Where did we go wrong?? We went from being in love to hating each other!! Youhave taken so many of our friends andfamily away in so little time. Why?? Is it because, you like to see us in pain?? Is because, you love to see silent cries of amother burying her child??!! Is it be-cause' you are secretly washing away our black community? I see jealousy erasingall of young lives. Its sad that when I wasgrowing up the saying " life is too short" basically meant you can get a disease likecancer and die at the age of sixty. Now weare really living in the saying meaning weas Charleston natives are not passingaway but being murdered fresh out ofhigh school. I don't know about you but

when I decide to have kids Mr. Charles-ton I'm not raising them to be a part of your slaughter house. What do you wantfrom us?? No matter how good we raiseour kids you take them away. The streetsare a jungle!! Survival of the strongest!!Its sad to say we put the streets as a plat-form for the ones who pave the way of better living. You make it so hard for us

to do better when you judge us by ap-pearance and paper work. Whats wrong with dreads? In Jamaica how long a mandreads are and shells in his hairmeasures how strong of a worker heis. So why do you try to twist our waysand make us ashamed of ourselves.Charleston SC supposedly WAS the slave

state but in all honesty we are still slaves.Slaves to state, slaves to system, andslaves to the bull crap education they arepumping into our minds now. Why is black history the shortest month of the year? Why is the government trying tochange the history books saying slaves where just unpaid workers. Its time to wake up from this nightmare. How far will you go to make a change? How manymore times will we see Rip/Sip to somebody on social media? Don't you under-

stand the more kids that drop out ofschool the more jails are being built!!Charleston you have seriously let usdown. We can't go anywhere without afight or a shooting when all we want to dois have fun. Ughhhhh and don't even getme started on the people you took awayfrom us that where innocent. My mother would always say a bullet don't have noname on it. Its crazy we have got to do better. Don't just say what you want to doto make Charleston a better place does it!Dare to dream bigger for our lost lovesones because they can no longer dreamfor us. Who are you to take lives as if youare God? There is no coming back afterdeath. You just took somebody's mom,

dad, sister, brother etc. How would youfeel if someone decided to kill someone you love?? The sad part is some of youare proud to say we are so dangerous!!Not dangerous but foolish all that ani-mosity built up could have been investedin making money!! What good are you tothis world promote unity not stupidity!!Our people are in danger. All these mur-

Everyone has heard about how bad the

food we eat is lately. We are now hear-ing about a lot of ailments and diseas-es attributed to this fact. With the riseof obesity, heart disease, diabetesamong other things. Until now we hadno clue that our foods are being genet-ically modified (GMO). Which meansthese foods DNA has been changed toresist certain chemicals and pest. Along with preservatives, artificialsweeteners, and petrol dyes. Nothingthat we eat on a regular basis serve usany benefit.

With foods being processed it has tak-en away the wholesome value of it.Bleached flour, pasteurized milk and juices all take away the natural vita-mins stored naturally in those foods. Vitamin deficiency is the leading causeof a lot ailments that could otherwise be avoided.

Eating whole organic fruits and vege-tables is a good way to get back some

of what nature intended. Our parents

are said to be in better health than us because of this fact. Especially in theGeeChee area. A lot of us can recall ourgrandmother planting most of their whole foods. Which is what our par-ents had eaten all their lives. Very littleprocessed foods or microwave dinnerslike we have been eating the past25yrs.This also has a lot to do with therise of veganism, look at Jay and Be- yonc. You don't have to be a vegetari-an though to be on a healthy diet. Juststart paying attention to the label.

Even if it's not a rap label, check for what your putting in your body. Eat as whole as you can. We say it can beexpensive but you pay a lot to lookgood on the outside. So do the same onthe inside so you can stunt... I meanlive a little longer.

You must believe youare worthy of change and you are wor-thy of improvement and you are wor-thy of being the best you can be ..... You must be willing to set aside your

negative notions about life, abouthardships, about evil people, aboutthings you have no control over, andmostly about yourself .... You must be willing to stop feeling sorry for your-self, (something Pastor Thomas Dixoninstilled in me) while looking at the

world constantly moving around you .... And the most important of allof these is; "You must get up and makesomething of yourself no matter whatpeople say about the person you once was and the things you once did ....Even with all these things .... I'm stillnot gonna say I am perfect .... But I willsay this .... "I'm far from who I once was!" .... I must go now, but I hopesomeone who reads this will share it with their child and let them knowthat; If "Poppa Smurf" can change ....They shouldn't have no problem at theleast attempting to do so ..... What made you start the "Man in theMirror Project?

1. "Man in the Mirror" was inspired byone of the people who lived with me when I was a kid. He got into some trou- ble after leaving my home and when he wrote me to thank me for all I had donefor him in the past, I told him to comesee me. When he came home; to make along story short during our conversationI asked him where he saw himself 5 years in the future. He said he had nofuture, I said at 22 years old, no oneshould ever feel like they have no future.So I decided to do something about it.

Now we know "Man in the Mirror"Michael Jackson. Is there any relation between the two?

2. Yes, I took that name because thatsong represents everything we're tryingto do. Everyone has to learn the changemust begin with you!

Are there any requirements to volunteer for the events?

3. No not really as far as this event isconcerned we welcome volunteers fromall over. The only thing that prevents you from being a volunteer is if youre aregister sex offender, but that goes without saying.

How would you describe your project?

4. It is a community outreach project. We want to deal with the issues before we lose any more of our young people. While the kickoff is the summit. We dohave plans in place to follow this event.

How do you believe your work will helpothers?

5. My goal is to reach as many people as

we can and to help them understandtheir not alone. I don't believe in makingexcuses for our actions so of course thatmeans learning to take responsibly for your actions. After learning to do that we have programs set up that will helpthem make their change. We hope toreach them, with understanding andguidance to help them reach their goals.

We understand that the "Man in theMirror Project" was established here inSouth Carolina, do you plan on travelingto other states?

6. I didn't plan to, but I have been ap-proached to help start up similar pro-grams in areas like Jacksonville and

Atlanta. I have had the pleasure of work with people from all over the U.S. informing the program. So to answer yourquestion, time will tell.

7. Our "Taking Back Our Youth" a youthsummit is our event coming up. We canuse all the help you can get. To be hon-est, what we need most is money to helpfund the event. All proceeds goes to the"Man In The Mirror" SC. I just wantpeople to know we are trying to make achange for our young people. Let's givethem a real chance and let them knowthey are a priority to us. Let them know, we will not leave them to the govern-ment to take care of.

How do you keep each member involved

and motivated? 8. I think I'm the hardest person to keepmotivated to be honest. This is some-thing I have been working on for a yearand a half and sometimes it hard to keeppushing when you hear so many no's, but what keeps me moving is those words "I don't have a future". I believe

everyone else is following my lead. So if Ikeep myself going I'm blessed that theytoo will keep going.

Have you had any criticism towards yourideas for bettering the communities?

9. I haven't had much criticism per say. Ithink everyone is waiting to see if we do what we say we're going to do. I thinkthe community has been burnt so manytimes they don't know who to believe in.Truth is, I don't have any young childrenanymore of my own. All of my childrenare grown. I do this because I don't wantto see another mother crying over herdead child. I don't want to see anotherfather on the news begging for help to

find their child's killer. Most of all Idon't want to hear about another deadchild. So I wish more people would get behind this project to help make it asuccess. I get more of the waiting to seethan criticism. Which can be even moreharmful.

As opposed to the usually informativeelement that appears in my articles, Ihave taken the liberty of diverting fromthat particular element for this month,as I wish to convey a major concern thatI find troubling at the most inconvenientof times and, namely, during perfor-mances.

Now I suppose that most entertainmentartists, at some point in their careers,have been accosted with stagefright. And I venture to say that thissentiment occurs at the beginning ofmost such careers. And as I had taken atwenty - year sabbatical from performingto represent fellow artists in promotionand publicity of their careers, upon re-turning to performing, I believed that I would experience a major fright ofstage.

However, that was not the case. In fact,upon taking the stage again, it was as if Ihad not missed a beat (pardon the pun) with how comfortable I was on the stage

once more. And after realizing that thenormal performance stage fright experi-ence was nowhere on stage with me, myonly regret became how long I hadremained off stage.

However, since returning to the stage,there exists a new element of the stagethat gravely concerns me. And, the

more people in the band with me at anygiven time, the more grave the concerncan tend to be. As such, I have electedto list ten incidents that I have borne witness to and experienced at somepoint that may serve to inspire myexodus once more from live perfor-mance, in the interest of safety, security,and other such nonesuch.

I grew up listening to 263, Q.T.P.,

Carolina Pathfinders, Dino and one ofmy favorites B -Kill just to name a few.

Do you believe that artists from SouthCarolina has to work harder than otherstates?

No I don't think artists from S.C. haveto work harder. I just think we need toStand Together, because we have adialect and a culture that hasn't really been exposed to the world yet. It's likethe saying, UNITED WE STAND ANDDIVIDED WE FALL.

What does Juice Gang stand for??

Juice Gang stands for (Just Using In-telligence @ Creativity 2 Excel)

"JUICE". When we yell BANG it's not agang thing it stands for (BUSINESS ALWAYS NEVER GAMES) "BANG".

We know that you rap, act, and model Are there any other talents we shouldknow about?

Well yes, I write poetry and play thepiano, thanks to my granny Irene. I'm

an awesome host slash actor and last but not least I'm a dedicated Father!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I see myself owning myown school for music, yes I said aschool for music. Because not only amI infatuated with rap, I also love everyaspect of music, so what better job tohave!

Are you working on any new projects?

I'm working on my album entitled"THE GROOVEY GEEK" with someproduction from Slim Beezy, BB Slim,Hogg, and Montana Mista.With feat.

What do you believe that we as artists

from South Carolina we can do better? I think we can do better at supportingour own because if you go to any othercity it's not about pride or who's the best It's about "STATE UNITY".

I don't have a certain genre that I placemy music under because I feel likeonce you put a label on whatever youdo. You also set a limit, with me thesky is the limit.

What are some pointers you wouldgive to someone trying to come up inthe business?

Stay focused per -fect your craft, pray,and never let someone tell you what you can't do.

Now, I see that you go by the name"Bishop Drippa and "Blackk Boi ". Which do you prefer to be called and why?

Yes I do go by 2 names. My name isBlackk Boi, but everyone isn't comfort-able calling me that so that's when theother one comes into play, but me per-sonally I don't have a preference.

Using his lyrical dexterity to convey apoignant message, hip -hop heavyweightOmar Offendum, born in Saudi Arabia toSyrian parents, is a force to be reckoned with. Raised in Washington, D.C., the 32 year old embraces a politically influencedstyle, an approach that resonates strongly

with Arab youths, many who actively em- brace one of the most expressive forms ofmusic around: rap.

#Jan25, a track that quickly went viral,saw Omar focus on Cairos Tahrir Squareuprising, and 2010's solo effort,SyrianamericanA, was a rousing affairthat clearly displayed the rappers fond-ness for his parents homeland. A compel-

ling combination of noir-laden '90s rap beats complimented by Islamic poetry,

Omars debut received critical acclaim. The Syrian war is deeply intricate, muchmore complicated than a somewhat falla-cious belief involving brave rebels fightingthe immoral dictatorial regime. With justover 22 million citizens, Syria bordersTurkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon.Steeped in history that dates back to bibli-cal times, the war -torn country has anabundance of deserts and fertile land.Here, people are irritated by their govern-ment, the Assad regime, disillusioned by asheer lack of economic and political refor-mation.

As Omar alludes to in his music, the cata-lyst for the unforeseen carnage was the2011's jailing of some youths who dis-played anti -regime graffiti. While incarcer-ated, some of these children were killed,thus leading to public protests whichspread like wildfire. The anger was furtherfuelled by the failure of the government toreprimand the perpetrators. In April of thesame year, one month after the graffitiincident, the Syrian Army shot innocentdemonstrators, an incident that turnedprotests into a full -scale armed revolution.

Omars pro -revolution position has gener-ated positive feedback, especially with thegroup of activists inside Syria who placedthe rappers face on stamps commemorat-ing the rising.

In these tumultuous times, rap remains anoutlet for underdogs -turned -lyrical -connoisseurs to convert feelings of es-

trangement into inventive purpose. The Arab gravitation toward hip -hop culture isone that wants to remove stereotypicalassociations, one that wishes to convey thecomplexity of Arab identity. Omar doesthis in a cerebral manner; he is a promi-nent contributor to an ever expanding

genre. Through his scholastic approach,Omar regularly discusses the significantgulf that exists between East and West. Along with conveying his search for Arabidentity in the post -9/11 world, Omar dis-cusses the persecution he has faced in theUS. A clearly intelligent individual, Offen-dum realizes and appreciates that hip -hopand academia are closely linked, both of which focus on generational mles.

Syrian citizens are experiencing hardshipslike never before, with many genuine free-dom fighters now joined by individuals with their own Islamist agendas. In partic-ular, the situation in Latakia province iscritical, with villagers being massacred forsectarian reasons.

Omar is all too aware of this, offering thelistener intelligent music that is strippedof any bravado. With that being said, therapper doesnt sacrifice the thumping,Beastie Boys influenced beats that reflectheavily on his musical education. His track"#Syria," an outraged retort to SyrianPresident Bashar Assad, is one that focus-es on defenceless citizens' who have beenmet with a barrage of bullets, intimidationand far more ominous atrocities carriedout by pro - Assad forces. Offendum's proficient mike skills and lib-eral approach reflect heavily on a man thatmaintains a dynamic social media pres-ence, regularly detailing his travels acrossEurope and the Middle East. Offendum'sstyle reflects his vantage point between the worlds of East and West, one that is rootedin Syrian and Arabic characteristics whilealso swayed by an American philosophy. Millions of refugees have now fled Syria, with many crossing the border into Leba-

non, a country whose population of justover 4 million is now engorged by a floodof 2 million Palestinian and Syrian refu-gees. As the war in Syria shows no sign of abat-ing neither does Omars desire to highlightthe atrocities in the most creative way im-aginable.

Uncensored, Real, and most importantly you have to be Gully. So I sat down personally with one of the hottest up and coming artist in Charleston, West Ashleys own Gully

Murk. Mr. Murk, a man of few words, gives an in depth interview on what it takes to notonly survive in this industry but how to run it.

Tika: (slightly giggling) So what's up withthe name? Whats the origin of the nameGully Murk?

Gully Murk: Well its a name I got fromthe streets, I go hard and I murk every-

thing I do so Gully Murk is the name I wasgiven.

Tika: Ok so you said the name was givento you from the "Streets" were exactly are you from?

Gully Murk: I grew up in West Ashley, SC.

Tika: So the West is your stompingground?

Gully Murk: Something like that (laughinginnocently)

Tika: How do you think your music im-pacts the community you are from?

Gully: I rap about what I know. Every-thing I rap about Ive done, I really livethis.

Tika: (nodding) Ok, so what inspired youto do music?

Gully Murk: Well Ive always been intomusic, all my life, so why not make moneyfrom it.

Tika: I agree 100%! So out of all the artist you've ever heard whose your top 5 favor-ite Mc's?

Gully Murk: Well Pac, Biggie, Boosie...Ithink those are the main ones.

Tika: I figured Boosie would be one I hearthe influence in your music.

Gully Murk: Yea Yea you know Im asouthern rapper and Boosie was big whenI first started rapping so he's a big inspira-tion.

Tika: So if Ive never heard of Gully Murk what song off any of your albums will tell

Gully: Yea, Yea I would like to say that what I speak about in my music is really

my life. A lot of artist rap about what theydon't do. Im not a studio rapper in any way, shape, form, or fashion.
