Spur Gear The “standard” gear, has straight cut
teeth, fit only if parallel to each other Examples: Most of the gears included
in the Mindstorms set, gasoline engines, bicycle transmissions
Worm Gear Spiraled threads mean that worm
gears can be mounted horizontally to spur gears
Generally give a high torque/low-rpm conversion
Examples: Mills, Mining Equipment, Torsen Differentials
Crown Gear Teeth project 90 degrees out from the
side of the gear Used to change direction of power Examples: Rack and pinion,
differentials
Rotary to Linear Conversions
Rack and Pinion: A gear rotates ontop of a toothed beam and therefore pushes it
Examples: Cog Railway, Rack and Pinion Steering
Rotary to Linear Conversions
Camshaft: A wheel with a potrusion pushes against a rod, moving it up and down
Examples: Gasoline engines, diesel engines
Rotary to Linear Conversions
Crankshaft: A gear with a free-moving rod attached to the side of the gear and a moveable rod rotates creating a piston like motion
Examples: Gasoline Engines, Diesel Engines, Steam Engines
