So to get the most done in the easiest way with the best outcome, the “intergenerational” game needs to be played.
Traditionalists (the Silent Generation):
Generations – what are they?

Born: 1927 – 1945, over 68As at May 2013: 425,200 in the work force
• Work ethic: Hardworking and loyal, single job• Work culture: From depression – cherish their job• Way to work: Team players, in-person interaction, face
to face, meetings, lectures, little or no technology
What is important: Respect, tradition.
Baby Boomers:
Generations – what are they?

Born: 1946 – 1964, 49 - 67As at May 2013: 4,134,200 in the work force
• Work ethic: Loyal, work-centric, cynical – many changes• Work culture: Salaries, long hours, title = success• Way to work: Competition and challenges
What is important: High levels of responsibility, perks, praise and challenges.
Generation X:

What is important: Diversity, challenge, entrepreneurial
Born: 1965 – 1980, 33 - 48As at May 2013: 2,603,000 in the work force• Work ethic: Ambitious, hardworking, w/l balanced,
independent – seen burnout of their parents• Work culture: Flexible requirements, schedules, and
work hours• Way to work: Hands off attitude, work alone, no
meetings
Millennials (Generation Y):
Generations – what are they?

What is important: Attention, creative challenges, personal growth
Born: 1981 – 1994, 19 - 32As at May 2013: 3,853,200 in the work force
• Work ethic: Seeks meaningful careers and attach to mentors not organisations – “pampering parents”
• Work culture: Multitasking, highly technological, fast, immediate, high level of communications
• Way to work: Be involved, “Facebook” work style, flexible tech environment
Generation Z:
Generations – what are they?

• 1995 – 2009• 687,600 in May 2013 workforce• Never experienced the pre-internet world
Generation Alpha:• 2010 and later• More formally educated• Older, wealthier parents - materialistic
Traditionalists:
What does this mean – in working with:

For the Baby Boomers• Respect their experience• Respect their company• Don’t be cynical
For Generation X• Meet with them face to face• Set & meet timeframes• Work with them, not alone
• Slow down• Avoid techno-stuff• Request / not expect feedback
For Millennials
Baby Boomers:

For Generation X• Manage the expected hours• Deliver as promised• Meet with them face to face
• Negotiate the work times• Arrange time for feedback• Be patient with technology
