Safety Moment

The first of three GEA Tender Readiness Workshops, Advanced Tender Writing for Teams, took place on Tuesday 19 March in Gladstone. The session was lead by tender coach and writer Deborah Mazoudier of Aurora Marketing.

The one day workshop pushed beyond the basic practices of good writing and placed heavy emphasis on how to develop and implement customised tendering strategies. Participants discussed tender management best practice including how to holistically review a tender request and how to maximise your company’s institutional knowledge. Attendees noted some of the most useful information of the day included the portion devoted to techniques for critically examining criteria requirements in order to fully understand the needs of the client. Through hands-on exercises attendees gained useful tools for dissecting criteria questions to pinpoint key words and concepts to address in responses.

The facilitator challenged participants to consider that even in today’s competitive market, a winning bid does not just come down to the bottom line and shared tools to create strategically-presented, client-focused tender documents that stress value for money, highlight innovation, and give the client exactly what they want.

Feedback from the workshop was very positive and participants found it helpful to see the potential traps that can be encountered by not interpreting the criteria requirements correctly.

Habits are routines of behavior that are repeated regularly and tend to occur subconsciously. If you instinctively reach for a cigarette the moment you wake up in the morning, you have a habit. By the same token, if you lace up your running shoes and hit the streets as soon as you get home, you’ve acquired a habit.

Whether a habit is good or bad depends on the outcome. Habit formation is the process by which new behaviours become automatic. The first time you make a decision it is a

conscious action. Repeating this process over and over and it will eventually become a habit (subconscious action) that often occurs automatically.

Old habits are hard to break and new habits are hard to form. That’s because the behavioral patterns we repeat most often are etched in our neural pathways. Through repetition, it’s possible to form new habits or change bad ones.

Recognise and acknowledge the habit you want to change, for example:

Fitting hearing protection after entering an area of high noise and not before

Use a prompt as a placeholder to change the habit, for example:

Use the action of swiping onto a complex as the prompt. The fitting of hearing protection before leaving the swipe point will encourage the change in habit

Tell a mate of a habit change you want to make, and YOU can help a mate by telling him when you notice that change.

So give it a shot – try to identify a bad habit you have and work on fixing it by changing it into a good habit.

Remember: You will have to repeat the process many times over before it will become a habit, so be consistent and persistent.

Business Life Plan (BLP) – A Plan Especially for Small & Medium Business Owners Most small and medium business owners’ personal lives and their businesses are intertwined - issues that impact the business will also affect the owner’s personal life and vice versa. Project Update

The first modules for the Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG) project have been unloaded on Curtis Island.

They will be used to build the foundation structure for the LNG processing trains and supporting infrastructure of the project.

APLNG’s David Lundeen said the four modules represented a new phase of the project.

“The arrival of the modules at our site marks the start of the next stage of construction on Curtis Island. The site preparation work is complete, the concrete foundations have been laid and we are now ready for the larger components of the facility to be constructed,” he said.

The first four modules are a tiny fraction of what will be needed to see the processing trains fully built. Over the next 18 months, 69 modules will arrive from the construction yard in Batam, Indonesia.

Not all of them will need to be transported individually - shipments may contain up to seven modules of various sizes. The average journey time from Batam to Gladstone is about a month.

While the fabrication of the processing trains is happening overseas, there are now 2300 workers at the APLNG site on Curtis Island.

Bechtel is running the project, and Gladstone general manager Kevin Berg said substantial progress had been made on the ground in a short space of time.

“This is credit to the workforce we have here in Gladstone, and the local suppliers on the ground who have enabled us to reach this point on schedule.” Mr Berg said.

Massive LNG modules make it to Curtis The EIS process for the Gladstone Steel Plant Project (GSPP) is continuing.

Boulder Steel Ltd lodged the EIS with the Queensland Office of the Coordinator General in September 2012. The EIS was open for public submission for 6 weeks in January and February this year. Boulder Steel Ltd is now waiting to receive a formal response from the OCG regarding the EIS, which is expected to be received this month.

Boulder Steel is focused on pursuing partners who can assist with not only investment but with fund raising in China and who can also participate in other aspects of the GSPP, such as engineering, construction and design.

Boulder Steel is also in detailed discussions with relevant companies about modularisation.

The project team is continuing to meet potential off-takers for the semi-finished steel slabs and have a follow-up meeting in a few weeks time to provide further information to a potential significant off-taker.

Boulder Steel is planning to hold a workshop in Gladstone for interested contractors under the auspices of the Gladstone Engineering Alliance to present the GSPP’s ‘construction delivery plan’.

Patrice Brown Director, CQG Consulting

A home-grown successful Central Queenslander, Patrice established CQG Consulting, one of Queensland’s largest regionally based environmental and planning consultancies, less than 10 years ago.

Born and raised on a remote cattle property and educated through a combination of home schooling, bush and boarding schools, Patrice is now also a partner in a cattle property with her husband.

Patrice cites some of her most challenging years were working as the NSW State Environmental Officer for CSR Timber, which required a lot of travel whilst at the same raising a young family and completing a

Masters in Engineering. She stresses the importance of building personal support and strong professional networks during these times to enable it all to come together.

Patrice has held a number of board positions for the Australian and State Government as well as voluntary board roles for community and economic development organisations. She is currently the Chair of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand’s external relations committee.

She is very proud of CQG’s achievements, particularly the recent EIS approval of the Great Keppel Island Revitalisation Project and the completion of the Boulder Steel EIS. Patrice has presented at numerous conferences including at the Green Ports Congress in France last year and the upcoming International Association of Impact Assessment (IAIA) next month in Canada.

In recognition for her contributions to the environmental sector Patrice was the only environmental consultant invited to present to UNESCO and IUCN during their mission last year to assess the management of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Lois Auld Assistant Manager, Bullivants

Lois Auld has recently been appointed as the new manager with safety handling specialist company Bullivants at their branch in Beckinsale Street in Gladstone.

Bullivants has a very strong national network with 26 branches around Australia, and is recognised as a market leading supply partner in lifting, rigging and safety equipment provision, with a large depth of experience in the supply and maintenance of equipment to the agricultural, mining, marine transport, construction and engineering industries. With her recent appointment, Lois has the distinction of being the company’s first female manager in 120 years of

trading!

Lois was born in Glasgow and educated at Dollar Academy, which is one of Scotland’s leading independent co-educational day and boarding schools. Her academic success was matched in the extra-curricular activities of hockey, drama, debating and community work. In her final year she was the Chairman of a voluntary group within the school, which raised fifty thousand pounds during the year that was distributed to four national charities.

She then took an Honours degree in Business Management at Newcastle University in the North of England over three years, and excelled on the board of AIESEC, one of the world’s largest student-run organisations that focus on providing a platform for youth leadership and development. As a farewell to Newcastle, the Great North Run half marathon was completed in a time of two hours.

At the age of 21, Lois decided to head ‘down under’ on her travels to visit a few relatives in New South Wales and Queensland, which lead her to Gladstone where she is enjoying the Australian way of life.

GEA member and Queensland business The Bullion Group has designed a software system to take charge of records management for employee qualifications and training, as well as plant maintenance and scheduling. The system can be used across many industries and is intended to aid the administrative processes associated with keeping track of people, plant, procedures and processes.

The 4P System (4PS) was born out of The Bullion Group’s own need for an effective way to manage and record information. The business had grown to a point where a software system was needed to manage certain records and processes, in a similar way to an HR style database. The business was experiencing issues relating to the management of staff training. Employees’ qualifications and inductions were expiring and they didn’t have an easy way to keep track of this information. In addition to employee records, the business also needed a database to manage their assets, such as equipment registers and maintenance, procedures and records; however they were unable to find anything on the market that was suitable and met their needs. There were systems available that came close, however the cost of the licence was unaffordable for a small to medium business and the systems were quite complex and not very user friendly. The Bullion Group soon realised there was a real need for an affordable system and set about researching this option in 2010.

The Bullion Group engaged software architect/developer Ben Lewis to develop a database from scratch that would take care of all their records management needs and the “4P System” was born. Lewis’ background includes working on multiple enterprise grade systems in varying industries including SAP, ISP Data Collection, Network Management, Inventory Management and Control.

Although the system has been developed to meet The Bullion Group’s own business needs, its user friendliness and simplicity enables it to be used across varying industries and business types. It aids with contractor management and one of its greatest benefits is its affordability. It can be used for “Mum and Dad” style businesses as well as larger corporations.

The name “4P System” is derived from the four “P”s of business for which it is used - People, Plant, Procedure and Process. Each “P” is a separate module and can be purchased individually or all four modules can be used together. This gives more freedom to the purchaser, as it is not necessary to purchase a licence for all modules if only one or two modules are required. The “People” module is complete and has been used by a few businesses already. The “Plant” module is at a point where it is about to be tested, and the “Procedure” and “Process” modules are expected to be completed in 2014. Customers can pick and choose the modules that their business requires or select all four modules. Licenses for the modules start at $3,000 per module per year, with a discount offered if buying a license for all four modules.

Gladstone Engineering Alliance (GEA) went to tender in February for local charitable organisations and clubs to submit applications to become the beneficiary of the GEA Charity Golf Day this July. After receiving an overwhelming response from local charities, the GEA selection committee elected Roseberry Community Services as the charity that best addressed the selection criteria and had a strong link to local industry to become the beneficiary for 2013.

GEA committee member Nicola Kelbie said the interest from local charities was substantial and all causes very deserving, which made the selection process quite difficult.

“GEA would like to thank all applicants for their submissions and although all causes were very worthy, after a careful consideration process the selection committee appointed Roseberry Community Services as this year’s beneficiary,” Ms Kelbie said.

Roseberry Community Services Limited (RCS) has been assisting socially and financially disadvantaged members of the Gladstone community for more than 25 years.

RCS General Manager Colleen Tribe said the organisation is looking forward to working with GEA on the golf day and are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop and improve their existing facilities.

“We are delighted to be aligned with GEA for this event. This funding will allow us to carry out much needed upgrades to improve Roseberry House for local Gladstone youth,” Ms Tribe said.

Roseberry House provides respite to local young people who have been through significant trauma and homelessness, some from an early age. Roseberry Community Services aim to provide their young clients with a safe and inviting place to reside while they work to get their lives back on track. Through their Branchout, Transition to Independent Living and Get Ready for Work programs, RCS help young people to re-engage with education and gain employment and training in local industry.

GEA would like to recognise Bindaree Lodge, Boyne Island Lions Club, MATES in Construction and Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre for their time and effort in preparing their submissions and look forward to considering these organisations again for the 2014 event.

The charity golf day is to be held on Friday 19 July at the Gladstone Golf Course and will see over 100 GEA members and friends hitting the green for a fun day of networking and friendly competition. Roseberry Community Services staff and volunteers will have a presence on the day to support the event and rattle their charity buckets for a great cause.
