. This is akin to saying;“Yes, our car would pass a crash test, if wecould get it to run long enough to hit the wall”

The Skewed Stator.

The stator is handwound by experiencedcraftsmen. The winder’seyes are a constantquality control check. The skewed design(angled grooves) makeselectricity with a clean, symmetrical waveform that electrical equipment needs.

The stator is encased in a strong, rolledsteel generator frame which has machinedends to mate with the cast iron bearinghousing and SAE housing adapter.

Bearing Housing & Exciter Stator.

The bearing housing is cast iron, notaluminum. Iron isstronger, resistselectrolysis andhas a thermalexpansion ratethat more closelymatches thebearing on therotor. This helpsto prevent “spun bearing” failures thatplague aluminum housings.

We bolt the exciter stator in the remov-able bearing housing for easy access. Some generators have the exciter weldedto the frame making it unreplaceable.

1 Phase Standard – 3 Optional.

Standard PX-300W generators are1 phase, 4 wire. If you need 3 phasepower, order your set with an optional12 wire generator end.

The Leader Uses Leads.

Some manufacturers use the solidcopper magnet wire to connect the set tothe load. “Leadless” design is cheaper butprone to failure from vibration. We usemulti-strand wire leads with high tem-perature insulation. These leads go to aterminal strip in the junction box for easyconnection to your AC electrical system.

Paralleling the big boys.

The M844LW2, M864W and M984Wmodels have 2/3 winding pitch so theycan be easily paralleled with the largerNorthern Lights sets. This makes thempart of your total power solution.

First the K, Now the W.

In 1998 we introduced the K-Serieswhich increased generator performancewithout increasing size. Six years of dutyhave shown the K generators to be nearlybullet proof. The new W-Series is basedon this proven design and is the next stepin the ongoing development of superiorgenerator ends from Northern Lights.

W-Series will be phased into produc-tion on all marine and industrial NorthernLights, 60 and 50 Hz sets, 8 to 33 kW.

Auxiliary Winding To Power The AVR.

An auxiliary stator winding makesdedicated power for the new DST-100-2FAK automatic voltage regulator. This gives you several advantages.

• Classification society compliance. • Real 300% short circuit capability • Improved AC breaker performance.See the back of this page for a detailedexplanation of this feature.

Automatic Voltage Regulator = 1% RMS.

The solid state AVR produces clean±1% RMS voltage regulation from noload to full load. This protects electronicsand extends motor life. Compare this to±1.5% or ±5% of competitive generators.

The AVR also allows the generator toproduce 50 or 60 hertz power at 100 or200 class voltage. Boatbuilders: you useone set for domestic and foreign markets.

High Copper Content. One thing we didn’t change was the

amount of copper in the generator. Highcopper content gives higher performance.

• Better generator efficiency.• More motor starting capability.• Longer life. The PX-300Ws have a

conservative 95°C temperature rise ratingat 50°C ambient air. Compare this to the105/40 or even 125/50 ratings used bysome manufacturers.

Hot DrippedRotor.

The rotoris made up ofa shaft, largesealedbearing (A),an easilyaccessiblerotating rectifier (B), a large diameterexciter rotor (C) and main rotor (D). Therotor assembly is slowly hot dripped withhigh quality, Class “H” epoxy insulation forprotection against the marine environment.
