GEA Charity Golf Day raises over $8000 for Roseberry Community Services

More than 100 local professionals from the industry sector gathered on Friday, the 19th of July to network, compete, and “chip in” for a good cause at the Gladstone Engineering Alliance’s (GEA) 2013 Charity Golf Day. 36 teams participated, a total of 108 players, in the 3-person Ambrose format played over 18-holes.

1st placed team was Transpacific sponsored by Golding and generously donated by Heron Island with a 3 night’s stay. Bamser team with Ben Crosby at the helm walked away with 2nd place proudly sponsored by Hatch and with 3 digital printers kindly donated by CQ Digital Solutions. 3rd place was sponsored by CQ Digital Solutions and won by the Observer team. The Ladies Winner was Nicola Kelbie and sponsored by Hatch. Val Garrett - Ladies and John Kolesky  - Mens, were the winners for the longest drive, sponsored by RPS.

Generate PR entertained the golfers with a miniature car race track with the fastest round at 7 seconds. Heron Island had a flipper and snorkel sprint race which Robert Mitchell won with a best time of 3 seconds!  Newprint HRG donated a $200 gift voucher which Mark Richardson won through a business card lucky draw.

Projects Unlimited provided a BBQ as a raffle and lucky Neil Jardine won this $700 prize! Projects Unlimited also collected a further $413 in cash through their golf hole activity, KTEQ Rentals collected $205 through a chipping competition and the girls from Westpac collected a whopping $670 for the charity! Custom Fluidpower donated a golf bag for the best dressed golfer of the day which Rick Garrett won.

GEA’s VP Lance McKay, handed over a cheque to the value of $6500 to Colleen Tribe, General Manager for Roseberry Community Services - the chosen charity for 2013.  Roseberry Community Services plan to use the funds collected to extend the deck at Roseberry House in Rollo Street.

Safety Moment

Process safety management is a structured approach for managing process plant hazards and risks, impacting on people, plant, environment and community.

The application of risk management to process design with consideration of the human factor scenarios is a key function that adds integrity to the process operation. A process safety evaluation is crucial when planning changes to any process design.

Design and analysis practices must apply process safety management throughout the design activities associated with all stages in process development.

Process safety management should consider the following 5 key ‘Safe Design’ elements as part of process development:

Use a Systematic Risk Management Approach – hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control;

Consider the Lifecycle – concept to disposal;

Safe Design Knowledge and Capability – acquired and through engagement of those with specific skills;

Consultation, Cooperation and Coordination – essential to manage health and safety risks

Information Transfer – of identified hazards and action taken or required to control risks;

Some state legislation places legal requirements on duty holders to comply with these elements.

Managing work health and safety risk is a key component of Process Safety Management and is an ongoing process that should be applied whenever any work activity changes.

The figure below demonstrates ways to control risks from highest level of protection and reliability to the lowest. Work through this hierarchy when managing risks.

Elimination of a hazard is always the most effective control, however if this is not reasonably practicable, minimise the risk by working through the alternatives in the hierarchy.

Gladstone Engineering Alliance Major Industry Conference Presented by Golding

September Industry Update Luncheon presented by ANZ – “The Darwin Experience: LNG Operations and Maintenance” Featuring keynote speaker Adrian Button – Team Leader of Operations for QGC, this luncheon, to be held on September 17th at the Harvey Road Tavern and proudly presented by ANZ is sure to provide a clear insight into the operations and maintenance phase of the LNG projects. Drawing upon the experiences from Darwin in which Adrian had first hand experience, and highlighting the experiences, challenges and achievements, this luncheon is one not to be missed by all.

Delegates from the Toowoomba Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) will also be attending this event, allowing for fantastic networking opportunities.

For hard working youngsters looking for a kick-start, to seasoned veterans of the industrial sector, Gladstone is known as the place to be. An ever-changing landscape providing endless opportunities professionally, it is impossible to for-go an opportunity to make the move when presented with one. But as a fresh face who has just arrived in a town that’s abuzz – how do you get to know people, create professional and personal networks and engage with the business and wider communities?

The answer? – Sport!

The fact is that Gladstone’s on the move. It is not only an industrial hub and a hive of activity but it is just as equally, a serious sporting community. Perhaps it’s the search for a balance of work and play that draws the crowds but the numbers being driven to the multiple weekly local sports and the consequential networking opportunities outside of the usual crowds are invaluable.

On a Monday and Wednesday night, around 1000 Gladstone men and women lace up their runners and meet for the local Touch Football games. Featuring teams that go by the name of the Bechtel Boys, QGC, Cement Australia, and the GLNG Trains, it seems worthwhile pursuing the idea that sport is in fact an underestimated networking platform.

If touch football isn’t your forte, the Gladstone Road Runners and Parkrun social running groups collectively involve over 150 members in their activities. Gladstone Rugby league sees over 100 players on the field each week. Alternatively, the numerous Gyms, Golf Courses, the Port Curtis Sailing Club and other sporting facilities are frequented weekly by local business owners and managers.

Project UpdateGeorgiou wins biggest QLD project Georgiou has announced it has secured a $52 million earthworks contract with Origin to construct a new storage pond at Spring Gully near Roma, Queensland. Origin is the Upstream Operator of the Australia Pacific LNG Project.To be delivered by Georgiou’s Queensland branch, the Spring Gully Pond C project involves the construction of a double-lined, tiered four cell earth dam for the purpose of brine storage.Queensland General Manager Shaun McBain said, “This is the largest contract Georgiou has secured in Queensland since establishing our business here five years ago and signifies the start of a great working relationship with Origin Energy.”“Since commencing operations here in Queensland in 2008, our business has grown through a series of strong infrastructure projects for both the public and private sectors. We will be utilising our Georgiou

systems and processes on this project and looking forward to continuing to build our reputation as a key contractor in Queensland.”The project scope includes site clearing; stripping of access road; bulk earthworks; installation of leak detection systems, primary and secondary liner systems, and pond telemetry systems; construction of inlet and outlet structures, pump station foundations, stock proof perimeter fencing, site access road and association drainage structures; and, site rehabilitation.Construction work on the project is due for completion in March 2014. The project is located on the Taloona property which is part of the Spring Gully Gas Fields, located approximately 73km North East of Roma, Queensland.

Many business owners (49% according to recent research) will rely on the sale of their business to help them fund their retirement. Unless they have a realistic figure in mind they will be disappointed because when it comes to sell, no one will be prepared to offer what the owner believes it is worth.

The obvious question is how is how do you establish a realistic value for your business? Some industries have a rule of thumb, e.g. recurring income, but generally businesses are valued on some multiple of their future maintainable earnings. The example below shows how a business value is calculated this way;

The first step is to determine the Future Maintainable Earnings of the business. The starting point is usually the last 2 -3 years profit and loss statements (plus a current budget if you have one).

IS YOUR BUSINESS REALLY WORTH WHAT YOU THINK?This financial information is used to calculate a theoretical number which is what a purchaser could expect to earn from the business if they buy it.

In calculating the Future Maintainable Earnings abnormal income from large one-off sales or costs are excluded. It is also normal to add back owner specific costs like interest, depreciation or items more of a personal nature e.g. vehicles. Depending on the circumstances different years are given a different weighting, so a current year may be weighted higher than an earlier year because it is more relevant.

The multiple applied to the Future Maintainable Earnings is related to the risks associated with a business. A riskier business will command a lower multiple than a less risky business in the same industry.

Valuing a business is complex, if you are using the sale of your business to fund retirement then for your own sake have your business valued. The sooner the better!
