Math Challenges John had a box partially filled with apples. He
gave Anna three-fifths of the box of apples and had two-tenths of a box left. What part of a box did he have the begin with?
Maria made seven dozen peanut butter cookies. She needs 144 cookies for the bake sale. What expression gives the number of cookies she still needs to make?
Leonardo has a fish tank that holds 50 liters of water. About how many quarts is this?
A trapezoid has a side that is perpendicular to the bases. What is the sum of the measures of the angles formed by the other side and the bases?
End-of-Grade Test
Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of important principles and concepts, and relate mathematical information to everyday situations.
Focuses on processing information and higher-order thinking.
Assess whether a student can move beyond memorization and apply process skills to the investigation of mathematics.
Performance Levels Level 4: Above grade level. Student
consistently performs beyond grade level. Level 3: On grade level. Student consistently
demonstrates mastery of grade level concepts and skills.
Level 2: Slightly below grade level. Student demonstrates inconsistent mastery of a skill. May need additional help with a concept or objective.
Level 1: Below grade level. Student does not understand and struggles with concepts and objectives. Needs additional help.
Level 3 & 4 Students
Show a high level of conceptual understanding
Compute accurately Respond consistently with appropriate
answers or procedures Demonstrate flexibility by using a variety of
problem-solving strategies

Myths about the EOGs DPI writes the test items.
Written by NC teachers, curriculum specialists… The red…purple…form is harder.
Forms are equivalent & parallel in % of items at the Goal Level. The test questions on different forms of the tests are the
same but in a different order. Each form contains unique items.
You get more points for answering harder questions. Tests are pre-equated on difficulty, a hard item has an easy one to
“make up for it.” Tests have generally the same distribution of easy/med/hard items. All questions on the test have the same weight.
The test includes above grade material. Items that count are only on-grade material.

Best Practices in Math Teaching for understanding
rather than memorization“Items assess whether a student can move beyond
memorization and apply process skills to the investigation of mathematics.” Test Information Sheets
Examples: Multiplication Geometric Shapes
Understanding the concept instead of just the procedure
You can’t memorize understanding!
Best Practices in Math Discussion of mathematics
Questioning & Justification of thinking Why? Why did that work? How did you get that answer? Does that work every time? Can you find another way to get the solution? Is your answer reasonable? What happens if…..?
Justifying answers and solution processes
Preparing for the TestGrades 3 – 5
Pick 2-3 big concepts to focus on.3rd – Problem Solving, Fractions & Geometry4th – Area & Perimeter, Fractions,
Range, Median, & Mode5th – Geometry, Fractions, & Algebra
Do not spend precious time on drill and
practice of multiplication & division facts.
Preparing for the Test Practice sample EOG test items. Help students to analyze test
questions and pick distracters.
EOG Released Tests One form of the EOG test for each
grade level and subject tested has been released by NCDPI & Accountability Services. (includes corresponding answer keys and scoring tables)
Released test forms have been retired and will no longer be used as part of routine test administrations.

Additional Ideas What activities or games do you
use in your classroom to review math skills?
Final Hints for Students
Get a good night’s rest. Eat breakfast. Maintain a positive attitude. Take your time. Read carefully. Reread confusing questions. Choose and eliminate answers wisely. Use the calculator. Write in test booklet.
Ways Parents Can Help Be sure child knows their addition and
multiplication facts.
Help students strengthen their mental math and estimation skills.Students should be able to do basic
computation without relying on a calculator.
Help students improve their measurement skills with real-life experiences.
How would you solve this problem?
Adrian had 7 marbles in her marble bag. After school, she found some more marbles that she had misplaced and put them in her bag. When she counted all of her marbles there were 15 in all. How many extra marbles did Adrian find and put in her bag?
How would you solve this problem?
Maggie had a large collection of stuffed animals. She gave away 6 of her favorite animals to her little sister, Grace. Maggie still has 15 stuffed animals left in her collection. How many did she have before she gave the animals to Grace?

How are these problems alike? How are they different? What operations did you use to solve the
problems? What key words are in the problem?

Best Practices in MathUse of calculators and technology
on a regular basisNot used for basic, mental math skillsEnd-of-Grade:
Grades 3 - 7: 66% of problems—54 out of 82 questions are calculator active
Students must use the calculator they are most familiar with and have practice using.
TI-15 Calculators (or more advanced)Never supersedes instruction
Calculator Review Name the four ways to clear the
calculator. Describe how to change levels and
operations in the Problem Solving Mode. Explain how to find the place value
of numbers. Explain how to simplify fractions. How
do you know it is in simplest form? Describe how to create your own
Algebra equations and inequalities.
