The desire for a personal spa in acolonial home is fulfilled when aguest bedroom is transformed intoa state-of-the-art masterbathroom.

The ChallengeLiz Murray, a prominent interior designer andspace planner who has designed some of theNorthwest’s finest homes, was approached byclients to remodel their colonial 1940s-stylehome in Portland, Oregon, with characteristicssimilar to their contemporary home in Brazil.

The objective was toremodel all threefloors of the home to be more open andstreamlined—withwall-hung cabinetryand sinks in allbathrooms—whileretaining some of the vintagecharacteristics, suchas the fireplace, windows, andhardwood floors.

While Murray’s clients desired a spa-likemaster bathroom, it was equally important tomake the home function more efficiently. “It’salways a challenge to take an older home withvintage attributes and give it a more open, streamlined design while having the twoconcepts blend well together,” says Murray.“Of course, you want to have form followfunction, so it needed to look great butperform really well.”

When Murray’s clients told her they reallyliked the look of wall hung, she asked them ifthey had wall-hung toilets in their Brazil home. When they told her they didn’t, but would loveto have them in their Portland home, sheknew exactly what she wanted to do.

The Solution“Right away the light bulb went off that I couldeasily use the Geberit system with Duravitfixtures for a great way to address thebathrooms,” says Murray. “Geberit is the beston the market. It performs well year after year.

I’ve specified the product because I can pair itnicely with other fixtures, including Duravit.”

The Geberit system provides unlimitedpossibilities for bathroom design by hidingthe toilet tank behind the wall and taking theplumbing fixtures off the floor. Bathroomdesign is transformed through the technologyof in-wall components, allowing for uniquestyle while improving reliability, performance, installation flexibility, and maintenance.

“It was a very complex master bathroomproject,” Murray recollects. “We had a 12½' x 14½' guest bedroom to work with thatmy clients didn’t need to use, so instead ofremodeling the master bathroom in itscurrent location, we used the guest bedroomfor the new master bathroom. We wanted asymmetrical layout. It was a bit of a challengeto keep everything lined up so that your eyecould move around the space really well.”

With a little help from Geberit, Murray met thechallenge, turning the guest bedroom into astate-of-the-art master bathroom suite. “Weused a flat white paint for the walls that isreally beautiful,” says Murray. “White andiridescent mosaic glass tiles with a hand-made look provide added interest to theroom. The heated flooring and walls featuremocha crème limestone tiles from Portugal ina larger 18-inch format. Matching counterslabs with the wall-hung cabinetry, sinks, andfixtures complete the look. It’s very spa-like.”

During some of the initial design meetings, the clients decided they wanted a urinal, inaddition to a toilet, in the master bathroomsuite. “Though you don’t often see a urinal in a residential setting, that was perfect for thisproject,” says Murray, “because Geberitmakes a carrier for the urinal, and Duravitmakes beautiful urinal fixtures that matchtheir water closets. There isn’t a more cutting-edge look you can get with this applicationthan by pairing a Geberit Concealed Tank andCarrier system with a Duravit fixture.”

Murray proposed adding separate roomswithin the master bathroom suite, one for theurinal and one for the toilet. “The way theroom is laid out, we didn’t have to change theentire floor plan,” Murray explains. “Aroundthe corner in the room, we converted a smallcloset into the urinal room, and then created asmall room for the toilet.”

Since the Geberit system can be adjustablefrom 14 to 19 inches in height and adds about5 inches of space in front of the toilet just byplacing the tank behind the wall, it worked wellfor both the water closet and the urinal room.

“My clients love it!” says Murray. “Everythingworks very well for them. They say it’s theirdream home and they look forward to retiringthere. Maybe it’s because, they said, theyhave plenty of space to use the bathroomtogether, without getting in each other’s way.”
