GEMATRIA IN SCRIPTURE • Gematria and Numbers Charts I n additi on to the stu dy of th e symbolic s ignific ance of num bers i n Scripture i s the study of the numbers formed by the letters of words themselves, which is known by the Greek word gematria. Th is is th e study of th e words formed of letters of the alphabet used a s nu mber fig ures. Th e Hebrews, Greek s, Romans, and many other ancient peo ples used their alphabe ts for numbers. In their alphabe ts the letters are used for numbers with the v alue corresponding to the place i n th e alphabet. Th e Hebrews used all 22 letters of their alphabet plus 5 finals. Th e Greeks used the 24 letter alphabet and 3 add itional finals. Th e Romans only u sed 6 letters o f their alphabet a nd their combinations to form numbers: I= 1, V = 5, X = 10 , L = 50, C = 10 0, D = 500. The number 1,000 was formed by tw o D's (combined to form an M like figure). By adding up th e valu es of comp onen t letters of a p erson's name, for example, th e total yields the "number of a p erson's name." Th e Apostle Jo hn , writing during th e time of the first grea t Roman persecution of Christians, recorde d i n th e Bo ok o f Rev elations 13:18 th at the n um ber o f th e Beast was 666 a nd th at this nu mber was the n umber of a hu man bei ng. Most anci ent MSS (hand- written m anu scrip ts) of the book of Revel ation reco rd 66 6 as th is sig nificant n um ber wh ile others manu scrip ts record the nu mber as 616. I s i t a coi ncidence that all th e Roman numeral added together total 666 (excluding the symbol for 1,000 which was not a separa te lett er/ n umber but t wo "D"= 500 p lace back to back)? Is it also a coincidence th at the gematria for Neron Caesa r (an altern ate Hebrew sp ellin g o f the E mperor's name in wide use i n th e 1 st centu ry AD) totals 666 wh ile the Greek spe ll ing of Nero Caesa r totals 616? Si x is the nu mber of the beasts and of man (both created on th e 6 th day). It is also the number which is s y mbolic of man's nature to rebel ag ainst the law of God. The total of the numbers is 666. The total of the Roman numbers is 666 [the "M" for1,000 is two "Ds" back to back; there are only 6 Roman numerals]. 666 is the number ofthe Beast. Caesar was Rome and Rome was Caesar and Caesar claimed to be a god.
The word for "god" in Greek is theos. Caesar god is Caesar (or in Greek, kaisar)theos. The gematria is:

666 is a trinity of 6s; never to be a 76 is the number of man, especially as man in rebellion against God:
Goliath was 6 cubits and a span (1 Samuel 17:4)King Nebuchadnezzar erected a statue of himself to beworshipped. It was 60 cubits high and 6 cubits across (Daniel
3:1)
The number 7, however, represents perfection, fullness and completion'especiallyperfection through the work of the Holy Spirit. In Revelation 19:16 there are 2 titles forChrist which St. John reveals to us form one "name." Is he telling us to add the words

together to determine the gematria of the titles? The gematria of "King of kings, Lord oflords" in Aramaic (leaving out the "and") equals 777'a trinity of perfection in contrast tothe Beast's number 666 which will never achieve perfection. And the gematria forJESUS in Greek, the language of the New Testament documents is a trinity of 8's, thenumber representing rebirth, regeneration, and salvation:
