Summer boating season is officially in full swing. Everyday the Reservoir is host towater skiers, jet skiers, fisher-men and boaters, all of whomare there to enjoy the benefitsof the lake. While the majorityof these people are in the knowabout the lake’s idle zones, speed limit, and shallow areas, many are not aware of thebehind the scenes group assembled to make the lake asafe place for those whoemploy its use. The Geist LakeCoalition has been the back-bone of many events that havetaken place on the lake for thepast 10 years, and according toits mission statement, works topromote courteous and safeboating on Geist Lake as wellas be a source of informationfor local and transient boaters.
The Geist Lake Coalition wasformerly part of the GeistHarbours Property OwnersAssociation (GHPOA) LakeCommittee. After more lake-front neighborhoods weredeveloped and the communitygrew outside of the original
GHPOA boundaries, aCoalition was formed to takecare of specific needs concern-ing the lake. Now the groupfocuses not only on theirGHPOA neighbors, but alsoany neighborhood with lake-front properties. The membersare a cross section of all home-owners associations in the area, and according to CoalitionPresident Brian Hall, there aretwelve to sixteen core members, which include GailMcDowell and Amy Roesler. Also regularly in attendance arethe Department of NaturalResources (DNR), theLawrence Township andFishers Fire Departments, EPAAgencies, and the MarinaLimited Partnership. “We haveboard members and officers, but our membership is alsoopen to concerned home-owners,” said Hall. “Our meetings are open to the public, and all are welcome.”

Autism is a medical conditionthat has been misunderstood bymany for years. As said byGiham Ramadan of the ArabNews, “Imagine you were in aforeign, noisy and crowded cityat night, not understanding thelanguage spoken, recognizing a few words but not reallycomprehending situations taking place around you, wanting to express a need forhelp but not being able. Thisexperience may begin to helpyou relate to what a child withautism feels on an ordinaryday.”
As the third most commondevelopmental disorder, newdevelopments are being madethat can educate the communi-ty. Working toward this goal ofpublic understanding is Geistresident Patty Reed, who is thevice president of this year's
“Answers for Autism Walk.”
This autism fundraiser, whichis in its fifth year, became ofgreat interest to Patty after sheread about it in the newspaper.Patty has a daughter who isautistic, and she chose to getinvolved with the cause aftermeeting with event organizersand realizing what a “greatevent” it was. “This is a goodway for families with autisticchildren to meet each other,”she said. “It is nice to know weare not alone.”
In the past, the money raisedhas gone to various autismfoundations, businesses, andcauses in the area. “Our goal isto increase people's knowledgeof autism,” Patty said. For thatreason, informative videotapeshave been provided to everylibrary in Indianapolis. Money

involved with the efforts of theCoalition. “We want moreneighborhoods, and we want toget the bass boaters,” saidVillanyi. “We are looking tounify the lake and want anyonewith common concerns to getinvolved.”
Rodgers says that the focusnow, as in the past, is safetyconcerns. “Our goal is safety, consideration, and involve-ment,” he said. And theCoalition is also quick to promote the idea that it wantsthe lake to be enjoyed by all,not simply those with water-front homes. “This Coalition isnot an elitist group,” Rodgerssaid. “We want to be a unifyingorganization that represents alltypes of people.” The group, which considers itself a “stew-ard of the lake,” encourages allthings safety-related. Membersteamed up with the Fishers Fire
Department and CaptainClinton Crafton to raise moneyfor a fire and safety boat to useon Geist. After fundraising, enough money was raised toput the $67,000 boat into useon the lake. “This has had a big impact on the lake,” saidHall. “It has been especiallyhelpful in light of recent events on the lake, such as therecovery of the man (LarryJohnson) who drowned.”
One event all Geist residentscan thank the Coalition for isthe fireworks show put onevery Fourth of July. Hall estimates that while there areabout 780 homes on the lake, almost 4,000 people were inattendance for the fireworksdisplay. “I think this year’sshow was the best yet,” saidVillanyi.
The Coalition’s role in the
fourth’s festivities is raisingenough money for the show totake place. While each yearbrings the hope of putting on abigger and better show, it isindividuals who donate thatmake the difference. Changeshave been made in past yearsthat now offer residents a 360degree view of the show, andVillanyi feels that the show issafer now that it is performedoff of the island near AdmiralsSound. “Every dollar we raisegoes to the professional fire-works company,” Hall said.“The money goes to improvingthe show to make it better.”With an increase in the budgetevery year to better the display, the Coalition seeks monetarysupport from outside sources.“So far, we have been lucky,”said Rogers. “This is a functionto which people can con-tribute.”
Future issues the Coalitionhopes to tackle involve safetyissues for boaters. “We hope todeal with water quality andstumps in the water that canharm boats,” said Hall.Members also feel that educa-tion about the rules of the lake, such as where idle zones andmarkers are located, is veryimportant. “We have freedomon the lake,” said Rodgers.“There is not a lot of bureau-cracy, and we wish to preservethat.” Villanyi sees inexperi-ence as a huge contributor toaccidents on the lake. He saysthat statistics have shown thatwith seventy to eighty percentof accidents, the operator of thevessel has had less than twohours of experience on the ves-sel. “We really want to raiseawareness of this, and we feeleducation is key,” said Hall. While blaming another entity

Coalition membersrecommend classes put on atthe Yacht Club, as well asDNR safety classes and schoolprograms in the local counties.“There are many things outthere available to the public, and we just need to make themaware,” said Hall.
Now, it is up to Geist residentsto get involved. The Geist LakeCoalition meets the secondTuesday of the month in a con-ference room near the Marinaboat sales office. The meetingsbegin at 7:00 pm and are opento the public. “I got involvedbecause this is a great commu-nity,” said Hall. Our Fathers Day Trip to theGreat American Ballpark inCincinnati was a great time forall. Most were Reds fans, whileothers just wanted to spend aday with dad away from homewith their Geist neighbors.
Sponsors Stacey and DougKiernan with Homerun Realtypassed out some t-shirts as wedeparted the Java Jar parkinglot on our charter bus. MarcusMoore brought his son MarcusJr. and sported his new t-shirtas the temperatures hoveredaround 80° all day.
In addition to my family,Crossing South was well-represented with Eric andMike Stevenson. Jay Cox ofAdmirals Bay brought his wifeElaine and his parents, Bob andEldonna Cox, drove down fromToledo for the trip. Perhaps thecutest couple award went to Joe andPeggy Scher, both avid Redsfans and Fishers residents.
The ballgame itself was a greatbaseball game to watch. We satin right field in the sun deckand had a great view of the
game, the scoreboard, and easyaccess to the concessions andrestrooms. This was my fami-ly’s first time to Cincinnati’snew ballpark and we wereimpressed to say the least.
If you follow the Reds, youhave my sympathies this year. The Atlanta Braves had beatenthe Reds the previous threegames and the Reds were 0-6in their previous six games.
Their luck changed on FathersDay. Blame it on our bus driv-er, Hugh Selleck, who broughthis daughter Brittany along andenjoyed the game with us. TheReds won on an eighth inninghomerun to our section by KenGriffey, Jr. which was caughtby a guy sitting only 5 rowsahead of me. Wondering when the FallCreek bridge construction willfinally be complete? TimBussell, Project Manager, saysthat he can “almost see theend. If the weather is decent, then hopefully we can progressquite nicely through Phase IIand III by end of summer and be complete byearly fall.” Very soon, look fortraffic to be switched to thenew section. Once the projectis complete, the bridge will bewidened to four lanes separat-ed by a median. A pedestrianwalkway will be added adjacent to the southboundlanes, and guardrails for bothmotorists and pedestrians willincrease safety. To improve thetraffic flow, the intersectionjust south of the reservoir willbe realigned. Carroll Road willtee into Fall Creek Road/ 96thStreet, and turning lanes willbe added to both Fall Creekand 96th Street. For more

Other attractionsinclude the T-6 group, which ismade of military trainers fromWWII, as well as a father-sonduo that walks the wing of aWaco. Almost a dozen aviationgroups will be performing, each promising its own tricksand entertainment.
“This is a really great familyactivity,” said DanielleRobinson of Indy Aero.Families are encouraged tospend the day at the airport andenjoy all that the event encompasses. Planes will be ondisplay, military re-enactors

Losing a pet is a grievanceonly those who have beenthrough it can understand. Tomany, a pet is an irreplaceablefamily member, and the deathof that pet evokes feelings ofsorrow. While the road torecovery may seem long, thereto help you through that sorrowis Jeff Weitzel of Peaceful PetsCrematory, Inc. He runs a business aimed to help petowners remember theirdeceased companion and beginthe healing process.
“We love our pets,” Jeff said.“We are very attached to them, and we treat them like ourkids.” This love of animals hasinspired Jeff and his wife toopen two separate businessescatered to their animal friends. His wife owns and operatesBone a Fido, a dog bakery, inIndianapolis. Jeff witnessed the
success of that venture anddecided, along with his son-in-law, to open a pet crematoryinstead of retiring. He converted his constructionbusiness into the crematorium, and Peaceful Pets opened inJanuary of 2005.
The idea behind Peaceful PetsCrematorium is to help griev-ing pet owners by making thewhole experience more person-al and respectful. Jeff has beenthrough the process of losing apet, and he remembershow tough it is.“My wife and I putdown a pet, andwhen we got theashes back threeweeks later, itopened the woundsagain.” For this reason, Jeffmakes a point to return theashes to the family within three
business days. He also person-ally cremates the pets, and hehas a tagging system thatguarantees the ashes do not getmixed up or lost. “It is a nightmare to pet owners tohave their pet’s ashes lost,” Jeff said. His cremation unit is thoroughly swept out afterevery service. “I want to tellthe pet owners exactly how it isdone,” he said. “They can evencome in and watch, which isunlike any other place.” Healso wants people to know that
a staff person is oncall twenty-fourhours a day socustomers canreach him at anytime, and there is
same or next busi-ness day pick-up.
In addition to this process,Peaceful Pets Cremation has a
wide array of urns in which theashes can be kept. Jeff sees thisas a better alternative to simplyburying the pet in the backyardbecause of the possibility thefamily might move. The complementary urn is anacrylic box, but other modelsinclude those in the shape ofrocks and crosses. The familywill also receive “RainbowBridge,” a poem geared towardgrieving pet owners, a certificate of cremation, and apersonal note from the Weitzelfamily. “This is a sad thing, butit has to be done,” Jeff said.“Overall, we just want everypet owner to be completely satisfied and know we treatedhis pet with love and respect.”

You are in the right mindset, have perfect alignment, and areprepared to swing. You looktoward the fairway and bringyour club back, ready to delivera powerful hit that will wowthe crowd. Yet, somehow, thehit wasn’t quite what you hadimagined. Instead of that force-ful drive you had pictured, youhave committed one of golf’smost notorious crimes: slicing. Here to lend his advice is ScottMorris, a golf pro at GrayEagle with over forty years ofgolfing experience to his name.
Scott offers private instructionsfull time on Gray Eagle’s golfcourse. Because he runs thejunior program, he says he getsa lot of younger clients, butScott is able to take on a totalarray of ages and abilities. “Ienjoy teaching anyone whogets it,” he said. “I like seeingthat light bulb go off.” He
offers to his beginners tips hehas seen help others over theyears. “I tell them that beforethey practice, they should takea lesson,” he said. “Otherwisethey are practicing getting bet-ter at what they might be doingwrong.” Scott says he also seeslots of people with poor align-ment and posture. Yet he citesslicing as the biggest problemfor golfers. “Some people justtry to hit it too hard, and theresulting mistake is topping, orslicing, the ball.” He workswith his clients to correct thesecommon mistakes, which setsthem on the road to a bettergolf game.
Beginners are not the onlygolfers Scott lends his adviceto. He has had professionalscome in occasionally “to pickthe brains of various pros.”These golfers include RandyNichols and Soon Ko, whom
Scott calls very accomplished. While they do not come in on aregular basis, they like to havesomeone look at their gameand offer advice they may bemissing from other pros.
Above all, Scott says that theadvice his father gave himyears ago still rings true. “Iwould go back too far, thinkingI would generate more power,”he said. “What he would drillinto my head was: why are youin such a big hurry to hit a badshot?” He keeps this in mindnot only in his own game but also when advising his students.
Scott still has sessions avail-able, and he adds that GrayEagle is open twelve months ayear. It offers an 18-holecourse, a driving range, a fullpractice facility, a custom fitting and repair shop, an
indoor putting green, and videogolf simulators. According toScott, “if you want anything todo with golf, come here!”

Indy Ski School On Geist Offers Wakeboarding As Well As Skiingby Kimberly Laughlin
Summer brings people to thewater, and if you are tired ofwatching everyone else displaytheir skiing skills on the lake, maybe a visit to the Indy SkiSchool is in order. Owner
Derek Dechert has been skiingsince he was a little boy andhas lots of experience on thewater, which enables him tobetter teach his students. Whilethe majority of the people heteaches are beginners, Dereksays anyone from someone whowants to learn to someone whosimply wants to improve histechniques is eligible. In orderto give me a first hand impres-sion of what a day of lessons islike, Derek, along with ScottCochran and Brandon Lawler, took myself and my friendHaley Roubicek out on Geistwhere he attempted to teach usbeginners how to wakeboard.
For this second year of busi-ness, Derek offers lessons at$200 for four days or $100 anhour for private lessons. He iscurrently booked for the monthof July, and on the day he tookus on his boat, he had four kids
along with him whom werelearning the ropes of water ski-ing and wakeboarding. QuintinHunkin, one of the students, offered to us wakeboardingadvice he had acquired over theweek: “The hardest part is turning the board, but keepyour arms straight and bendyour knees.” Jessie Ingram, another ski student, said thatshe found it difficult tokeep control of the skisbut that it gets easierafter the first turn. They, along with their siblings Austin Hunkinand Tim Ingram, wereending their weeklonglessons with the Ski School and had noth-ing but good things tosay about their experience. “Weall had fun, and we learned alot,” said Jessie. In fact, Dereksays that he enjoys teachingyounger kids the most because
he can see their improvement.“I just tell them to be patientand have fun,” he said. “I saydon’t fight it, and then it will befun for you.”After the kids were finished, itwas time for our lesson. Armedwith advice from the Hunkins,Ingrams, and Derek, Haley andI took a shot at wakeboarding.Remembering to let the boat
pull us into position and to turnthe board once we got up,Haley and I were able to ridefor several seconds, which wasa big feat for us considering ourlack of coordination and experience with the sport! Thiswas mainly thanks to the polethat extends from the side ofthe boat, used for beginners, that aids in teaching wakeboarders the ropes beforeboarding the “real” way.Regardless, Derek, Brandon, and Scott were able and patientteachers who made the day agreat experience. We had agreat time leaning from thepros!
