GENDER DISCRIMINATION
WHAT DOES GENDER DISCRIMINATION MEAN ?
The unfair treatment based on his or her gender, especially against women. Gender discrimination can apply most commonly in the workplace. Gender discrimination in the workplace includes words or actions that show a difference in behavior towards someone of the opposite sex. And this action is absolutely against the law
EXAMPLES OF BEHAVIOUR
Women are less paid then men Women don’t get promotions in the
workplace Dividing up work tasks based on male or
female staff Requiring women wear different clothing
to men, short skirts Not considering women in a particular
position at work
DIRECT INDIRECT Direct
discrimination is treating someone differently because of their sex in some obvious ways.
Indirect discrimination is treating everyone the same, but when this same treatment is actually indirectly has an unfair effect on a particular group of people.
EXAMPLES When a manager limits
an employee because she is pregnant.
Where only the female employees are expected to get the coffee and collect the boss’s dry cleaning.
A manager refuses to employ someone just because they are a woman.
The height requirement. Which might discriminate against women.
The requirement to wear certain clothing.
A manager requiring all their employees to work full-time.
IMPLICATIONS OF THIS BEHAVIOUR
Women won’t get promoted in the workplace Can lead to violence against women, sexual
harassment and even rape in the workplace Discrimination could be very stressful for
women
WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN ?I think it happens because of the differences in
male and female bodies and behaviors. Males are typically stronger, bigger, taller, and more aggressive than females. And also because female gets pregnant while men won’t.
An example of what people think back then that the duty of father is to provide money and women are tend to raise their children at home and cooking. But it’s all wrong, because they have to raise their
children together, and women also
has their rights to have a career.
WHERE DOES THIS LAW APPLY ?
Sex discrimination act 1984
This Act protects people from unfair treatment on the basis of their sex, also pregnancy and breastfeeding.
They also act to overcome discrimination, sexual harassment, and violence against women
And people who experience direct or indirect discrimination can complain to this Commission.
WHO IS AT RISK ?Is men and women. But mostly is women.
PREVENTING GENDER DISCRIMINATION
Even though gender discrimination in the workplace still clearly exists, but there has been much improvement recently. And we can prevent discrimination with these ways : Equal pay for equal work Managers should not use gender as a reason for doing a job Treat everyone in the workplace fairly with respect Uniform policies for male and female employees Make sure all employees follow the anti-discrimination policies
in the workplace Hiring staff based on their qualifications not based on their
gender It is also recommended that managers give proper training to
their employees about gender discrimination
