This course will provide the students with fundamental knowledge of arithmetic from the perspective of concepts which are taught in the early primary mathematics. It will help the students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Arithmetic topics covered in the primary mathematics curriculum such as :basic mathematical logic; truth tables; historical numeration systems; Hindu-Arabic numeration system; place value system with other bases; divisibility; prime and composite numbers; greatest common divisor and least common multiple; representation and operations of integers, decimals and fractions; percentages; ratios and its real life applications, data analysis and probability; mental math methods; problem solving and mathematical reasoning techniques. Course Code: TC1MAT 245 Course Title: Teaching and Learning Math for Early Primary Teachers The participants in this course will gain an insight of the primary mathematics curriculum by analyzing the syllabus and textbooks used in its teaching and learning. Psychological theories relating specifically to the teaching and learning of primary mathematics will also be covered. They will learn to develop effective lesson plans by integrating teaching and learning theories and pedagogical and assessment principles for topics covered in the curriculum. Course Code: TC1MA 354 Course Title: Investigating Space and Shapes This course will provide the teacher candidate with spatial understanding, reasoning and measurement of one, two and three dimensional geometry. The course will help them develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of topics covered in the mathematics curriculum for elementary grades. Topics covered include introduction to geometry and geometric entities (point, lines, angles etc.); measurement in geometry; geometric figures in the 2-dimentional plane and the 3-dimentional space; motion geometry, reflection, symmetry and rotation; simple problem solving in geometry; use of dynamic geometry software for mathematical investigations; Metric Units of measurement: length, area, mass capacity and measurement of time and money. Course Code: TC1MAT 365 Course Title: Teaching and Assessing Math Learning for Early primary Teachers This course focuses on the various types of assessment tools used to gauge student learning at the primary level. Principles of test construction and analysis of results are also covered. In the second part of the module, the topics numbers and fractions at grade 1 to 3 are covered. The principles and strategies for the effective planning and teaching of numbers and fractions at primary levels to young students are addressed.
