Purpose

• To validate the procedure for comparative weight loss per C57.12.32-2019 in accordance to Section 4.3.2 and Annex A

• ASTM B117 salt spray test panels having to be bare substrate material use for tank construction shall be compare to bare 409 stainless steel test panels with a percent weight loss no more than 2.5 percent for each test panel after being exposed to 1500 hours

• A ratio between percent weight loss with bare substrate and 409 stainless steel shall not be more than 5 to 1

Material Samples Being Tested

• Samples are 304L, 316L, 409L, Cu-Bearing Steels

• Samples have controls for each 304L, 316L, 409L, Cu-Bearing Steels

• Samples that are 304L, 316L, and 409L have a thickness of .25 inch

• Samples that are Cu-Bearing have a thickness of .312 and .50 inch

• Samples have some with weld bead per standard

• Samples have different combinations of painting methods

• Samples have 3” x 4” and 3” x 6” per two standards (12.32 & 12.31)

• Following Slides Only Show Interim Testing 1032hrs of Salt Spray• 316L was not tested at this time due to space in salt spray chamber• ANSI 70 gray was not tested at this time due to space in salt spray chamber• Cu-Bearing .50 inch was not tested at this time due to space in salt spray chamber• Materials with Weld Bead was not tested at this time due to space in salt spray chamber

place when the salt

solution is being

absorbed within the

material and/or paint;

just didn’t come out

with the cleaning step

per standard hence

suggest that wording

should be percent

weight change, not

percent lost.

within the material and/or

paint; just didn’t come out

with the cleaning step per

standard hence percent

weight loss ‘0’… Suggest to

still show change in weight

and not put ‘0’?
