Introduction

Welcome to the GCSE Art & Design exemplar materials, we are providing a range of exemplars and commentaries that we hope will be useful in helping you to develop your own teaching and assessment practice. We have included exemplars from a high achieving candidate, a mid-range candidate and a low achieving candidate so that all teachers can gain a better grasp of the standard required. All the work used here is real candidate work and we hope you’ll find it interesting to be able to see a variety of work from different schools which will give you ideas that can help you develop your own course. This set of materials will focus on the GCSE Art & Design Graphic Communication and will contain example work from the Personal Portfolio unit. The work shows the creative journey of development and experimentation all the way through to final outcome. Alongside this will be comments from the Chief Examiner explaining the value of each item included and how this contributed to the marks awarded. We hope that you find this a useful resource in approaching your assessment and delivery of GCSE Art & Design.

Unit 1 – Personal Portfolio

43 Marks Theme: Work Rest Play In the first part of the Work Rest Play project (built on a previous Externally Set Assignment theme) the candidate considers a range of possible directions for a creative journey in graphic communication.

The candidate elects to develop outcomes for a poster, a cd and a mouse mat. The work of fine artists and graphic designers is considered and provides evidence for assessment objective 1 that reveals relevant critical understanding. Contextual exploration includes a gallery visit to the Tate Modern.

Summary Promising ideas are considered and, to some degree, inventive development promotes the further improvement of skills. Personal, refined judgment conveys growing understanding and commendable attempts to offer appropriate responses. The work shows appropriate, selection and experimentation and takes into account how creative processes may be used. Chances to try-out possibilities are taken up. There is evidence of competent endeavour to review, refine and modify. Graphic communication work shown here is underpinned by relevant selection and the recording of sufficient information from sources. The work offered is technically sound and appropriately realised. Outcomes show credible connections with the work of others and entail appreciation of some interesting visual aspects of artefacts.
