DIAGNOSIS OF NOISE, VIBRATION

Abnormal noise can be caused by

Faulty bearings Damaged clutches Worn oil pump Improper fluid level

Damaged planetary gears

Worn bands Contaminated

fluid

Page 3: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

VIBRATION

Most vibration problems are caused by torque converters.

Bad torque converters. Improperly mounted torque

converter. Cracked flex plate

Page 4: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

NOISE

Customer complaints about transmissions can be incorrect.

Other causes could be Bad CV or U-joints Wheel bearings Brake calipers

VIBRATION DIAGNOSIS

Pay attention to

Engine speed Vehicle speed Engine load Trans range

Page 6: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

NOISE DIAGNOSIS

If noise occurs at all times and engine speeds– Trans oil pump– Converter

If noise only occurs in one range– Planetary gear set– Clutch or Band

INSPECTION

Determine what particles are made of Use a magnet to see if particles are

steel or aluminum. Plastic can come from torque

converter Each piece must be carefully

inspected.

TRANSMISSION REMOVAL 1. Remove pan to drain oil and inspect debris. Remove drive line Disconnect cooler lines Disconnect shift linkage, TV linkage or

Modulator. Disconnect neutral safety switch, if Trans

mounted.

TRANS INSTALLATION

Make sure dowel pins are in the engine block.

Not in the transmission. Make sure converter is free at all

times. Don’t allow Trans to hang.

Put bolts in the hole they came from. Page 66

DISASSEMBLY

Things to check before disassembly. Measure depth converter fits into

transmission case. Inspect felxplate for cracks or warpage. Inspect ring gear teeth for damage.

Page 14: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

CONVERTER

Check converter attaching bolts or bolt holes.

Check converter neck where seal rides. Check converter neck where bushing

rides. Check oil pump drive lugs. Check splines on input, stator, and

pump drive. Page 70

DISASSEMBLY

Things to check before disassembly. Look up how to Check end play Measure end play, write it down. End play should be set to the low end of

specification. Some transmissions may have more

than one end play check.

CLEAN WORK AREA There is no such thing as being to

clean. The correct position of all parts is of

great importance. Internal components can be washed

with solvent and dried. Each subassembly should be

completely disassembled.Page 73

Page 17: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

INSPECTION

Inspect each piece tree times. Inspect once during disassembly. Inspect during cleaning of the parts. Inspect during reassembly.

Page 18: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

BASIC DISASSEMBLY

When possible use a holding fixture. Remove bellhousing if possible. Remove all external switches,

modulators, governor. Remove speedometer driven gear and

adapter.

Page 73

Page 19: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

BASIC DISASSEMBLY

Remove pan and valve body. Any servos or other devices from oil

pan area. Remove front pump. Loosen band adjustment, remove struts. Remove drums, front & rear.

Page 73

Page 20: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

BASIC DISASSEMBLY

Remove snap ring. Remove gear train. Planetarys, internal gears, sun gear. Remove rear band. Overrunning clutch, and rear clutch

piston.

Final Drive Components

The unit is a transaxle disassemble the final drive.

Inspect all components.

Page 75

Page 22: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

Speedometer Drive Service

Check for wear on the driven gear seal area.

Check to see if teeth are “applecored”. Check adapter for wear. Check to see if the adapter has to be

“indexed”

Page 76

Page 23: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

Parking Pawl

Examine the engagement lug on the pawl, making sure it is not rounded off.

Make sure return spring is in proper place.

If parking components do not operate correctly, the car may roll or drop into reverse, causing serious injury.

Page 77

Page 24: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

Drive Chain

Drive chains should be inspected for stretch.

Inspect sprocket teeth for wear. Check bearings for smooth operation.

Page 78

Page 25: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

Thrust Washers

Inspect for scoring, flaking, and wear. Always check end play and set to low

side of tolerance. Use assembly lube to hold in place. Never use grease.

Page 79

Bushings

Check all bushings for:– Clearance– Flaking– Scoring– Smearing

Check installed depth before replacing. Align any oil holes.

Page 82

Page 27: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

Bearings

Check bearings for :– Pitting– Galling– Roughness

Page 82

Page 28: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

Planetary Gear Sets

Check planetary gear sets for:– Stripped teeth– Chipped teeth– End play– Loose pinions– Rough pinions

Page 84

Page 29: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

Shafts

Check shafts for:– Bushing & bearing surfaces– Seal surfaces– Open passageways– Sealing ring side clearance

Page 86

Page 30: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

TRANSMISSION CASE

Should be thoroughly cleaned & passages blown out.

Check Bushings. Fluid passages. Bolt hole threads. Governor bore.

Page 88

Page 31: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

TRANSMISSION CASE Check all Accumulator, Servo Bores for

scoring. Bores must also be checked for

scratches or gouges. Gasket surfaces must also be checked

for scratches. Check case for porosity. Check for warpage across valve body

surface. Page 89

Page 32: GEAR TRAIN, SHAFT, BEARING SERVICE l CHAPTER 4 l LAB MANUAL l PAGE 61.

EXTENSION HOUSING

Check for cracks. Check Bushing, with feeler gauge. Install seal with proper driver.
