T he Presentation afternoon for the Senior Citizens' Art show was held in the Rene Sutherland Studio on

Friday 2nd October, when approximately 40 attended. As always, the afternoon was in the capable hands of

Colin Mockett, who along with Shirley Power, provided some light entertainment before the presentation of prizes, jointly by our President Nick Karakasch and Hinga Fletcher - a representative of City of Greater Geelong - our major sponsor. Nick also introduced a representative from Australian Unity, who are also sponsoring our Seniors Art Show for the next 5 years..

This year, the judge was Elaine D'Esterre, who was unable to be present on the afternoon of the presentations but is to be thanked for the time and effort she put into the judging.

A thank-you also to our other sponsors who support the Seniors Art Show every year:- Artworx, Bearlooms Picture Framing, Cavalier Art Supplies, Frame Factory, Frameline, and Lynette Palmer.

The winner of the entrance prize was Marion Smyth, and Lloyd Owen was the winner of the raffle. I wish to thank all GAS members who provided a delicious afternoon tea and assisted in so many ways. Roma Burge

O ur GAS on Show Exhibition was the best we have ever had at the Geelong Show. The standard of art displayed

was excellent and the stage display this year featured the GAS printmakers.

This year our exhibition was listed in the show guide booklet distributed to the show attendees; there was a steady stream of visitors to our exhibition during the four days of the show.

This annual event is a wonderful way of advertising our Art Society and a lovely way of sharing time with other GAS members and those visiting our exhibition.

Several GAS members participated in GAS on Show for the first time while a number of others were unable to take part due to family commitments.

We displayed sixty eight framed works, (paintings and prints) and twenty one unframed works. Four framed works were sold, a commission was made for a print, and a further sale of an unframed work is anticipated. Cards were also sold at GAS on Show.

Our thanks to all who contributed to GAS on Show in one way or another.

Thanks are extended to Lisa Wang for spending her time on duty face-painting the children. Also thanks to Ian Duncan, Noel McMillan and Doug Burnett for transporting display screens, easels and other equipment to the showgrounds and returning them to the Shearers Arms at the conclusion of the show.

UPDATE FROM THE PRESIDENT

T he Seniors Festival show, 27th September to 31st October was a great success and the opening day

presentation and afternoon tea was well supported and enjoyed by all.

The Geelong Show, 15th to 18th October was blessed by good weather and although I was unable to attend due to being in hospital, I understand it was also very successful.

November begins with an exciting exhibition of Andrew Whiting and Elisa Petroska’s work, after this we will be hosting the annual VCE exhibition. This will be

the 7th year of the VCE and we are proud to be a part of this important event for the young emerging artists of Geelong, do not miss this great exhibition.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Friendship Group and all the members who have passed on their best wishes to myself and Michele for a speedy recovery from our recent operation/fractured foot and the condolences for our family loss, it is comforting to know that there is so much support available.

THE ARCHIBALD AT BALLARAT by Janet Baird

O n October 5th I travelled by bus with the Geelong Gallery Grasshoppers to view the Archibald entries in Ballarat. Even if, like

me, you are not a portrait artist this exhibition is a must see, more dramatic than I had expected.

We will all be familiar with the story behind the winner's portrait of 'his' judge - not a comfortable painting, very tall, black with piercing goggle glasses in a white face and white claw hands. What a contrast to colourful Jenny Keys with her trademark red framed glasses which is reproduced on the posters.

There is a very wide range of techniques and manner of presentation, from so realistic and in your face that the flesh looks alive to so impressionistic that you need to stand right back for the face to emerge out of the strong strokes of surprising colour.

Eyes follow you everywhere. Beards are popular, indigenous subjects are represented, there were several collages, cartoon approaches are unusually effective, one with Chinese text, one entry comprised small versions of the subject, unusual styles intrigue while some subjects emerge very subtly from black velvet backgrounds.

One of my favourites is the final portrait of an elderly lady on her death bed. The expression is perfect - calm, dignified acceptance yet suggesting so much more. In virtually all of the paintings technique is secondary to the interpretation of the artist's emotional response to the subject.

The excellent portrait of Michael Caton which won the packing room prize was also the people's choice in Sydney. It will be interesting to see which is favourite in Ballarat. Janet Baird

TONY’S TOUR, TO THE GRAMPIANS was held 11th to 15th October

article by Gregor Wallace

F ifteen folk made the journey; with Tony Bramwell as driver, organiser, raconteur, cook, mentor and tutor it was a memorable

one. Accommodation at Halls Gap Log Cabins was excellent, and the kangaroo lawnmowers did a great job every night.

Weather was great for plein-air work, the walking was comfortable for most, and subjects were abundant. Light was always changing, mountain vistas, clouds, buildings, pebbles in iced-tea clear pools, delicate wildflowers and birds competed for attention

For added inspiration we visited James McMurtrie Glass Blowing Studios at Pomonal, and Steve Morvell Wildlife Art studio and gallery in Halls Gap. Both artists have international reputations for excellence. Both destinations are recommended. Type those names into your favourite search engine and share our experiences.

Some very good work was done, new friends were made, great company was shared, quoits and Scrabble were played and a little wine was imbibed, and the reputation of Tony’s Tours even further established. Look out for the distinctive and desirable blue ‘bucket’ hats. I think that most of us put on a little weight.

Gregor Wallace.
