“Gender, media and your farmer program.”Society is always involved in the permanent process of classification and categorization. “Everything for a place, and a place for everything”, so says a school of thought. This continuous process brings along with it the controversial concept and process of labeling, boxing, grouping and even naming. We are made to identify ourselves and others according to these worrying tagging of nomenclature. Here comes the issue of gender.

My program, “FARMERS VOICE” seeks to be the platform that provides the opportunity for farmers and people related to agriculture to tell their stories, ask their questions and come up with their suggestions and contributions. This is done by given equal time and opportunity to farm related players who are human beings first. A 50/50 paneling is the first step. On the program, female mentors are used to provide encouragement to other women in all levels of agriculture. Steps are also taken to ensure women get involved in the phone in segments. Gender issues are also issues of culture and tradition of a people. It is therefore very important and must be handled carefully especially by the media. Adequate research is and would always be done to seek the interest, safety, concerns and perspectives of women in agriculture.

Programs to be aired would be tailored towards the following topics,

Women in Agricultural Development (WIAD) activities. Disability in women farmers. Relying on women and children for information. Concerns for/of the marginalized. Use of appropriate gender language. Enhancing income generating activities. Creating songs and role plays that enhance farming activities. Equal education for all. (women and men)

Finally, my program ensures that all players are treated fairly and equally without any recourse to their sex, sexually belonging or sexual orientation.

Thank you all. KWAMEE KWAME.
