What is high school like?

What do I need to DO?DO YOUR BEST IN MIDDLE SCHOOL- Many of the classes that you are taking now will determine if you go into the advance courses in high school, especially Math and Language Arts. You need advance courses to get into college.

DO YOUR BEST TO BE ORGANIZED- Getting into a habit of being organized and responsible is key. In high school teachers will not keep your items for you, nor hold your hand in completing assignments.

DO WHAT TEACHERS TELL YOU- Learning to listen, being respectful (behavior), and being an independent learner is important as learning to take directives and working in groups. Doing what teachers tell you to do and taking instructions now, trains you for working more on your own in high school.

What do I need to KNOW?KNOW how to select classes for your schedule-Counselors will help you, but know what courses are needed for graduation and what courses are needed to go to college.

KNOW how to read your schedule-Knowing what classes are taken on what day and term is important. If you do not understand, do not be afraid to ask someone.

KNOW the building and key people-You have to know where to go. It is important to come to open house so you can map out your classes, and be on time to them. IT IS IMPORTANT! Also, know your counselor, principal, teachers, GEAR UP coordinator, and CFNC College Advisor, because they will be helpful in assisting you with credit completion, testing, and college.

KNOW YOURSELF- Do not become a follower, be a leader. There are so many things you can “get into”, but staying positive and focused is important-do not follow the in crowd. Completing assignments IS COOL, NOT dropping out!

KNOW YOUR SCHOOL-Understand that there are activities for you to become involved in, and it pays off BIG TIME when applying to colleges!

KNOW TESTING- Understand that every test you take counts towards your future, and TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY!

Is there a difference between middle school and high school?
