THOMAS HART,

THE great aneestor of the Hart family in the United States,

emigrated from ·London about A. D. 1690, and settled in:

Hanover County, Virginia, where he died, leaving an only son,

Thomas Hart, who was about eleven years of age when his father

arrived in Virginia. Of the elder Thomas Hart little is known,

except that he was a merchant, and probably, late in life a blind man.

Thomas Hart, the son, married Susanna Rice, of Hanover, the

aunt of the Rev. Daniel Rice, (?f the Presbyterian Church, who

settled in Kentucky m the year 1781. Thomas Hart, Jr., died in

Hanover about the year 1755, leaving six

CHILDREN,

Thomas, John, Benjamin, David, Nathaniel, and Ann, all of whom,

with their mother, migrated to Orange County, North Carolina,

NATHANIEL HART'S DESCENDANTS.

NATHANIEL HART, fifch son of Thomas Hart, of Hanover,

Virginia, and Susannah Rice, was horn in 173-!, and at an early age

removed with his mother tq North Carolina. In 1760 he married

Sarah Simpson, daughter of Col. Richard Simpson and Miss Kinch

elo, living near .Alexmndria, Virginia, and resided at his county seat,

the Red House, in Caswell county, North Carolina, until his removal

to Kentucky in 1779.

In 1760 Capt. Hart commanded a company for the suppression of

an insurrection which threatened the overthrow of the government,

_and for his bravery, while in the discharge of the arduous and haz

arduous undertaking, was handsomely co~plimented by the officers

of the government.

In 1785 he was instrumental in forming a company, consisting of

himself, two brothers-Thomas Hart and David Hart-with three

other gentlemen, for the purchase of Transylvania from the Indians,

which purchase was secured to them by an act of the General .Assem

lhly of Virginia in 1778.

Capt. Hart continued to reside near Boonesboro, Kentucky, where

his family had been protected from the Indians, until 178~, when he

was killed by them, riding out near the fort. 1 Capt. Hart was not scalped, as erroneously stated in the History of

Kentucky, his children having affirmed the contrary, nor did his mur

derers escape. They were overtaken by their pursuers, and the shoe and

knee buckles they bad taken from the body of Capt. Hart recovered._

T_hese relics are now in the possession of his great grandson, Richard

Hart Shaw, residing near Horn Lake, DeSoto county, 1\1:issis;;ippi.
