    INTRODUCTIONThis catalog lists and gives essential technical data for all presently available General Electric Quartzline andincandescent lamps that are frequently used in lighting for: theatrical peformances; television, motion picture andvideo productions; and professional photography. Also included are selected types of GE fluorescent lamps used inthese applications for their high color-rendering properties-or for "black light",Lamp listings are grouped into tables-each containing a closely related "family" of lamps with similar configuration. Inmost of the tables, the lamps are interchangeable with each other (subject to limitations noted) Thus, most of the tablescomprise a self-contained guide for selecting alternative or substitute lamps, when desired.Lamp cross-reference and substitution guide sections show GE equivalent or substitute lamps keyed to various lampcodes (for obsolete types, and for those of other lamp or fixture manufacturers)The following paragraphs further explain the construction and use of the tables herein,LAMP IDENTIFICATION ANDORDERING CODESGE lamps used in stage/ studio applications are"coded" in one of three ways. These are often referred toas ANS/ Codes, Large Lamp Codes, and MiniatureLamp Codes.ANSI Codes are 3-letter codes assigned by the Amer-ican National Standards Institute, They provide a systemfor assuring mechanical and electrical interchangeabil-ity among similarly coded lamps of various manufactur-ers. The letters have no rational meaning other than toidentify the lamp dimensional, electrical and photomet-ric characteristics that are on file with ANSI. GE uses theassiqned ANSI 3-letter Codes as Order Codes for PhotoLamps. Some GE lamps have a multiple code (exam-ples: BFLlBFK, DYS/DYV IBHC). The first code is theofficial ANSI code, but the lamp also meets or exceedsthe described characteristics for the other code(s), andmay be used to replace lamps of either code.Large Lamp Codes (or Wattage Codes) are made up ofnumbers and letters, roughly describing properties ofthe lamp-generally wattage plus bulb shape and size(example: 500T12/9). An init ial letter "Q" indicates aGEOuartzline tungsten-halogen lamp (example: 0500T31CL). For GE Large Lamps specifically designed asstage/studio types, the assigned 3-letter ANSI Code iscombined with the Large Lamp Code to form thecomplete GE Ordering Code (example: FEL0100014CL).Miniature Lamp Codes (used herein for several PARand R Iamps in Tables 36 and 41 -44) can s ist only ofnumbers. They are also assigned by ANSI, to identifylamps of all manufacturers for interchangeability. GEuses these numerical codes as Miniature Lamp Order-ing Codes (example: #4515 in Table 41). In someinstances, the GE Miniature Lamp Code includes theletter "H", indicating a lamp with a tungsten-halogenfilament tube (example: H4515 in Table 41)VOLTAGEData are for 120-volt lamps, except where noted,Ouartzline and incandescent lamps can be operatedon AC or DC circuits. MARCTw,GEMI and fluorescentlamps are for AC only, with suitable auxiliary ballasts.ORDERING LAMPSOrder lamps using the codes in the GE Product OrderingCode column, Add the GE Description Code plus lampvoltage (essential for lamps available in more than onevoltage) to help assure getting the exact lamp required.

    LAMP INDEXESI fyou are seeking data for a particular ANSI-coded lamp,check the alphabetical index on page 4 for the lamptable number. If you know only the wattage or the LargeLamp Code, see the wattage index on pages 5 & 6.These two indexes show a /I the individual lamp typescontained in tables 1-35. However, the PAR & Randfluorescent lamps in tables 36-45 are not individuallyindexed, Instead, the PAR & R lamps are listed in tablesby bulb size and shape, as indexed on page 6 along withthe fluorescent/black light lamp tablesNote: Many obsolete and lor non-G E cod es are listed inthe Substitute Guide (pages 27-30), along with currentlyavailable GE replacements,

    LAMP TABLESEach of the 45 lamp tables contains a "family" of lampswith similar configuration. Tables 1-32 each containQuartzline and/or incandescent lamps having the samebase and (in most cases) the same light source location.Therefore, all the lamps within each table are inter-changeable with each other (subject to any limitationsnoted below the respective tables),Above the tables are illustrations of specific lamps,typical of the lamp family in each table. These photoshelp identify lamps; illustrate filament forms, bulbshapes and bases; and show some dimensionsAs a further aid to lamp identification and selection, mostof the tables are accompanied by one or more repre-sentations of typical stage I studio lighting fixtures thatuse lamps from the table. Because of the great diversityin stage/studio .Iighting applications, specific lampsmay be used in fixture types not shown, and other lamptypes may be used in the fixtures shown. A ll thefixture/application illustrations used with the tables areshown on the next page,FOOTNOTESThroughout the lamp tables, numbers in parenthesesindicate footnotes containing additional important in-formation. The numbered footnotes themselves are onpage 33.

    LAMP BASE DESIGNATIONSEach lamp table includes the name of the base used onthe lamps therein-and in parentheses, its letter InumberANSIIIEC designation, where applicable.

    LAMP INTERCHANGEABILITYWhen selecting an alternative lamp from within a particu-lar table, note any limitations to be considered as statedbelow the table or at the bottom of the page where thetable appears.In addition, filament forms may vary among lamps insome of the tables. Use of a filament form other than theone for which the luminaire is designed may result inreduced optical efficiency or some variation in beampattern.PAR & Rand Multi-Mirror lamps are generally inter-changeable within each table. However, there are differ-ences in voltage and lamp bases to be considered, aswell as the usual concern for excess heat when ahigher-wattage lamp is substituted.There is no interchangeability for GEMI'M and MARC lamps.RECOMMENDED OPERATING POSITIONLimitations on lamp operating position are shown eitherin the table heading or in a column within the table, inwhich case the following abbreviations are used:BD30-within 30 of vertical base-down.BU30-within 30 of vertical base-up.BD45-within 45 of vertical base-down.BDBU-within 60 of vertical base-down or base-up.BDTH-base-down to horizontal.LOW-NOISE CONSTRUCTIONAll Quartzline lamps (except PAR types), and manyregular incandescent Stage/Studio lamps, have special"low-noise" construction-to minimize generation of au-dible noise when operated on AC circuits. Such lampsare iclentified in the tables with a footnote reference (1 )after the Filament Form. Lamps, sockets, wiring. etc.tend to generate audible noise when used on dimmersthat distort the normal AC sine wave. "Low-noise" lamps,therefore, often prove especially useful on wave-distorting dimmers such as SCR, Thyratron. or "mag-amp" types. No noise is generated on "flat-wave" DCcircuits.LAMPS FOR NEW EQUIPMENT DESIGNSLighting equipment manufacturers are urged to consultwith GE Lamp representatives when new fixture designsare contemplated. so that the most appropriate lampscan be selected- taking into account such factors aslamp peformance characteristics, recent improvements,new lamps, trends toward obsolescence, etc.

    OTHER GE PUBLICATIONSAll the lamps in this consolidated Stage/Studio LampCatalog have been extracted from one or another of thethree GE complete line lamp catalogs listed below. Theycontain listings and data for many other lamps that maybe of interest for stage/studio applications.

    , CAUTION-These GEMI high-performance electric discharge lamps are constructed with Quartz Arc Tubes designed for use only withproper fixtures and power supplies. The arc tubes operate under high pressure at very high temperatures (as high as 9 5 0 C) and mayunexpectedly rupture due to internal or external factors, such as a system fai lure or a misapplicat ion. If this occurs, the arc tube could break andparticles of extremely hot quartz would be discharged into the enclosure andlor the surrounding envi ronment , creating a risk of personal injuryor lire. The lamps emil ultraviolet radiation which is harmful to eyes and skin.Therefore, install lamps only in enclosed Iighting fixtures wi th tempered 9lass or other lens/d iftuser material able to contain fragments of hotquartz (up to 950cC) Lensl dilluser material must be heat res istant and capable of absorbing ultraviolet radiation. If in doubt, contact your f ixturemanufacturer DO NOT operate a fixture with a missing or broken lens/diffuser.Operate the system with grounded power supplies and ighition devices which are compatible with the lamp electrical specifications

    approved by GE. For total electrical load. add power supply watts and lamp watts.DO NOT operate lamps at greater than 110% rated input voltage, nor-except for 200W, 575W and 1200W sizes-with the lamp axis tilted

    more than 15" I rom horizontal.Follow Instal lat ion and Operating Instructions packed with each lamp.

    G E S T A G E /S T U D IO L A M P S U B S T IT U T IO N G U ID E SIf a requested ANSI code is no! found in the index to this catalog (page 4), nor in the current GE Photo LampMaster Catalog PH3200-R, it may be listed in the following ANSI-Code Substitution Guide for Stage/Studiolamps. Requested wattage-coded lamps not appearing in the index (pages 5-6) are likely to be obsolete types forwhich available replacements may be identified in the Wattage-Code Substitution Guide (page 30).

    The following Lamp Substitution Guides show GE lamps that maybe substituted, if requested They are arrangedunder three main column headings:1. Lamp Requested ... Arranged alphabetically by ANSI code, or numerically by wattage code, lamps are furtheridentified by their wattage and bulb finish (clear or frosted). Most of the codes listed are for obsolete lamps;

    some are fortypes never manufactured by GE; a few are for lamps used in other than stage/studio applications.2. This Lamp May Be Substituted ... A GE lamp that may generally be used instead of the requested lamp.These columns are identical to those for the requested lamps, for quick comparison of wattage and bulb finish.3. Substitute Lamp Differs in These Respects ... Everything in the columns under this heading pertains to thesubstitute lamp as compared to the requested lamp. Example: where the word "more" appears in the "Light"column, the substitute lamp has higher light output than the requested lamp.

    Most of the suggested substitutes are directly interchangeable with the recommended lamp. However, GE cannot beresponsible if a substitute lamp is not satisfactory.Note particularly: (1) A higher-wattage substitute lamp may exceed the wattage rating of a particular fixture, withconsequent overheating. (2) There may be a difference in filament form between the requested and the substitutelamp. This could slightly alter the fixture efficiency or beam shape. (3) Quartzline substitutes for conventionalincandescent lamps are almost always smaller in overall size and will therefore readily fit in place of the incandescentlamp. However, the reverse is not true, so care should be used in replacing a requested quartz lamp with a (larger)incandescent substitute, since fixtures designed specifically for quartz lamps may not accommodate larger bulbs.
