Developing Your energy Talent

Presenting Organizations

With low oil prices, a year of lay-offs and oil production down, the energy industry is once again in a state of flux.

As we know, the industry ebbs and flows and either recruitment is at an all-time high, or an all-time low. Though many companies are not hiring, now is the time to get yourself educated on sectors that are hiring, brush up your interview skills, dust off that resume, and find new opportunities in Alberta and other regions. Global Energy Career Expo 2015 focuses on YOU; to help you develop your talent for the best advantage.

It is in this vein that we have added new features to Global Energy Career Expo this year. We have added the Candidate Development Theatre that focuses on helping candidates develop their resume, interview skills, use social media to maximize their hiring potential, and much more. In our Career Expo, we have companies that are recruiting, as well as some that want to talk to you about the future direction of their company.

The oil and gas industry simply cannot function without human services and resources, now and in the future. Take the time this year to discover the possibilities in your career, and network with our exhibiting companies to get a handle on the opportunities available.

Thank you to our exhibitors, sponsors, candidates and presenters for helping us refresh this year’s Global Energy Career Expo!

What to do while you are at the Career expo

• Take notes to keep track of who you talk to!

• Make sure to switch your cell phone to vibrate mode during the event to ensure your chat with important companies is not interrupted.

• When chatting with an exhibitor, stay on topic and remember they have a lot of people to speak with so try to be time-efficient. Answer their questions and have your questions prepared ahead of time. Spend a few minutes with them, thank them, and always ask what the next steps are in the process.

• Have your calendar with you – be ready to set up an appointment if asked.

• Socialize! Chat with other attendees – take advantage of the opportunity to exchange leads and industry news, and ask for referrals!

• Check out the Career Stage presentations for more career development information.

• Be sure to write down any questions that are asked that you were not prepared to answer; add them to your interview Q&A list to practice up on at a later time.

• If a company you’re interested working for does not currently have an opening in your field, check in with the recruiter – let him/her know your interest and find out who you should contact (preferably the hiring manager) to gain more information about their upcoming requirements.

What to do after the Career expo

• Like any other networking opportunity, don’t forget to follow up. Make sure to send follow-up emails right after the Career Expo and follow-up again a few weeks later if you haven’t heard anything.

• Send a thank-you letter by mail to confirm your ongoing interest. What should you say? Keep it short and sweet.

interview Techniques

eight cardinal rules of good interviewing

1. Keep it brief While every interview question requires a thoughtful and well-crafted response, most of your answers should be no longer than about two minutes. An exception to this rule might be the question commonly asked first – “Tell me about yourself.” In this case, you’re usually safe taking between three to four minutes. Remember that most of us tend to talk too quickly, particularly when nervous. Try not to cram twice the content into half the time while at the same time speaking twice as fast.

2. Stop talking when you’ve answered the question The times we regret having said something are usually the times when we’ve simply said too much. Most of us are uncomfortable with silence. Some interviewers know this and will purposefully remain silent after you’ve answered one of their questions to see if you will say more. Sometimes it’s fine when we do and sometimes we wish later we hadn’t. When you’re done answering, it’s usually the best policy to stop talking. If you do find the silence awkward you can ask a clarifying question like, “Have I answered your question?” or “Would you like more detail about that?” In fact these sorts of clarification questions are very helpful in ensuring that you’re giving the interviewer what he or she needs to make a good decision.

3. Listen carefully Keep in mind the old adage about human beings being given two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak. This may not be possible during an interview where you may be expected to do more of the talking, but it’s a good way to remember to pay attention. Don’t assume you know what your interviewer is asking until you’ve heard the whole question. If you don’t understand what you’ve been asked, seek clarification.

4. Don’t be modest Modesty can be counterproductive when it comes to interviewing. While you don’t want to be perceived as a braggart, you do need to promote yourself; that’s one of the reasons you’re there. It’s okay to say, “We did this or that.” It confirms that you’re a team player. But make sure you also identify what your role in the accomplishment was. How did you personally contribute to the success? Remember that sharing your accomplishments with interviewers is the best way for them to determine which of the candidates is mostly likely to be successful. So do them a favor and help them make the right choice!

interview Techniques

5. Don’t exaggerate This rule goes hand in hand with the last tip. While you need to promote your successes, don’t go overboard. Don’t claim credit for someone else’s achievement or pretend that you alone are responsible for your previous employer’s success.

6. Talk in concrete terms This is one of the most important rules of good interviewing. Teach yourself to be specific and concrete when answering an interviewer’s questions. The best answer (in fact, the best communication generally) almost always involve a story - in this case a success story or an accomplishment. If the interviewer points out that the position requires someone who does well with managing detail, don’t just tell them that you’re detail-oriented, prove it by telling them a story about how your attention to detail helped you accomplish a specific challenge.

7. Never defend or argue This one sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people get themselves into hot water by being defensive or argumentative in an interview. Remember, the customer is always right - and in this instance, you are the seller, they are the buyer. This includes being careful not to criticize the company or its leadership for perceived mistakes or shortcomings, even if the interviewer tells you the company is struggling with some aspect of the business and asks what you would do differently if hired. It’s one thing to offer a suggestion based on what you know has worked for you in the past. It’s another to imply by your answer that they should have done it this way from the beginning.

8. ‘Connect the dots’ for the interviewer Finally, when you tell your success stories make sure you link the benefit of your experience and your success to the immediate needs of their company. For example, if you have just told them how you improved your previous employer’s accounts payable process by streamlining the monthly reporting, go on to point out that those same skills could be put to good use in helping them achieve success in the work they described in their job description. This extra step, while always helpful, is particularly important when the company you’re interviewing with does somewhat different work than your previous company.

On top of these eight rules, be sure to show the interviewer your interest, enthusiasm, and confidence. Dress appropriately, make good eye contact, and smile! Remember you’ve already impressed them or you wouldn’t be meeting.

Job interview Follow-up

Wait, I thought the job interview was over? The average applicant thinks the interview is over when they leave the interview that day. For many average applicants, they are right, it is over. For the pros they are just getting to the good part. In sales training they call this next part follow-up. The highest paid salespeople have discovered this is where the big money is made.

Showing them you’re a real proFollowing up after the interview separates the amateurs from the pros. The amateurs don’t do it, the pros do. How do you follow up like a pro?

First, you want to get the business card from the person you interviewed with. The best way to get it is ask the interviewer before you leave. On most cards will be the three things you want.

1) The correctly spelled name and title. 2) The street address. 3) The interviewer’s email address.

Second, you send them a thank you email for the interview that very evening so it’s waiting for them when they get to work the next morning.

Third, you make a follow-up phone call to the interviewer on the fifth day after the interview. Let them know of your continued interest in the job and ask if there is any further information they need from you. If they are not available when you call, leave that basic message on their voice mail.

Fourth, you send a snail mail letter to them ASAP. I call this the “reverse cover letter.” It basically expresses your interest in the job and summarizes some of your strongest points as they relate to the job. About now many interviewers are thinking, “Wow, if this is the professional manner this applicant works this is the kind of person we want.” From that point on, just once a week, you politely alternate between phone, email and snail mail until they say you got the job or someone else got the job.

The big misunderstandingAverage applicants misunderstand this follow-up approach. They think, “I don’t want to bother the interviewer, they must be too busy.” WRONG thinking! Some companies purposely wait one to three weeks to make job offers. They observe who follows up and how many times and who does not (especially in sales jobs). That is actually the real interviewing part. Average applicants don’t do this. Top paid sales pros know the big sales (and jobs) are achieved in the follow-up.
